What an innings by ABD, an absolute pleasure watching the man bat. Up there with most naturally gifted cricketers ever.Special mentions to Amla and Roussow too on a couple of outstanding knocks too.

The Proteas could have bate the world record for the highest score ever in ODI's - they were just 5 runs short.
The fact that they improved their batting record in ODI's reminded me of the previous game where they scored 438 runs against the Aussies,    In that game Gibbs scored 175 runs facing 115 balls.   Today AB showed us how much superior a batsman he really is - scoring 149 runs off 44 balls.
He broke the world record for -
*    the fastest 50 ever scored in ODI's  from 16 balls;*    the fastest 100 ever scored in ODI's from 31 balls.
One more run and h would have broken the 150 run scored record too.
The groundwork for AB was laid by Rossouw and Amla - with just over 11 overs remaining - at that stage Rossouw was out after scoring 128 runs from 114 balls and Amla was at 115 runs off 114 balls.   AB was in an excellent position to score massively and he did.   Beyond a doubt a cricketing genius and the best batsman in the world at present.

I agree...what a player but even more what a human spirit...what a really gifted human being. Amla too ....Has and AB make a plan... you too can bring the cup to deserving Saffas and let poor Alan Donald present it in the memory of very dear Hansie.

Anyway if any of you guys read this...extremely well done oaks...too proud of you ...be ing part of this nation.

Cricket as with rugby.... 99% of the time, both sports exude humility on and off the pitch.

It was lovely to see Chris Gayle bow to AB when he marched off, almost as it to say "it can't get any better than that".

When AB reached his hundred, he almost looked shy!

I love this era of Protea team. They some stars littered amongst other very good players and they remain humble. They deserve their success.

AB is an awesome talent, cant recall seeing such a gifted bat......his free spirit adds to the attraction....had he been a rugby player, he would have been a Willie.
As free spirited and explosive as AB is, we have the equally impressive, more measured class act in Amla.......these two are just so lethal together.......could they be more consistent or domineering.......we are blessed with two of the finest the game has seen......and in Steyn another.
Great to see Rossouw playing his coming of age innings and also Miller doing the same in the first game.
It will be a travesty of justice if Berhardien plays ahead of Rossouw in the WC starting side when de Kock returns.
The side has to be:
1. Amla 2. de Kock 3. Faf 4. AB 5. Miller 6. JP 7. Rossouw 8. Philander 9. Steyn 10. Morkel 11. Tahir.....easy side to pick

Problem is - who is going to be the fifth bowler?   That role was shared between Duminy and Behardien today and it was not really a success.   Besides that Behardien's batting was problematic in the ODI's played thus far - as well as in the T20's   Bad news - that one.    Maybe they should use - Duminy, AB and Faf to do the 5th bowler's function and forget about Behardien.

AB is almost too good for his own press. The guy goes in there regardless of circumstances and never looks like he is in trouble. Compared to him prior SA greats like Pollock or the charismatic Roy McLean look like hit or miss artists.
So frequently this great bat seems less interesting to the media than players who struggle to produce results. But his 149 against India was so stupendous it will be the talk leading up to the WC. Some of those offside sixes were hard to believe.

Fortunately with Quentin back in the side Behardien gets the ch op, I don't see how they're going to accommodate him, JP will be the fifth bowler or share the 5th bowlers role.

I think the top line-up should be as follows:-
1    Amla2    De Kock3    Du Plessis4    De Villiers5    Rossouw6    Miller7    Duminy8    Philander9    Steyn10  Morkel11  Tahir
Against weaker teams they can play around a bit by resting some key players.

Mike every ODI side has one bowler who is not a specialist and more of a part timer......the only chance of having 5 specialist bowlers in your side is if you have the luxuary of a Kallis in your side.

JP does a good enough job most of the time and we will just have to live with one part timer as all sides do.

Denny sadly it looks like the return of de Kock will mean that Rossouw will lose out as they seem hell bent on retaining useless Berhardien just because he can bowl those useless pie chuckers.

