Powerful defence powers NZ win Sportal.co.nz - (18/08/2012) - 4 Comments

Superior defence wrung the spirit out of Australia as the All Blacks claimed a 27-19 victory to open the Investec Rugby Championship season in Sydney on Saturday evening.

Consistently catching the Australians behind the advantage line, the All Blacks prevented the Australian dangermen, halfback Will Genia, wing Digby Ioane and fullback Kurtley Beale, from having any influence on the outcome.

And when the Australians got within five points and looked to steal a late win, the powerful defence killed off any chance the home team. It was a turnover steal by replacement hooker Andrew Hore, and a long downfield kick by fullback Israel Dagg, two minutes from the end, that finally killed the Australian chances.

Dan Carter landed a penalty goal on fulltime to make it 17 points for the game from a conversion and five penalty goals.

Australia narrowed a 15-point margin to five points early in the second half but were unable to string together enough attacking opportunities to consistently test the All Blacks line. A solid period of control through the middle stages of the second half was a case of both sides looking for the winning breakthrough.

Ultimately, Australia paid the price for a lackadaisical first half which belied the time spent in preparation by the home side ahead of the match.

New Zealand owed a lot to its front five, hooker Keven Mealamu having an outstanding game foraging for ball at the breakdown while newcomer lock Luke Romano had a strong game. Flanker Liam Messam was also prominent in the first three-quarters while when the pressure went on captain Richie McCaw led from the front with some surging runs.

No.8 Kieran Read made some powerful tackles as he marked his return to top rugby.

However, it wasn't a perfect display by the All Blacks by any stretch and with handling errors, and poor choices in passing, another intensive week of preparation is likely ahead of next week's return match.

The All Blacks took time to get over the Australian scrum, but a powerful tighthead in the 66th minute produced a penalty which took the All Blacks into an attacking position which ended with Hosea Gear bundled into touch by the corner flag.

Beale had a shocker of a first half, beaten by both try scorers, he had handling woes, the most obvious of which created the second try of the game.

Early penalty goals were traded by the five-eighths, Berrick Barnes for Australia after two minutes and Carter in the ninth minute.

But at the first opportunity afterwards, from a midfield scrum, Read fed the ball left to Carter who ran wide, and then passed behind second five-eighths Sonny Bill Williams and Gear while Dagg looped behind Gear along the sideline. He then beat Beale on the outside to score wide out.

Australia stepped into catch-up mode but failed to secure from two opportunities, the first from a tap penalty taken by Genia but the All Blacks defences held superbly and then in the 33rd minute a charge down of a Barnes kick opened up a chance. The ball was taken on the rebound by Beale and he in-passed to No.8 Scott Higginbotham and he dropped the ball cold.

From the scrum the ball was cleared downfield by Carter but Genia's in pass to Beale was also dropped. Another scrum provided a chance for another set piece play where Read tidied the ball to feed halfback Aaron Smith running wide. The ball moved through Carter and Dagg whose quick hands created space on the outside for right wing Cory Jane to also go around Beale to score wide out.

From the restart the Australians secured the ball and from a maul the ball was retained and it was wing Ioane who made a strong run close to the ruck to set up the chance for lock Nathan Sharpe to cross by the posts. Barnes' conversion made the half-time score 18-10.

Scorers: Australia 19 (Nathan Sharpe try; Berrick Barnes con, 4 pen) New Zealand 27 ( Israel Dagg, Cory Jane tries; Dan Carter con, 5 pen), HT: 10-18

Well  sasuke uchicha,,,,according to not so clever mike, the problem was we did'nt cover ourselves with gloty. WTF Might have to find out what this product is and where we can purchase it cause gloty could make all the difference. LMAO

For me as you probably have already guessed, they could have really benefited from at least one if not more of the Mighty Chiefs.

Especially Aaron Cruden as he would add the X factor lacking in our attack.

Hopefully he gets a run next Saturday as the dynamic duo of Cruden and SBW together would cut the Aussies to pieces like they shredded all opposition teams throughout the SuperXV comp.

