Simply because what we saw out there on Saturday wasn't a team. It was a collection of players based on nothing. There is no core to the team. The only way in this short time. To build a team is to base it to some extent on one of our franchises. We have often done this with the Bools....only the Lions fit the bill right now.

Secondly if we don't try these players now, when do we try them? Normally I'm for winning matches, but we don't want another 4 years with team controversies....throw them in the water, let's see who swims. Given our poor Super performance there will be more time for the team to gel before the RC if some of these changes have to be reversed.
Thirdly it will rev up Ellis Park and what better venue to debut for Lions players. Let's go for broke, if we lose the series....so what? We are in transition and experimenting. So play this team:
WillieCombrinkMapoeJanse van RensburgMvovoJantjiesFafRedlinghuisMarxBeastEtzebethStephanieKrielLouwWhiteley
And if it all flops we can put our best shot for the RC in for next week, but at least the air will have been cleared. And there is just a chance this may work.

That's a little over the top but seeing as we're going the Lions route, why not Dylan Smith in place of Beast ... he is after all the better loosehead prop of the two.
I would also be tempted to include Cyle Brink in place of Louw on the blindside ... as well as find a suitable replacement for the over rated Willie.
Someone like Gelant.

It looks radical but who am I leaving out:

JP ...who is no longer fast enough to be a threat
The never did a thing ...Allende
Malherbe ....who is better at giving away penalties than scrumming
Strauss....who seems like a vacuum of leadership
Lomp ....who seems easier to strip than a hooker in the red light district
Kolisi....who can't impact the breakdown
And the great Thor who seems to be having an identity crisis.
I might be tempted to water it down and keep Thor, but if you keep him Strauss probably has to stay to captain the team. Honestly this is not the end of the world, call it an experiment and go for broke.

Well Mozart, now that you put it that way, I can't really find much fault with your selection.
It would definitely be interesting to witness that mix against the Irish.
We could even walk away winners. Wouldn't that be a pleasant experience for a change.  Haaaaahahahahahaaaa ... no I don't think so, Dave.
Much prefer Mozart's team to that list of losers.
Firstly you don't want the penalty machine Malherbe any where near the side. You'll be spending a vast amount of time behind the posts waiting for the opponents next shot. He's to be avoided at all cost.
Really ... ??? Jacques Du Plessis?? Come now, Dave ... we're looking toward a winning combination. We have much better available ... Brink for one is far more mobile, has a higher work rate and is one for the future. Du Plessis is just another dumb muscle we can do without.
A little intelligence can't harm.
Notshe is not an 8.
As for the plodding Serfontein, the weedy Lood, the talentless Fransie Steyn, the quota Kolisi, the feeble Marcel and that complete idiot Jesse Kriel with Mapoe on the wing  ... well what can one say other than NO, NO, NO ...
Why do you struggle so, Dave?
Mozart threw a random team together ... probably took him all of a minute and it's vastly superior to yours.
Actually now that I think about it, most teams listed here would put yours to the sword.
Well a big plus is that Coenie and HouGat's nowhere to be seen.
A little progress is better than none at all ...

Den if you compare Jake, PdV and HM....the only coach who wasn't under constant pressure to select a different team was PdV. In large part because he started with flavour of the day players like Watson, Grant, Chavanga, Moojati, Januarie etc. When that didn't work out the country was happy to go back to Schalk, F du Preez, JP etc.
If Coetzee wishes to avoid constant selection turmoil, he may want to go the same route. Besides which some of these players may actually succeed...and  the guys we played last week eg in the centres and wings were not very inspiring.
Take your risks early.

