It could be worse. Coetzee is not a great coach- but he is probably better than most of our coaches,
He appears to be a good people person- so hopefully he gets some quality assistant coaches, ideally a N ew Zealand backline coach

Coetzee has the support of about 20% of the 22 000 fans who voted in an opinion survey held by News24 recently. The rumoured support coaches won't get 10% support from the public.
This shows how desperately poor and disliked he is - but you must realize he is a political appointment done without regard to competence and it would be most likely that the fans will just stay away from tests where he is the coach and public support of the Springbok team will largely vanish when he is in charge.
He is even worse a coach than Meyer was - that says something about that one.

It's what takes place in South Africa every day.
A dumb ass who doesn't know his arse from his elbow is appointed at senior level ... (because of race and skin colour, nothing else) ... and to ensure the jobs gets done properly, he's given a capable staff of currently disadvantaged people to run the department on his behalf.
He would fail horribly if it weren't for his "subordinates" ... but as is the norm these days ... he'll take the credit for all the success.
What really gets my goat is when I hear how the currently disadvantaged folk out there say they're happy to accept this incompetent moron as head coach ... BUT ... just as long as he's given a skilled team of "junior" coaches to help him do his job.
What is wrong with this picture???
We the public ... the fan ... are taking it up the ass without complaint.
Drives me insane ... !!!!!!!

I think we all agree on that - but for a coach to coach in SA - he must first get a degree in ANC politics and rugby has nothing to do with that .

Coetzee isn't a quota selection. He is easily the most qualified of the coaches available.
It was never going to be a foreign coach. Mitchell and Jones are off the table anyway.
Coetzee was always going to be it and anyone calling for Meyer to go had to know who would take his spot. Ackerman doesn't have the pedigree.....yet.
Coetzee has been coaching provincial level for almost 20 years, Bok assistant for several years and while he was at Stormers/WP they were easily the strongest most consistent of the SA franchises. His players like him and play hard for him, he's a real gentleman, loyal to his assistants. Kept a good balance of youth and experience.
Don't expect a radical new approach or an open attacking game that sacrifices your defensive abilities. He's smart enough to know that doesn't work unless you have the talent to pull it off with minimal error - just ask the Jaguares how that's going - and it plays right into the hands of our two biggest foes. But he knows defense and a structured game built around superior set pieces and competition at the ruck and tackle to create counter-attack opportunities are the best chance we have.
Anyway, his biggest challenge isn't going to be the gameplan but its going to be the experience and talent drain.

Virtually no real rugby lovers in SA want this incompetent as SA coach. There is a limited scope for playing the kind of rugby he is known for. Never the title winner - always losing big when in the play-off stages.
Coetzee was so poor as backline assistant coach that White was forced to bring Eddie Jones on board in 2007 to deal with the backline issues.

Clevermike- all things are relative. Coetzee is a solid coach- probably better than most of the other SA Super rugby coaches. He has more experience that much is sure. If he gets a good backline attack coach he could do well.
Some say that Swyss Bryn is the brains behind Ackerman- with John Mitchell the initial catalyst. Maybe Swyss could get involved with the Boks.

"But he knows defense and a structured game built around superior set pieces and competition at the ruck and tackle to create counter-attack opportunities are the best chance we have"
I dont like that sentence. Makes it seem as though we...
A) Dont have the talent to play attacking rugby and
B) we are "lucky" to be considered a top rugby nation
I dont believe that for a moment. The game has moved in. Yes set pieces are very important and so is a good defence. Though the game has evolved to the point that you can no longer beat the best teams if you do not have a good attacking feather in your cap.
PS the Springboks are NOT the Jaguars.

Plum - I was talking specifically about how we beat Aus and NZ. I expect we should beat a 6N team anytime we face them.
But Aus and NZ especially are a different animal. Playing a free-flowing open game plays right into their hands, into their strengths. Its not smart. Would be like going into a fight and letting the other guy set the rules to his own advantage. We have the talent to play attacking rugby and at the right times we should but they are more talented in those areas, more intuitive to that type of game, have higher fitness levels and frankly their rugby IQ when it comes to knowing where the space is and where the support is higher
The parallel I was drawing with the Jaguares is that here you have a team made up almost entirely of the Argentinian squad that played superbly balanced rugby in the WC yet is floundering in a regional comp they should have taken by storm. Their approach from the first game in Super Rugby has been to to play the entertaining, attacking, ball in hand, offloading rugby anytime and from anywhere on the field. Structure and territorial considerations have gone out of the window. Problem is that their skills have not been up to the task, teams have beaten them by feeding off those mistakes, and their all-out attacking approach has cost them defensively.
The Lions are in a similar situation although their balance is obviously much better, but their defense has also been suspect. They gave up 32 to the Chiefs, 34 to the Highlanders, 43 to the Crusaders. Their games are lovely to watch and thoroughly enjoyable but we want to beat these guys (NZ). I think we win both of the last two Ellis Park tests if our approach had been a little more measured, instead we lost because we were out on our feet, stretched thin by a game plan NZ is better equipped for.
I'm not saying we play dumb stampkar rugby. No one wants to see that. We need to be better at what we're good at and smarter. Take the kick chase. Moving the ball 30 meters up the field with a well weighted kick and having it come down in a properly contested situation ripe for retaining possession or creating a turnover. Its the NZ teams that have added it to their repertoire and are using it more often and to much better effect while the SA teams seem unable to muster any consistency either with the quality of the kick or the quality of the chase. The last time we were truly competent in that area we won the Tri-Nations, and Super Rugby titles.