Maybe rotate our wingmen as i expected more from them in the finishing dept or is that being too harsh.

No doubt we'll see a more convincing win on home soil now we've got the first one under our belt.

Brycy ans Sasu

I wrote earlier that I was not impressed by the performance of the teams involved and I remain with that staement.   The ball handling skills pf the Wallabies was the worst I have seen from any school team over the past decade.   To take a quick tap after a penalty  in your own 22 like Genia did - was lunacy.    That was followed by a comedy of errors that was frankly unbelieveable and then an askew line out throw.

That was only one example of what went wrong - I would not like to continue trying to remember the rest.   Let me state clearly - Beale must have had a heavy drinking session the night before - he was so atrociously bad that he could only have played like that with a massive hangover.

Then there was the litany of convertable penalties handed to the All Blacks by Pocock.

I am sorry to say - that the All Blacks should have beaten that bumbling Wallaby team by 30 points to convince me that they were really convincing victors in this case.   By the way - the long discussions McCaw had with the referee was the really only memorable thing about this game.   It took place throughout the match - and must have taken at least 15% out of the total. playing time.   Was McCaw trying to tell the referee hoiw he should ref the match- or what?

Sorry to be nasty - but I was hoping for a better match than the one that was put up in this case.

Thats fine not so clever mike. We have learned to tune out all your negativity.

It would be easy to say the Boks should have beaten the Argies by at least 50 points too if they were any good. Right?

Will your captain question any of the refs rulings or clarify his northern hemisphere interpretations of the rule book . If not i suggest then that  he is weak  because communication is key in preventing the repeat of any mistakes that may cause yellow cards being handed out.

You yarpies are so funny though how you keep harping on about the refs being somehow susceptible to McCaws hypnotic powers of persuasion.

Will the Boks beat the Wobblies by 30 points? Sounds like unrealistic expectations right?  Why not then apply the same standards to your team? You can't can you and thats why your argument is so lame.

Brycy

Read what I wrote about the Springboks - and you will realize I am not being one-eyed.   They were sub-standard to0 - but at least they were not playing a bunbling and atrocious Wallaby team.  Meyer said as much after the match - so I am not being negative.

The Wallabies was ridiculously poor in the first half - failure to realize that would be a mistake by the All Blacks and give them a false sense of security - that was the main thrust of my comments.   By the way the All Blacks were really not up to much in the second half - so put that in your pipe and smoke it.   That Was the reason why there were less points scored in the second half anyway.

Just one other point - and open your eyes and see that - how many try scoring opportunities by the All Blacks went missing bexcause of poor ball handling?   What i wrote aboiut the 30 point margin is a fact - if you play a team that under-performs - like the Wallabies did massively - why don't you optimize the opportunities offered?

Yes - MCCaw has the right to query decisions - but constantly throughout the match is ridiculous.   McCaw has normally the tendency to try and intimidate referees - but yesterday he took it to new heights.   Rugby fields is not the place for debating societies - yesteday was an exact example why it should not happen.

If thats not being negative not so clever mike then i'm the tooth fairy.

Shock me and say something positive about anything for a change LMAO.

Where in the rule book does it say you can't query the ref throughout the game? Nowhere. To say otherwise is laughable.

You say the refs are intimidated by McCaw now. I can see them shaking in their boots.LMAO.  You're delusional and i suggest you change your meds to something abit more anti psychotic.

So what if the ABs made some mistakes. It was their first game together for ages and a hard fought match playing away on enemy soil was to be expected. History confirms that this is a perfectly normal scoreline between NZ and Oz..

You also seem to be writing the Aussies off already when i can't see SA beating them at all. See how you go.

It was a very satisfying win IMO as beating the Aussies is like beating your ugly big brother and your relentless attempts at undermining or belittling our success will only fall on deaf ears.

Both teams made errors combined with the penalty count meant the game was a stop start affair which prevented any decent flow or the running rugby both sides are capable of. Thats just what happens sometimes.