They should entrust JP with the job of the 5th bowler with Faf and AB as back-ups if the wheels come off on the day.

The non selection of v/Zyl makes even less sense given the fact that his bowling is of the same calibre of Berhardien and he is twice the bat......makes no sense at all.

If Behardien was of any use as a batsman - then maybe he could have been included - but he is not - and that is the end of the story.   He is not an all-rounder at all - so why is he in the squad?   I agree with you about Van Zyl as well.

High praise from Bob Willis who thinks AB is the all-time best after saying for the last 30 years that Viv was the best.

That's a huge call.

Personally I believe AB must frank his greatness by having a great WC against the Ozzie attack.

Berhardien is just useless in every respect.....I cant begin to comprehend how on earth he has played a single international match.

v/Zyl should have been selected ahead of him. Twice the bat, younger and as average a bowler.

Hell Wiese would have been a better bat.

Denny - AB is the most gifted bat I have seen......his ability to play perfectly technical shots straight out of the textbook and then innovate to create the most unbelievable of shots, sets him apart.

No bowler seems to be able to trouble him really

I we cant win with JP as our 5th bowler then no side will win with their 5th bowler as no ODI side has the luxuary of playing 5 specialist bowlers

JP and Faf should be good enough for 10 overs together. Although I do feel that our main weakness is that fifth bowling options
If you look at the Aussies for instances, there's bowling options all through their team.
But Steyn, Philander, Morkel is about as good as you get. Tahir is a very good limited overs bowler. So if they tighten up and do the business then there's no reason JP and Faf shouldn't be good enough.

I would like to see Wiese as the 5th bowler, but I think the squad for the WC has been announced and it is too late now to add or withdraw a player - unless an injury is the reason. Wiese is unfortunately not in the squad.

Yes Blikkies, Wiese would have been good. A good bat too. Guess we'll just have to make do with what we have now though.
Luckily we have a very good batting line-up, excellent fielders and one of the best pace attacks in the tournament.

We cannot have a poor bowler and poor batsman like Behardien on the pretext that he can bowl a few overs - when he goes for plenty runs.   If he was any good as a batsman there is justification to replace one of the batsman with him - but his batting is as bad as his bowling.
If we have to have an all-rounder in the team - I would say Wiese is a much better option and so is Van Zyl - but that cannot be changed now and we have to use Duminy, de Villiers and Faf or even Rossouw combined to bowl ten overs.  At least all four of the above are class batsmen.     If those four goes for 60 runs or even 70 runs - fine, there batting is good enough to off-set that.   Not that Behardien's bowling would go for less - that indeed is doubtful - and with him around like on Sat urday - someone else will have to do the off-setting.

JP is as good an off spinner as most of the specialist off spinners playing ODI's right now.
He has done well as a bowler both in ODI's and tests over the past 2 years.....sure he will travel at times, but then again all bowlers do. He is far better than a part time spinner.
Faf is not really an option as he is pretty kak as a bowler, but obviously an option if the wheels come off.

But dumb Beenkop tells us that if the side was merit selected, we would win......by my reckoning the ignorant fool probably sees Amla, Philander, JP and Tahir as quotas?

Saff, you are correct about the players that you have named, bar Tahir and that just goes to show how stuffed up the govt is. When Tahir eventually got approval to represent SA, it was made clear that his inclusion would not count towards any "transformation targets" because he is not the a "South African born previously disadvantaged". The same argument was applied for Beast in rugby.
Be that as it may. I think that the need for quotas in cricket is long gone and so is the argument that our teams are inferior because of quotas. All our players of colour are there on merit, without any doubt. Yes, there are questions about Behardien but, as you have said, there are also questions about white players.

Its so nice to see we are seeing on merit only in cricket. Pleeeease!! Bavuma was a great selection. The quotas in rugby etc.Just becuae mistakes may be made re whites doesnt mean there are no quota motivated selections snaspter!!!!Sorry oaks but we are a quota obsessed bunch. Same applies to the workplace.
