Heyneke Meyer has quit his job as Springbok head coach.

Meyer has informed the South African Rugby Union of his intention not to have his contract renewed when it runs out on 31 December this year.

Meyer did an about turn after announcing after the Springbok’s 3rd place finish at this year’s Rugby World Cup that he wanted to carry on – “to make a difference” as he put it.

But the public outcry, some of the cricitism directed at him and his family and the comments made by various rugby personalities about his coaching caused him to rethink.

Meyer spent some time away with his family over the past month where he discussed the position with them and he decided to put them first.

SARU’s General Council will still meet on December 11 but it will no longer be to review Meyer’s position as coach and the way forward. Instead they will need to get to work at finding a new Springbok coach to take the team forward.

Well now! Didn't see that coming! Thought the decision would come at the hands of others! 
Unfortunately, that probably means Coetzee will take over...out of the frying pan and into the fire!

Has gone off the rails again already.   Blueboks feeling is correct in this case.
Having Meyer or Coetzee as coaches would be equal in backward thinking.  Both know nothing about backline play and Coetzee will be an easy target to get to by the politicos - so if he is appointed they would disgrace the name of the Springboks and should change the team name as well.   One does not want to disgrace the good name of the Springboks any further.
I am very sorry but my support for the Springboks will be waning if Coetzee is appointed - they are going to go the same way as SA Soccer - ie down the tube.
The fools running SA Rugby is getting worse by the day.  They will not be doing the right thing here - advertise the post worldwide and consider application on merit.

What a pity
If some of you on here think that Coetzee is a better choice coach than Meyer, you clearly don't have the best interests of Springbok rugby at heart.
I am in no way saying Meyer was the best, clearly he wasn't .... but Coetzee........please

 This is the saddest day for a good man --> a great man, a gentleman. Thank you Sir for your contributions to SA Rugby. Your selections of blend of experience and steel with youth and flair almost worked. Sure you had alot of detractors but who hasn't? You can't please everyone all the time. Hats off to you sir and wish you and your family well.

If the utterly useless Coetzee gets the job, I will throw my toys out of the cot in a big way.......but I can see it coming.


But thank goodness useless Meyer is history, what a bloody disappointment he was. I was so happy when he was appointed.......talk about a flop

Who Else!!! Meyer has done nothing in the last 4 years, but then who do we pick. Please not Coetzee. He is the most talent squandering coach out there. 
One thing Meyer has done well were to bring through a lot of good young players.
I would almost say that we need to poach on of the all black assistant coaches but that is heresy.
What about Rassie, he pretty much built the stormers before Coetzee drove it into the ground. The stormers played for a short period the most exciting brand of rugby who was even credited by Graham Henry, but Coetzee just ended up dusting off the Jake White Playbook of boring defensive rugby. 
That said, we are stuffed as we have no decent super rugby coaches coming through and half our talent are flocking abroad. 
We need to have 5 players in position that can play for the boks, 2 world class legends that can be managed, ala carter and Mcaw and always strive to have 5 world class players that can walk into any side in the world.

The obvious local choice is Ackerman with his assistant Swys de Bruin


Failing a local coach, get a Kiwi on board, but not Mitchell or Plumtree.......one of the current top s15 Kiwi coaches would do nicely

 In feel sorry for Meyer as a private person as well - he is a gentleman - but he was a real disappointment as a coach.   
However if there is one thing I would really dislike - I nearly said hate - it would be isf Coetzee is appointed as coach.  That according to the following account is what is on the cards:-
" The process of finding a replacement for Heyneke Meyer as Springbok coach has already started.

Meyer on Thursday stepped down from his position after four years at the helm.

SARU’s General Council was set to meet on Friday, December 11 to discuss Meyer’s future as Bok coach, but that meeting will now be to find a suitable replacement.


SARU CEO Jurie Roux will present the process of recruitment as per the recommendation of the High Performance Committee for approval to the Executive Council on Wednesday, after which it will be shared with the provincial unions at the General Council meeting two days later.


While this process needs to be followed, Sport24 has it on good authority that former Stormers coach Allister Coetzee will be the new Springbok coach/"

3 points away from a rugby world cup final, and beating the All Blacks in the process, and two idiotic experienced players and one newbie hugely contributing towards that loss.
All in all..... it was close, just not close enough
The guy held his composure despite all the negative tripe he and his family had to ensure over the years

Originally I thought that he was an excellent choice but he disappointed in many respects.
Cannot say I am sorry.
But who will they select.....hopefully not Coetzee.