You havent read my posts either as i would have used more of the Mighty Chiefs especially Cruden but i'm not the coach and if Cruden gets to play expect a much more convincing win and greater point difference next Saturday...

If theses two games were meant to advertise to the world the Rugby Championship then I am afraid they both failed. The first game was full of mistakes and I rated it a 5 out of 10 for entertainment. The Boks win over the Argies rated not better at a 6 as it was just plain predictable and a tad boring.

Never thought I would say that but if anyone thought that was a great start to the RC then they are not rugby purists. I am hopeful that this blowout will be better for the Boks but as I wrote in another post not getting that bonus point may count at the end of the series?

I agree with much of what Mike has said in that the AB's should have put the bumbling Wallabies away with the way they played. Nonetheless, I predicted a close game between these two teams and in the end it transpired. Mac-cheat is not only good at what he does but he is obviously learned to intimidate straight out of the Sean Fitzpatrick manual for "how to be a prick on the rugby field"....................

However, credit where its due after all they still played bad and won fairly easily and done it away from their home ground which is the key to winning this series. For us we must win at least two games away and maintain 100% record at home. We will struggle to beat the AB's at home but we need to take next weeks game and then follow up with an away win in OZ?

Brycy

Radtad summerized comments on your post  very, very well - so I am not going to repeat what he said.   But what you said about the All Blacks is laughable.   They played three tests in June - two of them very good - the third one more or less on par with yesterday's performance.  That is defibnitely not ages ago - it is less than 2 months ago.

The second issue is summed up in one question?   Whereever did I mention the Springboks beating the Walalabies at all?   A bumbling team can correct their shortcomings and can play well next time around - and if you read what I said about the outcome of the series - I still don't think that the Springboks will NOT be ahead of them on the log.

As to the captains talking to the referee is concerned - I am aware that they can - but conferences is for conference halls - not for rugby fields.

More paranoid shit calling into question the competence of the ref not to mention his impartiality, honesty, objectivity. and personal integrity suggesting corruption and match fixing. Typical yarpies undermining the integrity of the whole refereeing system. You're embarrasing yourselfs and appearing like very poor sportsmen .

There the sheep shagger goes again with his "yarpie" word that he cant even spell.

If you think the AB's were good then you are more stupid than we give you credit for. The ref ruined that game with his constant penalising but that aside, the Aussies were so poor on the night, I reckon Scotland would have beaten them comfortably in the dry.. They could not hang onto a ball or get anything going yet with 2 mins to go, they were 5 points behind and in with a shout to snatch the game. AB's are usually clinical and should have put 40 points against them at least. After round 1 of the Championship, I see no clear favourite to win this. The Boks problem was that they should have run the Argies pack around a lot more. We played into their hands by playing 10 man rugby. I can see the AB's beating the Boks in NZL and The Boks winning in SA. Not a very "scary" AB's side. You lose Conrad Smith and all of a sudden the backs go to pap!

Why are you even on an SA site Brycy? Why dont you go blog about the AB's?? Here's an awesome NZL site...www.wef#*ksheep.co.nz.... You can all give your misguided opinions on how the AB's are so good on there...

We should have beaten the Aussies by how much? How much will you yarpies beat them by.?

Me thinks the Aussies will kick your yarpie butts LMAO. Excuse that colloquialism you find so offensive. Oversensitive types you yarpies.

You stupid so-and-so.   Get it into your thick skull.  I am not moaning about the refereeing and get it straight.  I wrote about McCaw.  His performances over the past Super series and also on Saturday was not a house on fire - what was is his increasing talking to the referees.  He may get away with it with New Zealand referees - but if that happen to any SA referees - he would spent 10 minutes in the bin to teach him manners.

