ADAM Ashley-Cooper calls it his "two for the price of one" tackle, but for the Wallabies, his amazing try-saving feat midway through the second half of their seven-point win against the Springboks on Saturday night was priceless.
The Australians held a 16-13 lead when the Springboks were on the attack out wide in the Australian quarter with a two-on-one advantage.
Ashley-Cooper brought down replacement Springboks winger Lwazi Mvovo as he passed the ball to unmarked outside centre Jean de Villiers and then almost simultaneously managed to take out the South African captain, as well.
De Villiers would have almost certainly scored if not for Ashley-Cooper's tackle and the end result could have been different.
"There's been a few jokes about it, two-for-one special," Ashley-Cooper said. "I can't explain it. I was a bit lucky. I committed to one and ended up making another.
"I was lucky I didn't get done for two high shots in the one tackle."
Ashley-Cooper's two-in-one tackle was a wonderful example of the desperation of the Wallabies' defence.
"There was a lot of desperation," he said. "Coming off the back of the disappointing loss to the Kiwis . . . we did only let them in for one try even though they scored 22 points.
"Last night, the first half was very fast and quite intense. The second half, it was the last 20 minutes that won us the game. Fitness probably got us over the line in the end and the desperation in defence was a positive."
