is another reason why. ExSuperpsort:

The DHL Stormers are slowly working towards full muster as the Vodacom Super Rugby season approaches, with another clutch of Springboks set to return to the team for Friday night’s warm-up fixture against the Toyota Cheetahs at Newlands.

The Stormers dispensed with the SWD Eagles 34-3 in their opening game in George at the weekend, but the Cheetahs, as fellow Super Rugby participants, are considered the toughest opponent of the pre-season phase. They are thus the ones the Cape side will consider to be the dress rehearsal for the real thing, which comes in the form of the opening clash with the Vodacom Bulls in Pretoria on 14 February.

The Stormers will play the Boland Cavaliers in another warm-up game before the Super Rugby season starts. However, with the game taking place just one week before the trip to Loftus, the normal policy is to include fringe players for that fixture, plus maybe a top player or two who would only then be fully ready to play after coming back from injury.

So Allister Coetzee will field as close to possible as he can get to a full strength team for the Cheetahs game, and Boks Eben Etzebeth and Siya Kolisi are likely additions to the group that won in George. Nizaam Carr, struck down in the early stages of the year by a virus, is likely to return only for the Boland game.

Jean Kleyn will be back in the selection mix this week too, but fellow promising young lock Ruan Botha is only set to return in another two weeks. Botha was impressive towards the end of the last Super Rugby season and also before he was injured in the Currie Cup, and is likely to be Etzebeth’s partner in the first choice second row combination.

There is plenty of depth in the position though, with Gerbrandt Grobler back in action after missing most of last season, and Argentine international Manuel Carizza is also still on the Stormers books until the end of the year. Last year there were plenty of injury disruptions at lock and coach Coetzee will be hoping that is not repeated.

Another area where the Stormers depth was tested in 2014 was prop, with first choices Frans Malherbe and Steven Kitshoff missing for most of the year, while promising youngster Oli Kebble was also injured more than he was available. The good news there is that Kitshoff made a strong return to rugby at the weekend, and Kebble also impressed Coetzee.

“It is a long time since Kitsie last played but he did so well. I am very pleased with what I saw from the front row guys, not just Kitshoff, but also Wilco Louw when he came on, and Kebble,” said Coetzee.

“The scrums were outstanding,” he added. (PLEASE NOTE ALL FANS OF THE HAPLESS WEE CHIEFIES!!!)

It goes without saying that the Cheetahs on Friday will present the Stormers with a more searching examination of that facet of play as the serious part of the build-up gets underway. The Stormers have made a poor start to the last two Super Rugby seasons so will be placing a high premium on getting it right in the warm-up games. (HENCE WATCH OUT BULLE!!!)

Oaks I am afraid its still a few weeks to go until you can watch the Mighty Stormers but try and be patient!

The Stormers have a quality side if useless Coetzee can get the selections right.

They have 3 quality props in Kitshoff, Malherbe and Kebble

Good hookers in Scara and Mbonambi.....although both lack grunt

They have 3 quality locks in Etzebeth, Kleyn and Ruan Botha

They have depth amongst the loosies in Kolisi, Carr, Rhodes, Elstadt and Vermeulen

Two useful 9's in Groom and Schrauder

Solid enough at 10, but nothing special in Catrakillis and Coleman

Some quality to choose from in the midfield in de Allende, Taute, Kobus v/Wyk, de Jongh and Pat Howard

Out wide they have Taute, Kobus v/Wyk, Kolbe, Senatla and EW Viljoen

Their biggest issue is a useless coach

A nice forwards pack but not the best of the comp.
Appart from their very conservative coach their main deficiency is their lack of a quality pair of halves. To be up there and reach the final is fundamental.
Groom is just a decent HB and Catrakilis and Coleman are average at best. This is clearly not enough. These last years we've seen reaching the final pairs like:

Nick Phips-------- B. Foley
A. Ellis  ---------  C. Slade-D. Carter
T. Kerr-Barlow--- A. Cruden
W. Genia--------- Q. Cooper

All test level players.
Stormers' halves are nowhere near the pairs mentioned above.

besides they have a too young and inexperienced backline,.... some good prospects like Sebatla and Kolbe but they have yet to prove they are good SR players. There have been lots of good small outside backs who have excelled at sevens but failed at SR level.

Why would all eyes be focused on the hopelessly overrated plodders who finished last season in 11th place? It's not like they were good to watch either . . . they played the most sterile and boring brand of rugby in the entire tournament. Even the Rebels showed more spark and flair than the dull and predictable Stompies.

The Hapless Stompies should set themselves the goal of finishing outside the bottom 5 this season. That would be a realistic target for them . . . except looking at their rather weak squad this season, that might be a bit beyond them.