hey wassup clevermike brycy and co, :)
good weekend footy even if it was a rusty display and a little lackluster, ive been blogging on abs.com which is my regular stomping grounds and wanted to see what the locals thought of the IRC tests in the weekend, but i cant help but chuckle at he barb involved with some of the blogs, plenty of rugby to go round with out the insults aye??? but im not here to play mummy and daddy, i just want the kids to cut it out, or no icecream for anyone,,,,except me and the All Blacks, LMAO, :P

anyways like most blogs, i agree with most of what was posted here about the weekends game and disagree with others.
clevermike was correct that was a very poor display of handaling errors from the wallabies, but that wasnt what cost them the game, it was the All Blacks almost impentrable defence which won it.
here are some of the stats i found very interesting in the game,,,

possession
All Blacks - 42%
wallabies - 58%

territory
All Blacks - 46%
wallabies - 54%

handaling errors
All Blacks - 15
wallabies - 19

tackles made/missed
All Blacks - 133/9
wallabies - 74/16

i agree with clevermike that the wallabies made a lot of comical errors, but most of them were due to good pressure from the ABs which was relentless from the first blow of the refs whistle.
but as noted by the stats, the All Blacks also made many errors but the majority of the All Blacks errors were unforced, wayward passes and what have u and thats why it was easy to see the score was not dominant, there was never any real doubt that the All Blacks would lose, even in the last 5 mins after barnes got that penalty kick over.
i like many expected the All Blacks to win more comfortably then they did (17pt win was my prediction) my we also have to remember that its not as if the All Blacks were playing england or ireland, they were playing the wallabies and anyone who knows the history between the two countries knows that a close game despite the circumstances leading up to it is hardly surprising. i for one am happy to just get the win against the wallabies who like the Boks are the All Blacks greatest rivals.

im with brycy though when it comes to McCaw and his chats with the ref, i dont see whats wrong with McCaw talking to the ref and IMO it wasnt that long a chat. if u take a look at pocock, he too had lengthy conversastions with the ref.
to say that McCaw was intimidating the referee is merely an opinion, cos IMO McCaw was better trying to get a feel of how the ref was rolling and interperting his desicions, cos rollaind was seriously influencing the flow of the game. it was poor performance from the ref and i wouldnbt say that was why the ABs didnt put on more points, cos he also stemmed the flow of the wallabies attack at times too. this led me to believe that rollaind justa int use to the tempo played by southern hemisphere teams.
nothing wrong with what McCaw was doing asking the ref to clarify things and gicen that the ref not only allowed it but afforded pocock the same time if not more to chat, then so be it. could have been a lot easier if players knew where they stood in the game like walsh does when making his decisions.

i also think that McCaws spXv season was satisfactory, he missed a good chunk of the season due to injuries, but his return saw him rack up some nice stats in most if not all his games.
while i see the rugby world through my slick AB tinted glasses, McCaws performance in the international games in 2012 is where i think McCaw has risen to the top once more and been hands down the best loose forward in 2012, if we were to go by stats for the All Blacks in 2012 alone, then it would be unquestionable, as for his performance against the wallabies, it was another gritty display from the king and why i have no problems with playing seasoned veterans as long as they add value to the team.

here are the stats from the openside flankers from all three SANZAR teams (didnt include the pumas cos it sucked big time),,,

runs made
McCaw - 5
pcock - 7
coetzee - 11

metrs made
McCaw - 23 mtrs
pcock - 1 mtr
coetzee -  25 mtrs

tackels made/missed
McCaw - 17/0
pcock - 6/1
coetzee -  8/1

tackle breaks
McCaw - 3
pcock - 0
coetzee - 1

offloads
McCaw - 1
pcock - 0
coetzee - 0

penalties conceded
McCaw - 1
pcock - 2
coetzee - 1

handaling errors
McCaw - 1
pcock - 0
coetzee - 1

having watched all the All Blacks , wallabies and Bok test this year, im not surprised at all that McCaw is outworking his SANZAR counterparts, and i can only hope it contiues.

but anyway, the All Blacks were poor, but that could be due to rustiness, but a win against the TriNat champs in their own backyard is nothing to sneeze at and given theres still lots of room for improvement, u would have to say its scary just what the All Blacks can do once they are all firing on all cylinders.

was very surprised the Boks couldnt get a 4 try bonus point against the pumas in their own backyard, IMO 27-6 is very average consdiering the quality of the pumas. if the All blacks were to play like that against the pumas in le platt or in NZ, i would consider that a massive upset, i expect 40 points wasy in both test matches and also for the All Blacks to keep the pumas to single digits, anything less is unacceptable.

from what ive seen in the first weekend of IRC, a lot of rustiness that has hopefully been worked out, but again my though my slick All Black glasses, i reckon the All blacks are clear favourites to win the inaugural IRC comp, with the Boks in joburg the only match i can see stopping it for being a clean sweep, otherwise 2012 looking awesome for the All Blacks.

