Yes I know Maakniks.....he's the player Carbuncle told us should be the Bok flyhalf, the coaches were stupid not to pick him.....who was so nervous in the CC final he couldn't kick a sitter.
.
Yep that who Maakniks was. Similar to that great Urinal pick....Verloorius.

Whoever is selected to lead the Springboks must at least be a starter for a game.
Now I know most Vaal's think the captain must come from the Lions squad and I do not have an issue with that as long as he is a sure thing to be selected as a regular merit selected starter.
Kriel is not that guy.
What about the "Beast" he has all the requirements to meet the current requirements for regular election.

Our rugby has really imploded if we can't name one player who is a certainty for the Boks team.....but that's not far from the truth. That's why keeping our great 2007 team together for a run at the 2015 WC made sense. HMs mistake was to rely on guys like Lomp and Kriel, newbies who were way not ready. Now we have the new team of spoiled, hyped players and as you said on another string, not even one would make the British Lions.

I honestly think that the Beast is top of the list and here are my reasons:
Experience.Sure starter.Respected both on and off the field.Popular on all continents.Inspiring.Crowd pleaser.Fits into the SARU directive.
Who else could fit the role and be certain of selection?

Terrific player and a great team man, he might be the best choice for this year. If Pollard fully recovers from his horrible medical experience and settles the contest for 10, he could be a future choice. I see few other players who are certain of their places.
19 Apr 2017, 21:35#47
I thought Beast was going to be the captain last year - for the reasons you suggested AJ. Has to be the front runner.
Core players:
1. Beast2. Etzebeth3. Kitshoff (2nd loosehead, but too good not to include)4. RJVR5. Pollard (he's slowly coming around).
Like the Wilco, Senatla, calls and more game time will bring more clarity. Marx also a good call
Bosch needs to be nurtured - not thrown right into the mix.
Kriel is probably the best we have at loosie, but not convinced he'll thrive at Test rugby where the space is limited.
Du Toit is no flank, and prefer Snyman at this stage for #5 at test level

Our loose forwards are poor. We don't have players who have a mix of size, speed and skills since Vermeulen lost form.
We have no one that is in the top 5 loosies in the world.

SB
Our loosies have been poor for years. After just another debacle of Alberts I wrote as far back as 2013 that the idea of having two slow and heavy players as loosies effectively establish a Tight 8 is out.
At the time I wrote that one can be satisfied with one slow loosie and in that case I mentioned Vermeulen as the slow loosie - but felt that two new loosies should be identified and developed as a key component of a new loosie combination. My hope was that Vermeulen would be the key - but after his serious neck injury and move to Toulon he has gone on the slow boat to China. In games of Toulon I watched Vermeulen was notorious for never been mentioned - he just vanish from active performance.
The other problem is that the blind side flank has for years now misidentified and used. That resulted in the replacement of Juan Smith - a strong but more speedy loosie who could handle balls as well by Alberts - the slowest and most non-plussed loosie ever. Meyer thought that the playing style of the Bulls - using heavy and slow loosies and using them as first receivers far too frequently would work in the era he was coach and it frankly resulted in the present situation.
I think we must start from scratch now with identification of a loosie combination after years of amazing neglect of that component of the game under Meyer and even De Villiers. During the Meyer era there were three promising loosies emerging - namely Arno Botha - who has been on the constant injury list since then and Van der Walt and Labuschagne. The latter had ball sense and was an excellent defender and a ball protection and recovery specialist - but Meyer pertinently ignored his potential.
Last year Labuschagne did excellently for the Bulls amd even captained them in some matches. However, he is gone to Japan and is not more eligible.
There is at this stage only one real loosie candidate - Jaco Kriel. That guy from the Kings - Cloete - whom the Stormers discarded looks promising as well. There are some youngsters coming through - but most of them are physical players without the required pace ingredient. One of them could fill the no 8 position - but for the rest we have to find a usable 7.