Expect the Sharks to carry the SA flag once again.

There's also Robert Du Preez at flyhalf and Senatla isn't available until late in the competition.
Pat Howard has been tearing up for Munster, he needs to play for the Stormers this season otherwise he'll likely leave SA.

Yep watched Howard playing for Munster, they love him there.....came off the bench and made an impact, a good couple of breaks, beating defenders at will.

Coetzee is too stupid to play him

Not all teams have the balance that a team needs.   The Chiefs fir instance last year became unsettled because of deficiencies among their forwards - so their top bacjline functioning was not producing adequate results.
On whe whole over the past three years the teams the best-blanced teams won the competition.   In essence the Crusaders really are the top team in New Zealand - because  because they no doubt are the best balanced team in that conference.
There can be no disputing the fact that the NZ conference has the best half back pairs in the competition, but are they going to win crucial games - I am not so sure of that - r. e will have to see what happens this year.

I believe there has been some changes in approach to the game evident in the recent CC series and dinosaurs like Jake White has been shown the door.
In essence I think the SA teams - other than the Cheetahs who has been raided by other franchises - as well as foreign clubs - will  perform better this year than they did last year.    The Bulls got some key new players and the development of Pollard will add value to their backline.   The Stormers will definitely be stronger - they have some very good young backline players coming through and itwould be interesting to see how they develop.
On the whole I am looking forward to the series and w will have to see how the various franchises progress.

Stormers will be better because they now have more depth along with the return of Etzebeth. Also Gert Smal who has done wonders for that club has pushed for a more balanced game plan, but one must consider that the Currie Cup isn't as difficult as Super Rugby and some of the more younger players may not excel as they did in the Currie Cup. I'm expecting the Stormers to struggle on tour if anywhere, I think that if injuries stray away from Etzebeth, Vermeulen and Burger they will have a good season.

 @mike,
I also expect the SA teams to perform better than last year, it's quite dificult to perform worst.
Stormers and Bulls should improve, they are obligated to after the disastrous last year's campaign. The battle for the forwards domination btwin them and the Sharks and even the Lions in the SA conference will be crucial, as always, and seems very disputed a priori. I wouldn't dare to give a prediction on this.
But IMO the Bulls and Sharks have a head start towards winning the conference. They have a more balanced team with good pairs of halves (test level) and more experienced backlines.

The NZ conf will be also very interesting.
Chiefs and Hurricanes have, with Tahs, the best baklines of the comp. The Chiefs have improved huge way with the incorporation of SBW, Hosea Gear and the new big center Seta Tamanivalu.
Pulu, Cruden, SBW, Tamanivalu, Gear, Nanai-Williams and Ngatai/McKenzie it's a hell of a backline.
But their succes will depend on how the pack works. If they fail like last year they will be a very dangerous team but no more. But if they perform like 2-3 years ago they can aspire to everything.
Last year they missed Ben Afeaki in the front row and they had some inexperienced players like Fitzerald, Liam Squire and both hookers Harris and Marshall. All of them have aquired this experience and some of them proved they are quality SR players like both hookers (Harris is injured for the moment) and Squire, a very complete nº8. If we sum the coming back of Afeaki and Hika Elliot we have a quite better pack and a very competitive team.

But as you said, also IMO the more balanced team remains the Saders. They have the best forward pack of the comp by far, the best depth in the playmaking with Carter, Slade, Taylor, Dagg and even Crotty and some good finishers, specially Nadolo.
Their problem is, as every year, that they have to incorporate their AB pack slowly. This season Read and S. Whitelock have some mini-sabbatical and won't play till round 5. Nadolo and Ellis are playing in japan and won't play till the same round (the injury of Heinz is a big problem because of this).
By the time they assemble the team they'll be reaching mid-season and they'll probably have lost some crucial points indispensable to top the table, as they did last seasons. Nowadays the home advantage in a final is crucial.
Coming June the Saders have been the best team but they are not able to surpass this home advantage.
Another crucial issue for the saders will be the performance of Freuan. If he gets the form he had 2-3 years ago they can be unstopable coming June.

ABasque, good summary.
I said a few weeks ago that I think the Crusaders are the team to beat and I agree with you that Robbie Fruean's form is crucial. I think they have enough cover for Sam Whitelock if Dominic Bird and Luke Romano stay fit and I'm guessing Richie McCaw is going to play at #8 to cover Kieran Read while he's resting. They'll definitely miss Nemani Nadolo though and the likes of Johnny McNicholl and Kieron Fonotia are pretty ordinary replacements for the big guy.
Sounds like the Chiefs will be relying quite heavily on Sunni Bill but I believe he wants to be part of the NZ Olympic Sevens team so not sure how the Chiefs will cope without him while he's gone. Liam Squire looks a great prospect and it's time for Sam Cane to finally step up to the plate because he was a bit disappointing last season.
What's the news on Ardie Savea? Are you expecting him to be a regular this season or will he get limited game time like last year?