GO ALL BLACKS!!!

Thanks for the stats - interesting reading.   Let me say in th first instance that I agree with you about rustiness - that could have been the cause of the problms encountred by the players.   Let me say in the first instance - I was facetious in mentioneing the discussions between McCaw and the referee.   He did speak to him more than I have noticed in other games - but then there is another factor that is a fact and that is the interpretations of the Northern hemisphere referees differ from what is normally applies by the Southern hemnisphere ones.   That could account for the discussions McCaw and pocok had with the referee.   However, I agree that I should not have entered into further discusiions with brycy on that score.

I really expected after the display of the New Zealand teams in Super 15 show piece rugby from the All Blacks - hence my disappointment about what was really dished up.   I have no poblm with their defence - it was on attack that there were too many handling errors - without any real pressure from the opposition.   On at least two occassions players knock on balls where they had  a fairly easy opportunity to score tries.

When it comes to errors under pressure - yes to err is human - but to cause the pressure by actions brought on by yourself is really what is ridiculous.   You just don't take quick kicks within yu own 22 like Genia did.   You just don't Beale style knocks on balls when not under any real pressure.   Stats are wonderful things - but they do not always reflect what happened during specific componens of the game.   Some mistakes invariably leds to points for the opposition - like happened on Saturday in the case of the Wallaby blunders.   Others are not as critical - but nevertheless impact more indirectly on the outcom of the game.

By the way - 33 handling errors in a game is about 20 too many.   Penalties conceded by individual playes also seems to be an issue.   It is not where such players make mistakes leading to penalties - it is whether they are convertable into points.   I think that the penalties conceded in the case of Pocock and McCaw all lead to conversions - the one of Cpetzee not so.

By the way I lovve to takethe mickey out of New Zealanders about McCaw - he is apaprently in New Zealand above criticism so any remarks about his performances or conduct always lead to responses that leads to enjoyment on my part.

Now back to rugby - I do believe that the All Blacks are the best all-round side in the Championship - but if they continue to play like on Saturday they are going to create problems for themselves in the remainder of the competition.   Bumbling does not win series - but i trust they realize the shortcomings and correct them.   On the whole I think the games on Saturday had some really disturbing scenarios which needs urent correcting..

Clevermike, Pocock spent more time chatting to the ref than Richie! The only difference was that Pocock was trying to pull the wool over the ref's eyes so that he can cheat at the next phase of play whereas Richie treated the ref like a human being - if you doubt this ask yourself who pulled Pieter Van Zyl off the ref when everyone else close by just stood there looking on!

@clevermike,

LMFAO, McCaw above critisim in NZ??? thats a silly thing to say about the first king of NZ who will bring about world peace and cure cancer right after he wins the next RWC by himself when our other 14 players are all red carded by a saffa ref hell bent on leveling the bryce lawernce score,
fair play bro, i thought that was some funny as shizzle, lol, :D

i think there will be a more cohesive display from all teams this weekend bar the pumas. im glad theyre in the comp, it was needed and will bennifit them in the long run, but i just cannot see them winning any games, but i guess scotland has proven that us hsould never say never.
i would be surprised if both the ABs and wallabies play with as many errors as they did, that really was unacceptable, but something tells me that All Blacks were playing at 60% capacity at best and once all cylinders are firing, pheeeeeeeeeeew, its going to be a good night for All Blacks fans, no matter who they face,,,,,well fingers crossed anyways, :)
