A penchant for the glory boys.....the sickness that consumes our rugby.

You read it all the time....did you see that new youngster, he is a certain Bok. Usually this conclusion is reached based on CC or lesser play. And so we have a long list of inevitables: ....... Gaffie, JJ Englebrecht, Jessie Kriel, Goosen, Hougaardt, Taute, Lambie, Wynand Olivier, Faf de Klerk, Schalk Brits, Coenie, Lomp, Stephanie, Luke Watson, Pierre Spies, Warren Whitely, Kleintjie Kriel. ......... And what has that list accomplished in international rugby? Nothing? Well maybe the odd good moment but nothing that remotely made them automatic choices. They are a list of failures at international level, although to be fair some still have a chance to rectify that. But I'm not holding my breath. Players who start badly at test level rarely come right. And no, it's not the coaching BOD was always brilliant in some dreadful Irish teams. Each player can win their individual battle. ..... Jake White stopped the newbie of the week practice he inheriited from Destroyli. He recognized there had to be a Bok team and newbies had to perform to dislodge inc.umbents. It worked, he handed over a real team to Snor that had just won the WC and was still ranked number 2 8 years later. ..... The Poms, Scots and Irish have brought tested new players into a stable team and they have settled. We look more like France with a completely new solution every year. ..... And so many of these flavour of the day players never had a prayer..... Lambie, Faf, Jantjies, Goosen, Brits, Kleintjie Kriel.....Whiteley, all too small. They would be blown away in the type of tests NZ played against Ireland. Others like Taute and Wynand too slow.....Lomp not explosive enough, Coenie unable to really scrum. All these knockout factors are obvious, but it takes us 10 tests minimum to figure it out. ...... So after a horrible year the same glory boys who failed us last year are suddenly going to fix the problem. Don't hold your breath.

 The sickness is in your brain - the picking of some players and your obvious dislike of them is what is wrong here.   Get a life and stop your prejudice.
I would say that you never ever had a realistic assessment of player performances - it is clearly BS.   That list should not be based on prejudice - but real performance assessment.  
However, the surest sign of BS is when you start giving players nicknames and the real BS is some of your own heroes.

 We have heard so many times about the same players from you - and it definitely is tiresome and boring - as I said get a life and start writing about what is positive.
     

Well let's see those 17 players played well over 300 tests.....the equivalent of a team playing around 20 tests. Who did anything to help the Bok cause? Huh?

Well I can tell you that Moffie is 70 years old and it's perfectly normal for all his threads to descend into pitifully childish squabbles. That's how he rolls. 70 going on 7.

I am not here to make enemies or anything, but all of you, please go back and read this thread from the top from the viewpoint of a newbie like myself, and tell me what you think. Now that I have that monkey off my back I can saunter onward to my point. Mozart does make a lot of sense with his initial comment. South Africans do tend to get a boner for a player after a couple of good performances. Without taking into account the level of opposition, tournament quality and a whole heap of other important factors. As a result of all the hype, these players get fast tracked to the top when they are not ready, where they promptly fail. 
In other words, some players on Mozart's list could probably have amounted to a lot more, and some still might, but for the most part, that is a list of hyped up failures. 
Pieter Steph Du Toit for me is a strict exception, I do rate him!   

The point that Moffie misses is the fact that the most hyped up player since Bob Skinstad is his precious Eben Etzebeth who should be the first name on any list of overrated players who have failed to live up to all the hype around them.

Exactly right...Currie Cup is no yardstick to the potential of a player's ability and the probable reason for the boner is because it's not all that hard to notice one or two good things when the rest of the players are ordinary. Over the years too many have fallen by the wayside having achieved Bok level. Not sure what the answer is. Just my five cents.

I for years went to rugby in a corporate box of Tongaat-Hulett - actually gave up my Kingspark because of that situation.   So you are talking shyte as per normal. 

 It took NZ generations to change from their stodgy mid 60s to early 70s style to where it is now ,and we had to suffer major heartache in 2003 -2007 along the way.Gotta have a workable plan that suits the materiale' to hand and stick with it if you can see desirable change coming.A plan "B" wouldnt hurt either .Cant make generational changes in one season.

 A good start is to know how to score tries. For too long South African rugby brought about it's own demise by relying solely on physicality and a kicking game. That was fine until other countries invested in prime beef and an attacking game.

It also depends on mediocrity being acceptable and it is as long as the colour projections meet with it's targets.

 I dunno Denny ,maybe you need to make some lemonade with what  you have been handed.The black population must be a huge untapped source of players.If the government in SA gave a sh!t about rugby then pumping money into black rugby instead of that  bafana nonsense would be a good start ,kill two birds with one stone.

 As a local government employee for years you went to Sharks rugby in the box of Tongaat-Hulett??? In almost every other country that would be deemed highly inappropriate. Maybe one game would be fine....but for years you used the box of a company that had an interest in local affairs? And you were involved in local development. Ag nee man!