There is no way the Lions team would have lost to the Irish. Quesrion for me is, how long ng do these Boks have to play together before they would be better than the Lions? Answer, it'll probably never happen. The Irish were rubbish on Saturday, but the Boks out rubbish them. So I agree with Moz's idea. Take your most in-form team and build a Bok squad around those players. Coetzee has a brief window of opportunity to get a team together and get it performing. A new team and a new game plan is not going to work to work in the short term and I have serious reservations about the long term too. Had he half a brain he'd have capitalised on the Lions momentum and then used the available high quality players to plug gaps and build on that momentum. An eg of this breaking of momentum was his starting with Lambie. A guy who has played so little rugby this year. Not to mention breaking up the best 9 10 combo we've had for ages. A try scoring/creating combo. He puts Mvovo on the wing and uses centre's who are blatant reputation picks and then has the gal to say "We never converted territorial advantage into points." What did he think would happen? His starting the out of form Duane over the massively in form Whiteley? Why was Combrink not starting? Is there a more in form player in that position anywhere in the country? Actually, how many form players did he start with on Saturday? Maybe 3 or 4 at most? I hope he intends on starting the form players this week and that right now they are busy running the Lions set piece and open play drills because I think that is the only way they will win on Saturday. Kriel needs to replace Wille and Combrink needs to come in for JP. Redlinghuys needs to start also. Currently and on form, one would have to go with PSDT, Mostert and RG Snyman. I'd bring Eben on at 50-60 mins as an impact player and see if can generate some hunger from him in that way. Lastly, I know everybody on this board loves Eben to bits but i can't remember the last time he put in the kind of performance Mostert puts in every single week at the Lions. Yes, lineout ball is important but where was Eben on Saturday? The one time noticed him was when he Clark Kented over the ruck giving away a penalty. He has the speed and the power to put in colossal performances at least every other game and yet hardly ever does. Why? And why is Mostert able to? My conclusion is that he probably does try just as hard as Mostert but he just doesn't have the rugby brain/game reading that the Lions lock does. It seems were are mislead slightly by Eben's physical appearance and one or two big tackles in a game pretty much secures him in our individual starting teams. I have doubts. If Morne Steyn starts in Saturday I will put my fist through the television.

Mitchell tried it and it didn't work. He picked mostly Crusader players as they were the dominant NZ team at the time.
IMO Coetzee needs to review the available talent, take into account what his long-term plan is for style of play, pick players that can execute and then build the Boks performance. The problem is he will have to get at least some success or else things will really get bad. Already England have overtaken the Boks in the world rankings.
In the game against Ireland there were some positive (not the scoreboard though). Boks did very well on attacking stats but the critical stat was the turnovers conceded. They coughed up the ball and often when they were close to scoring. They also ran across the field so back simply ran out of bounds or were pushed out of bounds. They will do better in the test this weekend. We will see if it is enough to win.

I'm not disagreeing for the sake of disagreeing but i do disagree
Just because it didn't work once before does not mean that it will not work at all. Coetzee's only viable long term plan is to move towards attacking rugby. Anything else at this point does not make sense. Here's why...
The Lions are beating all the SA teams in Super Rugby by playing attacking and counter attacking rugby. This means that for the moment, and for the foreseeable it is where our strength is. It also proves that the idea of SA not having the skill to play that kind of rugby is a myth born our of the coaches excuse book. It's only logical that we play to our strengths and not to our history.
Yes the breakdown was a big problem. It really was. Again, because of out of form players. Starting with Kriel, Whitely and Mostert would have changed this stat drastically. We would have gotten quicker ball and the back line would not have drifted as badly as it did.
I maintain that Eben does not get to nearly enough rucks early enough, neither do Beast and Malherbe. Watch some Lions replays and see how fast and efficiently Mostert, Redlinghuys and Kriel get there. Out of all their games this year there was one game where they struggled at the ruck. It's what sets up many of there tries which the back line get credit for and a big part of the reason why Faf is credited with such quick clearance from the base...because the ball is secured quickly and available to be spread.
Don't get me started on Strauss either because that guy does not deserve the jersey, let alone the captaincy. His poor control over the team is what caused the early momentum loss on Saturday. Maybe they do respect him but they sure as hell do not listen to him. Exactly the same as a Bulls game from a few weeks ago, the ref warns him about the penalty count, Strauss talks to his team, and within minutes Lood is sent off. Sure the player is to blame but if the captain had his ear that infringement would not have occurred. They conceded 6 penalties in the first 12 minutes of the game. This is long before we even start to discuss Strauss' own slowness to get to the ruck and total lack of telling tackles. All he did on Saturday was turn up, throw the ball in at lineouts and walk around with his chest out the rest of the time. It's uninspiring and total nonsense if you ask me. Currently there are at least three better hookers who are all on better form than Strauss. For me Strauss should be dropped until he performs better in S18. In the meantime we have Bismark who does actually cause positive momentum shifts regardless of some of the penalties he gives away. I say get Bizzie in and get Marx in now early, as his understudy, with Skarra or Akker.
Fk reputations.