Oimatey, nice to read an opinion in favour of the likely Bok coach that says he's the best SA coach for the job. It doesn't help anyone the Bok coach is considered just a political selection. He still will have a bumpy road as the talent pool is still the same as are the game plans of most SA teams. I wish him well.

Alistair Coetzee is not a quota coach or a politically motivated coach. In my not so humble opinion as a South African he is best suited for the position. Other than Johann Ackerman there is no-one else......and why should Ackerman get the position ahead of Coetzee? Mike's rants about the Southern Kings being the ping pong ball of Rugby is absolute rubbish and so is he's claims about Coetzee being a quota and politically inspired selection. It doesn't matter who is selected as the new Bok coach because he'll have to abide by an racist selection policy as laid down by SARU. Sure there is merit in believing that Coetzee is not a good coach but in 22 years since re-admission what has South Africa have to show in the trophy cabinet...as a rugby country we're a damn joke. Let's not forget the disastrous selections as national coach of Rudolph Straueli, Harry Viljoen and a few others....not to mention the deep dislike of Jake White and Meyer which we all had to suffer and continue to suffer.....so why was it A-Ok to have them and not Coetzee? The ideal solution is to have Coetzee as national coach but to groom Ackerman as his assistant as well as some members of the support staff of the Lions.

Denny ... I rest my case.
We saw how much he contributed to the Boks as a backline coach ... so much so that someone competent had to be called in to assist ... and what a noticeable difference the new recruit made.
Jones helped us win the World Cup ... not Coetzee.
We all saw how stagnant the backline was under Coetzees guidance. Same goes for the Stormers.
Alistair Coetzee is definitely a quota pick. An incompetent gravy trainer with his outstretched cupped hands ready to receive this handout.
He may be one small step up from Pieter De Villiers but that doesn't change the fact that his appointment is based on skin colour and skin colour alone.
He was discarded by the Stormers and rightly so ... and now he's the new Bok coach.
Here we go again. Another moron at the helm.
I hope they give him Chester Williams and Pieter De Villiers as his assistant coaches ... and I hope Ackerman rejects this farce.
Why would anyone want to have your name linked to this absurdity??

The last two tests against the AB's statement is not correct. We beat the AB's in 2015 at Ellis Park despite a determined effort by Matfield to lose the test - calling a line-out to himself and then got out-jumped in the process and as a result the AB's scored a try. The only reason we won is because of a miracle 55 meter penalty conversion by Lambie.
The kicking issue raised by you is also a problem case. We had one of the worst kicking flyhalfs in the team for years. Kicks cannot be followed up when they are too far ahead and that was what I call donkey-kicking. Most of our flyhalfs make stupid kicks - even cross-kicks as well. It happened that they try a cross-kick to a tall opponent with their own wing a small player, etc. Does not work out.
Kicking should always be part of the game - but should be strategic and a strategy used to put opponents under pressure. I do not know why our kickers are so poor in what they do when kicking away balls, In our case it means literally just handing over possession to the opponents because of inaccurate donkey kicking. Pollard has developed the same problem - kicking accuracy went out of the window.
I was impressed with the kicking game of Du Plessis on Saturday - but he is a youngster with very little experience and I hope he learns with experience. We will see a lot of him this season and it would be interesting to see how he develops in future.
The problem with backline play in SA has been evident for years now. You cannot play 10 man rugby in the present era - or even 13 man rugby with the inside center being expected to play as a crashballer. That is the way that Meyer insisted on playing - but what was wore he became a 9 player coach -the scrummie passing the ball back to the forwards and not to the flyhalf.
Coetzee for years with the Stormers/WP always flopped with his backline players. In 2013 he invited Jantjies to play for the Stormers and the player flopped badly at flyhalf. Jantjies went back to the Lions and developed further - so what does it tell you about the backline coaching by Coetzee. The answer is simple - he is clueless.
The excuse always raised about his appointment is that he must get a decent backline supporting coach. I have seen in the papers what they wrote about his supporting staff and what I have seen is a joke. He would get an even worse backline coach than Meyer had if the paper speculation is anything to go by. The other issue is the attacking coach - Meyer used Van Graan - a forward - and Ludeke used Matfield for the purpose and that was why the backlines were such flops.
The other flop is that when the backline players pass the ball and the receiver gets tackled there is no virtually ball protection by team mates and either penalties or turnovers are resulting from those moves. There are very few backline players in SA who are of any use in such cases. I would say De Allende is one of those rare players. Coetzee prefers the midgets who cannot do it and we for years has been suffering from loosies who are too slow to do that job by following the ball and who were absolutely useless ball handlers as well.
The other problem is that players too often are incapable of making strategic and well-timed accurate passes. They either do not know when to pass. to whom to pass the ball and how to off-load balls after drawing in more than one defender, thus creating space for other players. Most backline player have limited ball sense in the relevant regard.
I am not saying that players cannot be coached to overcome the problems listed - but Coetzee has been a party to all of those deficiencies and I do not think he will be the answer in this case. We need a decent backline coach and we will not get one.

We will soon see the mess thuis incompetent and his equally incompetent supporting staff will come to. Must say we have been screwed again by the politicos in SARU and we should not be surprised by the outcome.