 @rooi,

agreed about Cane, he had a dissapointing campaign last year (coming from injury and injured again at the end of the SR season) and needs to step up, Todd is there blowing his back for being McCaw's back up at the AB.

Ardie Savea is coming from surgery and he's in a race for being fit for the first rounds though is expected to miss at least the first match. Here you have news from Dec the 4th, I couldn't find something more updated:

http://superxv.com/44001/1/hurricanes-duo-in-a-race-for-super-rugby-openers#.VMaA_y6MtaQ

But once he's fit he'll be a regular and will have plenty of gametime (worthy for Fantasy). Jack Lam and Lavave left the team and the other only openside is Manawatu's Callum Gibbs. He had an outstanding ITM cup and is a very good prospect but is not yet expected even on the bench. But he can be a starter in those opening rounds if Savea is not fit, someone worthy to watch.
The most probable canes' backrow is:
6. B. Shields  7. A. Savea  8. V. Vito,
with B. Thomson (who made the most of the time he played last year) on the bench

Sorry - but even though I called the Crusaders the best all round team - I do not agree with your assessment that they have the best forward pack of the comp by far.   They have a good pack in New Zealand terms - but that does not make them the best in Super 15.    There are at most three standout players in the pack, the rest are not all that good.   Asa unit they are th best in New Zealand - but they struggle against other teams.

  @mike,

tell me a team that can match the likes of O. Franks, W. Crockett, J. Moody (all AB) and N. Laulala (the next in line) at props. There's no one.

Tell me a team that can match the likes of S. Whitelock, L. Romano and D. Bird (all AB). There's no one.

Tell me a team that can match the likes of M. Todd, R. McCaw, K. Read, (all AB), J. Taufua (next in line) and L. Whitelock. There's no one. Stormers are the nearest and have a very good depth with Vermeulen, Carr, Kolisi, Burger (even if he's past his best and now doesn't produce anything relevant), Elstadt and Rhodes. But IMO saders have more quality.

The only spot where the saders can be surpassed is the Hooker. But Ged Robinson, B. Funell and C. Taylor form a quite good trio.
And if C. Taylor can mantain at SR level his performances of the last ITM cup, very few teams would better this Hooker's trio.

The best forward pack by far

 Sorry ABF
But Crocket as a prop is a joke and O Franks not much better - they normally compete with each other as to who gives away more scrum penalties.   Would not have them in any team bar perhaps the Cheetahs as props.   As to hookers - the NZ hookers are not setting the norm for good hookers - like Ged Robinson though.
The three top forwards in the Crusaders team are Sam Whitelock, Read and McCaw - certainly one of the greats ever, but s he still on that level?    McCaw is near the end of his career - he is gradually, but progressively getting poorer.    NZ fans do not want to  realize that he is getting worse by the season.   I am not sure how he will be performing this year - but he is not in my category of top fantasy selections anymore.   .

 Sunni or Shiite Bill
Has he lost his name Money Bill forever?    He will have to continue his career in Japan - will struggle to get work permits in France and England and may even have problems is Japan.  The latter does not like ISIS any better - they do not like severed Japanese heads as trophies.
What will Charlie Hebdo do with that one - put his turban in the form of a rugby ball?   .    In any event the NH rugby crowd and their financial backers are a conservative lot and Islamists  are not at this stage really the most acceptable people around.    Maybe the Arabs will buy out a rugby team and be loose with their money - so Money Bill will be back at the trough
I am losing it - Emirates have taken over the sponsorship of the Lions - very generous sponsor that one.   So Sunni Bill will be acceptable for them, Shiite Bill not so.

Typical Moffie behaviour. He finds what he thinks is a typo of mine so he gets all petty, patronising and sneering . . . only to find out my use of "Sunni" as opposed to "Sonny" was actually intentional so as to make a small joke . . . a joke that flew right over the criss-cross lobotomy scars of Moffie's flat sloping forehead.

So, once he's made a gigantic fool of himself and his stupid face is all covered in egg, is he man enough to admit it and take one on the chin? No, he slinks off like a craven coward hoping that no-one will notice or at the very least his Servile Gimps can make enough of a smokescreen so it will all blow away.