Frankly unless you get the game plan right and the players mindset right it would probably flop. You would have to have Akkers and co as coaches. Alistair couldn't implement as I see it.

Smith has never come close to destroying Marcel for Marcel has spent the season dominating all and sundry.....that's just a lie

As for Jacques du Plessis being toothless that's another lie, he has been huge all season.....Jake's best forward as he has said in person

You would not know a good player if he slapped you in the face

Snyman is no bigger than PSDT or du Plessis......that's pretty obvious to see......and their profiles confirm that.

Jacques du Plessis, Paul Willemse and Bismark should be in the Bok squad.

du Plessis is by far our best option at 7.....athletic, hard and at 2.01m and 120kg adds plenty of grunt.

Been outstanding for Montpellier this year......regarded as one of the best blindside up North right now

If anyone told me JJ had a poor year at 13 for the Boks culminating in that brilliant performance against the AB's where he made Savea and Smith look like beginners I say they are either fucking stupid or plain prejudiced.

Your problem Moz is that you think that because useless Meyer dropped him, somehow that is the measure of JJ.

Fact is JJ was one of many of Meyer errors and look where useless Meyer ended up

Plum, yes, of course just because the Crusaders approach  for the ABs didn't work it doesn't mean it won't work if the Boks mainly select Lions players. I would love to see the Boks play a Lions type game but IMO it is easier said than done.
Firstly the Boks don't have the Lions coaches and as we all know S18 performance doesn't translate automatically into test level performance.
For sure the Lions get to the rucks faster and the loosies probably link with the backs better than what we saw the Boks do in the last test (or for ages for that matter) so I would agree that the loosies for the Lions should be given serious consideration. But I would not give up on big locks like Eben, PSDT is also mobile & strong but the coaches need to make sure he is healthy & not keep rushing him back too soon. Both those locks are strong, skilled & mobile.  Slack jaw needs coaching badly but he has potential. Yes, Strauss is in a slump, I don't know what sort of form Bismarck has been in lately but I think Strauss deserves a bit more time before he is thrown out. Beast has been doing well lately from what I remember & if he's not so mobile no big loss if you have speed elsewhere.
Your backs are a problem. Faf seems to be a great prospect but the jury is still out at test level, IMO he has to be developed so it would be best for him if he was the backup for a while, not sure who should start ahead of him. Willie is overrated, de Allende has still not regained his form; Jantjies has great potential but coaches need to make sure too much burden is not put on him as he still seems fragile, inside center no one strikes me as a world beater, wings: Mvovo had a very good test on attack but had one tackle. The main problem was no one straightened the line of attack.

JW I think everybody would like to see that. Quesrion is, how mu h easier said than done is it. The Boks are supposedly the best in the land. Will it take them years to get there? Maybe. So what is the alternative for Coetzee. I see it like this... He puts a new team together. He has to have some idea of how he wants them to play? Regardless of his strategy, it's a new team and it will take them time to carry out his ideas as a unit. So whether it's the Lions type of game or the Bulls game, the problem is not the game plan but more the players knowing each other. This I why I think he should have picked 5 Lions players to start. He could have hit the ground running as far as the above is concerned. If it worked well he could have stuck with those players and if not then he'd have been in no worse a position than he finds himself in today. It's pretty obvious to everyone than a back line packed with Lions players would have done a great deal better than what we saw on the weekend. To me, Ireland is no better than a middle of the road S18 team. Remember, Argies beat em in the wc and look at what has been happening to them in the S18. What we will see on Saturday is kicking, kicking and a bit more kicking. He doesn't want to lose again and so he will be playing as conservatively as possible. Fine, we might manage to pull this out of the fire playing that way. What then? Do the Boks continue to play only that way and kick the shit out of the ball, thus evolving our national rugby in no way at all? The products blemishes for me, one n both the backs and the forwards is reputation picks. I cannot understand how somebody who had been poor in S18 makes the squad. They wont improve at National level. I don't know how valuable experience really is but I do think that if all your experience is not helping you at Club level then it's not gonna do a great deal for you at Test level. If you are not on form you don't get in the team. Simple. Especially if your form has been away for a year. Jessie Kriel or Combrink could replace Willie. Hell, Lambie could too. My predictions for the weekend. None of the players who were in poor form prior to Box selection will have great games. If anything Jantjies, Faf and a few others will make the plays that result in the win, if it happens. Strauss will be invisible and Eben will make another one or two big tackles and then stand there flexing for the rest of the game. PSDT will be effective again. Willie will kick the ball every time he gets it regardless of the fact that Ireland now fully expect a kicking game and will thus be ready for 9 out of 10 of the kicks. Aimless kicking down field.