What?
Beast??
Bok captain?
Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahahahahahahaaaaaa!!!
He's not the best in his position to begin with. Not by a long shot. Probably as low down as 6th or 7th on the pecking order. How does that qualify him as a core player?
What he is is a burnt out hasbeen who was selected because of his race to begin with ... who suffers with heart palpitations and has to medicate himself daily because of it.
I always found his name hilarious. It doesn't suit him. It's like calling a Chihuahua "Butch" or "Killer"
Redelinghuyse as well as Dreir cleaned him up at every encounter.
Of course Faggot would support this absurdity ... Beast turns 32 in August ... an elderly, long in the tooth, way past his prime pensioner.
Come 2019 ... we'll have yet another Matfield hampering the team ... keeping younger, stronger, better props out of the game when we could have had a young talent sporting 40 test caps.
As for leadership qualities ... he pouts and sulks when the ref goes against him. He becomes emotional and allows it to upset his already sub standard play. He takes everything personally and the entire team is influenced by his moodiness.
Our captain should be an adult ... not prone to emotional outbursts ... or pouting and sulking.
NO ... Beast is definitely not the man for the job. He should be retired ... not on the rugby field ... not even for the Sharks ... and most definitely not for the Boks.
Unless of course you want another quota selection to appease the authorities ... then by all means pick Beast. Don't come crying when our losing streak continues for yet another term.
Wow ... how stupid can you be?
20 Apr 2017, 08:50#53
How about talent, Arthur?
I always thought that to be an important factor when considering selections.
Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!
For one so anti South Africa and it's racist policies you sure buckle under pressure easily.

Fool, even Bosman would be a better choice than your Boshoff.
It's high time you drop your bluster, this is not a dog pound and neither is it a barking competition, it's a rugby forum so don't blame me if you feel out of place.

CC never been anti-SA ever.
Sure I complain about discrimination and forcing players into teams when they are selected on race and not merit.
If that offends u I am sorry.
I do not think that being vocal on this forum about such issues are anti South African in any way.
Want is wrong with wishing to see the best, not the rest run on the field in Green and Gold.
Politics and sport have never combined successfully.
I would without hesitation support any SA team selected on merit irrespective of race.
Also regarding talent and the Beast, I would have thought that with his record in rugby that TALENT was a given!
Cheers.
20 Apr 2017, 16:19#59
Arthur ... of course ... every one would love to see merit selections take place.
I too hate race based selection. That in itself is what I find offensive.
Beast is old and by a long shot not a merit selection. He's been destroyed at SR level the last few seasons and selecting him as our premier loosehead is what Coetzee would do ... oh and Mozart.
Dylan Smith, Marais, Kitshoff and Thomas Du Toit are all vastly superior to the "Beast" ... and those are just a few off the top of my head.
As for the captaincy ... the less said about this elderly hasbeen the better.
Don't go all "politically correct" on me. Speak your mind as you've always done. I've grown accustomed to it and quite enjoy your frankness.

Kitshoff and Thomas du Toit aren't in the Beasts's league, even today.
21 Apr 2017, 08:01#62
No, they're streets ahead in every way.
Beast is a quota pick. He always has been.
He is one of the main reasons why the Bok scrum has been dominated the last decade or so.
Rather have the elderly Os at 1 than this man with his heart disorder.

My 5 youngish players who represented the Boks already.
1. Etzebet 2. PSDT3. Kitshoff ...Beast to start still.4. Pollard...maybe, there might be some other contenders.5. RJVR.
Not the Ideal core.
I think Cloete from the Kings are a real prospect and I like what I've seen from Cronje. We need to decide on the front row and another 2 locks. 7&8 is up for grabs. 9 should go to Vermaak ATM, with Venter to watch.
10? Pollard/Du Preez/ Cronje...I'll like it if Kleintjie Carel breaks through.
11. ???12 RJvR/ DdA/ DdP13 Jan/ EW?14 ??15 Bosch/ SP as impact.
I liked Oupa at 7 this year, Du Preez twins should work on their hand skills. Notshe? Kolby, VW and Rule looked good on wing.
Biggest problem is that we have no current boks doing well in their positions.
22 Apr 2017, 08:02#64
Yes ... you are right ... not the ideal core.
In fact, not much of a core at all.
I suppose Beast is your captain too?

"Du Preez twins should work on their hand skills."
What?
Are you basing this on the 2016 or 2017 season?
Daniel hasn't had too much game time this year so I can't really speak for him but some of the hand skills Jean-Luc has shown this season have been absolutely phenomenal!
And yet hands-of-concrete Etzebeth is the first name on your list! Spot the bias!

Rooi, I agree that JLdP has been much better this year, but he's dropped a few more than average...and yes, I agree that I'm bias when it comes to my WP, but I do try spitting talent from other teams. I think the Dup twins are great prospects and that poir hands lets them down a bit, I'm not saying the should be discarded because of it. I also think a Bok team with all 3 brothers, 2 Du Plessis cousins and even 2 Du Toit brothers isn't that far fetched.

My perception clouded a bit by history. I think it was only in the Lions match, in the other matches I've seen there was no problem. I'm not slating him, just an observation.