We saw the same thing a week or so ago when Moffie put up a global warming graph that was created by a pair of discredited buffoons. To make it even funnier, this was shortly after Moffie was lecturing to someone that he was this self-appointed expert when it came to "macro-statistical" efforts as he pompously called them and he was suggesting that people "do their homework" before contributing to the thread.

So, when Moffie's sources were exposed as charlatans who were the laughing stock of the internet, what did Moffie do? Did he man up and admit his hilarious gaffe and his own lack of homework or statistical understanding (after all his conceited posturing and pontificating)? No, he slunk away and pretended it hadn't happened as he desperately tried to change the subject to ice melting or some other topic he clearly knows nothing about.

LMAO!

What a weak little character our Moffie is!

  @mike,

you didn't name any team with better props, nor any team with better locks, nor any team with better backrowers.

"Crocket as a prop is a joke and O Franks not much better"

O. Franks is the best tighthead in the world. Both Crockett and him managed to win 92% of the scrums with own throw-in at test level last season, the best record. They are not only some of the best scrumagers in the world they also move around the park and partcipate in the overall game, unlike the argies or the bok props who btwin scrum and scrum have the same effect on the game as if they were replaced by cows grazing on the field, being the bok Jannie du Plessis a very good example of it.

"Would not have them in any team bar perhaps the Cheetahs as props"

let see some last season scrum stats:
Against Stormers:
Saders: 8 won, 1 lost (88.9%) ; Stormers: 5 won, 2 lost (71.4%)
Agaist Lions at Ellis:
Saders: 11 won, 2 lost (84.6%)     Lions: 5 won, 0 lost (100.0%)
Agaist Sharks:
Saders: 5 won, 1 lost (83.3%)     Sharks: 2 won, 3 lost (40.0%)
Against Sharks semis:
Saders: 7 won, 0 lost (100.0%)     Sharks: 7 won, 1 lost (87.5%)

And 2013 season's:
Bulls:
Saders: 5 won, 0 lost (100.0%)     Bulls: 4 won, 2 lost (66.7%)
Agaist Stormers at Newlands:
Saders:5 won, 0 lost (100.0%)    Stormers: 4 won, 2 lost (66.7%)
Agaist Sharks at Durban:
Saders:  6 won, 1 lost (85.7%)     Sharks:  5 won, 0 lost (100.0%

The saders were clearly better at scrums than the best SA teams. But to have it more clear, the saders won 47  and lost 5 of their own scrums (90.4%.), while winning 10 against throw-in.
And, this is only referred to scrums. As said before there is no possible comparison when talking about the general play around the field. So, again, mike, what team has better props?

 @Mr Been,

"Bwahahahahaha ou ab ass doesnt realsie the abs scrum was very pap and England earned a penalty try against these hapless okas!"

firstly, how old are you? 8 or 10?
We are talking about the saders, nor O. Franks, nor Crockett, nor Moody were on the field. When that scrum happened Faumuina and B. Franks were the props on the field, so WTF are you talking about?
You are so chidish that you assesses players for just one play (that one that convenes to you, for sure) and you bring this play day after day.  You are a f*cking soccer hooligan.
And for your information, that penalty try was a gift given by Owens, the English front row poped up clearly first and the AB scrum barely went backwards.

"We aere very happy with our young guys Kebble, Malherbe and the redhead!"

I wasn't asking if you are happy, I asked for a team that has better props than the saders  and this trio is clearly not fit to lick their boots.
Kebble? who's that guy'? Oh yeah, the very experienced prop with 145 minutes of SR.

"Bwahahahahaha the stormers have Etzebeth, Kleyn and Ruan Botha all as good if not better. "

again, how old are you?
Klein and Botha? really? Klein played 103 minutes of SR while Botha played 17 matches and you are comparing them to test level locks? c'mon you soccer hooligan........

"Oh pleeease we have Carr, Vermuelen, Burger, Rhodes, Elstadt and Kolisi etc. "

that's what I was saying: "Stormers are the nearest and have a very good depth with Vermeulen, Carr, Kolisi, Burger (even if he's past his best and now doesn't produce anything relevant), Elstadt and Rhodes. But IMO saders have more quality."
don't you know reading? or do you have problems to retain?

" just remember the Sharks beat you with 13 men at christchurch."

Again assessing from just one asset, one match in this case, like a 10 yo child.
I remember you that this same team demolished the 15-men Sharks when it counts, in the semis.
I can remeber you also that this same saders team is the one that have beaten the Drizzlers 13 of the last 15 times they have played.
but , yeah,........... the bent refs and the same old excuse as ever........... I know, I know