Dave ... what you've made abundantly clear is that your take on an outside centre and the skill set needed there is seriously flawed.
How many is it now?
Taute, JJ, De Allende and of course Kriel.
They have all been proven flops at 13.
Could it be because they've been selected out of position?
Why is it that you can't see this?
How many of these have gone on to dominate world rugby? At any level! I'm not talking about snippets of good play once in a blue moon ... I'm talking about the likes of Brian O'Driscoll ... Danie Gerber ... Sterling Mortlock ...
How many of these have actually had the world sit up like they did with them?
Surely that should be clue enough to abandon your silly ideas of them being world beaters?
They're not, Dave. Never have been ... never will be anything other than average.
It's taken you an age to discard Coenie at 3.
Now that I think about it ... could it be that you have difficulty understanding any of the requirements needed in a rugby team.
Selecting Arno Botha as a test 8 ... Kolisi at 6 ... Kriel at 13 ... HouGat at 9 ... Coenie at 3 ... Lood at 5 ... Fransie at 12 ... and Willie at 15 sure makes one wonder.

Moz last I checked, de Allende, Kriel and Serf made up our test centres and rightly so. One thing Meyer did get right eventually and Coetzee has followed on with for obvious reasons - they are class acts......pretty much confirmed in their showings at test level.

de Allende for instance is streets ahead of Crotty the current AB 12.......not to mention the likes of Farrell for England etc.......different class but you just don't get it do you?

Which v/d Merwe are you on about.....would that be Marcel, the dominant Bull this season who destroyed Sio.....yeah that will be the one.

Your repetitive inclusion of Quinn Roux is childish, all I ever said was that he was a good player, he has never smelt a Bok squad of mine, not even close.

As for du Plessis, well by your take you are telling us Jake is a fool for recruiting him, that you clearly know more than Jake, that Jake is ignorant recruiting him and waxing lyrical about him. The very player Jake works with on a daily basis......but of course you know better than Jake.

Kolisi is a class act as is Arno Botha......these guys are as good as the likes of Schalk, Juan Smith etc were.......the same applies to the likes of Coetzee, Labs, Jaco Kriel, Carr, Mtembu, Notshe and Liebenberg.....all similar players.

Meyer missed the boat completely as he was utterly useless.....at least Coetzee recognises talent as all these players feature in the Bok or A squad....lets just hope he does a better job at directing players than useless Meyer did.....at least he is getting the primary function right by selecting most of the best players.

Dave there isn't a chance in a thousand that your class acts Hougaard, Stepfontein, JJ, Kriel, Venter, Kolisi, Arno Botha would even make the ABs "B" team. Nor is there a chance that Allende would make it on current form...the difference between Crotty and Allende is that Crotty creates for other players. Allende needs to show some creativity....the teams have figured out his tractoring. You want a more creative approach, but really love Stumpkar and his backline equivalent Allende.
So if none of these players are as good as their AB opponent....how do we beat them playing a 'me too' version of their game. The mind boggles.

This is the same Quinn Roux that can only make the squad of Ireland. Another young player tauted- only to disappear into the mist

This board. One or two posts on the subject and then before you know it dwindles into irrelevance. Who the Fk cares what Saffex posted months/years/decades ago? Even if he was wrong. You've all been wrong, so does that mean anything you said from that moment on was wrong by default also? All these ever so clever guys on here but it's like primary school at break time. Gotta give it to Mike. At least he gives reasons for his arguments. That's more than most do. It's boring. Grow up you titheads!

that looks like a TIT Nipple at the top of your Plum dome head!
I just found your twin brother! He is more pointy without the nipple at the end of his head.
