I am starting this thread based on a post by KingC orn. I think it is worth debating because a solid core for a team is more important to the future success of that team than just about any other factor.
My 5 core players would be

1) Marx2) Etzebeth3) Jaco Kriel (But without Whitely. A lightwieght highly mobile loosie, needs to be balanced by a couple of heavy weight loosies) 4) Rohan5) Bosch (I know this one is out of left field, but although he is lightweight, I see some genuine talent in this kid. Also some BMT) Pollard is just not the player he used to be. Probably just a coaching issue, but an issue none the less. I still think he has the talent, but it is about time we saw it.

Bluebok - not sure about some players - but think mine will be -
*   Marx'*   Etzebeth*   Du Toit'*   Kriel*   Vorster
I like Rohan - but Vorster is a better all-round player.   He proved that last year - but had injury problems opening the way for Janse  van Rensburg to come through.

Marx, Etzebeth, Du Toit, Rohan and I agree with Moz, Senatla could be a gem.

With our counter attacking game we need one player who has real gas. A classic case was when Kolbe was put away against the Chiefs against Cruden and didn't trust his pace. Those chances have to be put away.

According to the clever people if we have a solid core at 2, 8, 9, 10, 15 we're set for great things.

Sady the only one worthy of that line-up is Marx at 2.

Randomly I would select Marx, Etzebeth, Kriel, Rohan and Vorster ...

Basson also has a lot of gas ... it doesn't make him any more special than Skosan or Sergeal Petersen.

There's more to a special player than just raw pace. Habana is a fine example of what I regard as something special on the wing.

Senatla is one of many options. He doesn't stand out above the rest as would warrant a core selection.

The top try scorer and concensus most dangerous player in Sevens before he came back doesn't stand out? Sergeal Peterson is a mess defensively and Skosan has yet to really make a statement. Basson was gobbled up by Savea.

I for one do not think that any of the following five players are Springbok quality but who am I to question the great rugby minds who have the final say.
So here goes the five that I think are going to be the core of the Springbok squad.

Malcolm Marx, Pieter-Steph du Toit, Jean-Luc du Preez, Rohan Janse van Rensburg, Curwin Bosch.
I'm tempted to add 2 or 3 more . . . Jaco Kriel, Skuna Notshe, Lukhanyo Am and Madosh Tambwe are the names that come to mind . . . but I'll stick with 5.

Senatla is a Sevens specialist. He is by no means on the same level of play within the 15 man game.

He has a lot of pace ... of that there is no doubt ... but ... it's the only talent he has. He doesn't have to be as creative with his running lines. With so few players on the field opposing him and the ample space available, it's tailor made for him.

Not sure if you've noticed but the 15 man game is a very different prospect.

He doesn't warrant a core selection.

Well I wouldn't just give him a core selection without him earning it, but this is hypothetical and hypothetically I think he's going to to mature into a star in  the 15's game

Thanks bluebook for starting this thread.
Out of the five players you picked, which 2 will be your captain and vice captain?
If you look it at from a different view point like cricket. Faf duplesis wasn't a guy to set the world alight but he has is a consistent high performer but not spectacular but he leads the team well and does his bit to push the team through.
I think if you get your core right, then players such as Bosch, Kolbe and Senatla will shine.
Habana is case in point where he could turn a game on his head but good old Percy just did the basics to make sure Habana and JP could get decent tries.
Whitely has proven over the weekend what a good leader he has been and has still some years ahead of him. Not spectacular but solid and co nsistent.

I have my doubts about Senatla as well.   Very few Sevens players make it good in the 15 man game.   I first want to see him having an extended run in 15 man rugby before making an assessment on him.
Because he has pace does not mean that he would have the same opportunities in 15 man rugby as he gets in Sevens.
The other problem is that I do not like picking players on reputation and he has nothing but Sevens reputation and nothing proven in 15 msn rugby.

The point of Plum's suggestion was to stop exactly that kind of posting Tokkie .....a maniacal focus on the one novel suggestion in my list. You can't stop yourself so when I post first on a string.....leave that string alone. I'll gladly leave any string you have polluted alone.

Time to set up a meeting between CM and mozart me thinks.
Either ignore each posting the other party logs or don't comment on one another's postings.
Basic and simple.
Now please comply.

I am not optimistic at all - fact is I am enraged by the retention of the clueless Coetzee as coach.   With him as coach there is no way the team that is produced can function and then there are also the so-called quota requirement - where players are selected on the basis pf race - not competency.
Let me be explicit - I do not mind the inclusion of any player - provided he is the best player in the position he holds in the team.   What gets the team as a whole demoralized is when the selection is purely based on race without regard to competence.
Fact is that Coetzee lost the dressing room - end of story.

Having your captain as part of the core is a given. Thing is though, the core of your team ought to be the best of the best in the country. An experienced captain would be a plus but as far as I'm concerned his primary role would be as a player leading by example and not captaincy alone.

In other words ... no John Smit types.

With the list I've put up I'd have to go for Kriel as my captain.

My Vice Kapitan is still to be decided upon.

Good point cleancut, I like Kriel and he has done his bierover the years. Just hope he stays injuy free. I'm not optimistic about this season or even the next 3 years. We need to sort our head coach and then ensure super rugby coaches followed by a really great 4 teams that would refuse to give points away at home. No more easy points like we saw on Saturday where the cheetahs blew a 24 point lead. Kolisi and Noche came well short on Saturday and have proven that they are not up to international quality.

Finding a core of players is a senseless exercise when clearly all we have is a group of average players across all franchises. I would stick with the players who perform consistently well at S15 level and instead of hoping for the best, coach them the set pieces and backline play. If anything we need players who perform well....consistently.

Hmmm ... weren't you the one who wanted Willie Le Roux as our Bok 10?

Perhaps you should rather stick to a subject you know something about.

Yes I did.....and you may have noticed that when he joined the backline he was by the country mile our most creative player, as an experiment in my opinion it was worth a shot.
Actually when you think about it, it's a better option than your choice of Bosman...dontcha think!?

Ummmm . . . Dense, note that Klown didn't promote Bosman, he promoted Boshoff. The only person ignorant and stupid enough to punt the donkey Meyer Bosman was the self-important old fossil whose arse you kiss at every opportunity.

Klown, we'd better give poor Dense a break. He's in enough trouble as it is. He's probably soiling his panties at the thought of apologizing to his Master for ridiculing Moffie's great flyhalf pick.
I love t he comedy provided by rugby noobs like Dense and Moffie trying to make their mark on a forum specializing in a subject they know nothing about.

Yeah I guess.

If he spent less time pasting his combover down and more watching rugby he may have learnt something in all the years he's been on this board.

Still can't figure out why he's on this board?

Do you remember the time when he spent hours trying to provoke you to post ... saying things like ... "I know you are there, you coward" ... all the while your out with your wife at a restuarant oblivious to his tantrums.

That was friggin funny.

Funny how certain things stay with one ... and others don't.
