@mikey,
i love ur passion ofr ur team, but am ho hum with ur levl of objectivity, LMAO, :oP all good though, each to their own, but given the sharks have delivered on the spXV stage as much as my hurricanes, despite both having solid teams today and in the past, maybe i need some passion for my team lessosn from u, cos ive been bit by the realist bug, :o/
i rate the sharks too TBH, and while those youngsters plus the seasoned veterans of the sharks team make them on paper one of the best, its the mental edge which i think they lack and the youngsters wont add to that for a few years to come.
ive been watching out for jordaan since u mentioned him last year and im impressed with what ive seen so far, but his real test begins this year, as im expecting him to get more regular game time in 2013.
i love coetzee, fast becoming my favourite saffa player, but i still think he would make a better blinside than openside flankler.
meyer screwed up big time playing him off the bench, cos that was a waste, especially considering alberts wasnt much to speak of during the latter Bok tests. alberts would have made a better impact player, while coetzees workrate would have kept the Boks ticking along consistently.
i like du toit, he should do very well in spXV, but im not sold on him yet, will keep a very close eye on him though.
but to the best of my guesstimation, i would have to say the sarks are a tier 2 team when it comes to chances for winning the spXV.
tier 1 teams,,,
crusaders - the most succesful team in the history of the comp, no team comes close to having what it takes to make the finals like the crusdaers, i mean the last time the crusaders didnt make any the first round of finals was 2001, thats an 11 year streak and the culture ingrained into the squad as a result of it will see them easily make the finals, but its the qaulity of the squad and the desperation of a trophieless blackadder which makes them serious spXV winners.
experience is the key which will see them again be a force to reckoned with.
stormers - great squad, depth all round which should help lighten the work load. playing against the kings twice gives coetzee a good chance to rest key players while stecthing the legs of the fringe storm players.
best defense in the comp and thats not going to change in 2013, but they do have the worst attack, which their lions acquisition will help improve.
they were unlucky to lose the sharks in the semis, cos while they deserved to lose it ecpecially with JDV making retarded captain decisions, something that bergers return will sort out. the reality is thier defence will 9 times out of 10 get them over the line and i believe they could have done that last year against any team except the chiefs IMO.
chiefs- the current champs have lost 2012 spXV best player in SBW, but SBW has left a huge parting gift, anyone who understimates the chiefs as a result of SBWless team is going to be in for a rude awkening.
dave rennie and wayne smith have been bigger contributors to the chiefs cause, luring away 2012 spXV best flyhalf aaron cruden from my hurricanes,as well as a whole host of other youngsters from around the country like robbie robinson from down my neck of the woods invercargill.
with names like t nani-williams, cruden, t kerr barlow, b taumafuina, b afeaki, b retallick, c clarke, b leonard, a pulu, r kahui, l masaga, r robinson and all under the guidance of rennie and smith, if i was a chiefs fan i would be very confident of another successful season.
reds - provided the reds are injury or near injury free, they will be a force to be reckoned with like in 2011. they are probably the weaker of the other teams, but when fully fit and playing at home, its very similar to the bulls during their golden era in loftus, they have made suncorp a real aussie house of pain.
its the conference they play in which will aid them big time in 2013, they should win their aussie darbies both home and away quite easily and this will give them an advantage of racking up points to securing a home final.
tier 2
sharks - i like the sharks team, very balanced with class of all levels and ages in most positions. despite all that, i still have huge reservations about them winning the comp, i do expect them to making the first round of the finals, but i havent seen anything from them which tells me they have the mental capcity to handle that pressure. they did well in 2012, but havent beaten NZs top two teams the chiefs and crusaders in the last two years and i dont see that changing this year either.
hurricanes - very similar to the sharks, very balanced with class of all levels and ages in most positions. unlike the sharks, hurricanes have the NZ conference to contend with and thats going to hurt their chances for a finals appearance.
should they make the finals, i would expect one of the other teams to eventually topple them, especially as the automatic leaders of every confernce will secure top three spots and with it a home final, a BS rule which SARU insisted on having.