I don't know if its worth chucking Meyer away just yet. I would have given him another 2 years and chose the assistants and not let him just choose his own staff. 
We have to sort out our super rugby team too and try keep players in the country for longer.
I like the Australian model that they would only select players from abroad with 60+ caps but would drop it to 30 caps
Meyer really lacked seasoned players with ages of 26 to 29. I still believe South African players peak between those ages. 
His built up to the world cup was extremely poor. Just imagine if the boks won against the aussies in that first game and did not lose to the pumas, it would have been a different year completely but he completely imploded.

Some of us had been warning since the end of the World Cup that Coetzee will be next in line if Meyer goes. I don't see Ackerman getting much support outside of the Lions union, and definitely no political support. Forget about a Kiwi or other foreign coach. Not going to happen. None of the influential ex-players driving the anti-Heyneke campaign is talking about anything other than a local coach. It will be a South African, and right now Coetzee is miles ahead of anyone else in the race. He ticks all the political boxes, and his involvement with White's World Cup champs will count in his favor big time, whether it is significant or not.

If we go with a South African coach- I would actually choose Coetzee- and also get Rassie Erasmus as an assistant coach. Neighnaber- as defence coach. 
Then we also need a specialist backline coach- think we need an Australian or New Zealand coach for the backline. 
The reality is that Coetzee has no competition- because most of our coaches are so poor. Look no further than Gary Gold at the Sharks- who said last year at the end of the SuperXV that he wanted to be the coach. 
His promised role was as commercial manager to lure players like Fatt Stevens and Mouritz Botha

Of course it's sad for the guy. But let's also consider how sad it has been for som .players sitting on the sofa when they knew they deserved to be at the WC. He did certainly have more than enough time to prepare and he failed miserably. The narrow loss to the ABs was not nearly as narrow as it looked. Everyone knows that. The Boks were never gonna win that game. What was it...one in eight wins against the ABs prior to that. So really...it was no surprise. The Welsh win was extremely lucky. He never brought back any silverware and he favored his friends while also trying to bring even more guys out of retirement, only their pride in the jersey prevented him from doing that. Some, like Matfield, well enough has been said about that. He should not be credited for bringing in new players...that's his job. FFS most of those guys played themselves into the team. Lol he was actually gonna play JDV, what the hell!!!??? He could have gone to the WC with great team. BUT instead he went with a sub par team and on top of that had zero game plan. Anyway, the WC doesn't matter too much, the RC, that's where it is at for me. And dammit, we at no point looked like winning that either in the last four years. And, I will be unpopular for saying this, but saying that he has to do the right thing for his family. Whatever HM. How about manning up and admitting that he screwed up. Then I'd have more respect for him. Basically what he is saying is "The team I have is not skillful enough so we play shyte rugby because my guys suck. I have been unlucky, and now my family are being abused so it is for them that I resign." IE shouldering no blame. That's a cowardly move in my book. You can bet that if had received a call this week saying that it has already been decided that he would stay on...he would have. He knew he was gonna get the sack and he chose the girls way out the door. Good riddance as far as I am concerned. This is my opinion, obviously and I'm sorry if it offends anyone. Not supremely happy about Coetzee getting the knod either and I hope he doesn't, but if he does then all the best to him and I'll back him as long as doesn't disgrace the jersey like Meyer did. My prediction though...look for a nomination out of left field. I think it's on the cards. Oh...NO MORE RUAN PIENAAR. Yeeeeeeeeeaaaaaay :)

...seems to be a bit of a pattern emerging here...Springboks without a coach, Stormers without a coach, Kings without a coach...sorry state of affairs indeed..



Cape Town - According to Sport24 readers, Heyneke Meyer's decision to remove himself from the Springbok coaching equation is good news for South African rugby. 

It had become a matter of 'when' and not 'if' Meyer would part ways with the Boks, and Sport24 had asked readers via an online poll what they wanted to see happen in the Bok hot-seat. 


We gave them three options ... 

1. Heyneke Meyer must stay on as coach!

2. Allister Coetzee ticks all the boxes for me.

3. We need some New Zealand influence. John Mitchell or John Plumtree please.


With well over 1 000 votes cast, the results were overwhelming. 

Only 17% of our readers wanted Meyer to stay on as coach. 

But there was also some not-so-good news for Allister Coetzee, who is the overwhelming favourite for the post. 


Just 25% felt that Coetzee should be given the job, while 58% suggested the Boks go with a New Zealand flavour and opt for either Mitchell or Plumtree. 

SARU are expected to move swiftly in appointing the new man in charge.
