Amla has resigned with immediate effect as captain and will stay on playing for the team. AB as Vice - Captain will take over the captaincy.
All nice words at the press conference - but I think Amla could not take the pressure and decided to quite as captain, while continu ing to play.
He was initially pressurized to accept the captaincy and the SARU crowd present could hardly be described as looking comfortable.

Caught a bit of the press conference. It always boggles why these things.happen mid series so often. Couldn't he wait another two or three weeks?
While I think AB is probably one of the best, if not the best sportsman SA has produced, i dont think he is a test captain. I'm dubious about his cricketing brain and his leadership skills. Naturally the entire team, indeed the whole nation have great respect for him, but i guess we'll have too see how tactically sound he is. He's not lacking test experience, that's for sure.
Maybe Amla was a little mild-mannered for the job.

There is one aspect in what Amla said - and that is that he believes there is someone more capable to do the job. I think that Amla said before his appointment he does not want the job. He was then forced into the captaincy by SA Cricket.
Lets face facts - Amla did not have a good year as captain - his performances with the bat were not up to standard - bar for the last test - when he clearly decided beforehand that he was going to resign and that reduced the pressure on him.
Should never have been made captain - it had a negative impact on his batting performances,

Mike as we both said at the time Amla didnt want the job. He was actually coerced into it for transformation (racist) reasons.Fact is both Amla and the proteas will be better off. From all accounts AB is a natural leader and his form doesnt suffer from the captaincy.
I also think ou plumpie got all upset when Amla's captaincy was being criticised.
No plumpie its not just that Amla is mild mannered its he is not a leader and doesnt like the job.
Mike and Beeno getting it right plumpie flunking out as usual Bwahahhahahahahaha

Plum is right about the timing though. There is one more test...it would have been better if he relied more on AB for that test, and called it quits after that.
As for the Pervert's comments...a few days ago he was saying Amla's technique had deteriorated....now it's all the captaincy. The usual obvious bs.

Moz it all shows how much Amla dislikes the job. I really think its positive move. At a team gathering it was noted by the commentators that it was AB doing the talking an d motivation.Amla earns respect for stepping down. Lets just hope his batting flowers again. It was noteworty he was dropped three times - luck was with him . Hopefully the time in the middle will have given him back his feel and confidence.

Mozart is always talking rubbish - it is routine with him. I said that the captaincy is affecting his performance - but his batting problems also stemmed from the technical problems he encountered early in his career and that he will have to sort it out since it surfaced again in recent matches,
However, I suppose that went straight over the flat-earth mind of Mozart.

Umm Beenis, i said myself I am not best pleased with Amla as captain. The only thing I added was that I don't see AB as a test skipper, and thus there is nobody else who really springs to mind. I dunno maybe you wanna go and have a look at his numbers in the formats he has captained and report back? My guess is that he has a worse win/loss ration than Smith. But it's just a guess.
And no, I didn't get "angry" at Mike for criticizing Amla as captain or as a batsman. Mike makes valid points and doesn't resort to insults when I disagree with him respectfully. And actually, I agree with Mike in that Amla's technique needs fixing. That's what a forum is for...discussion! And if everyone agrees then what is the point of discussing anything?
As for Morkel...Mike Atherton himself said this morning, after Morkel.had Bowled about 4 overs...that he had bowled three balls where he wanted to. Everyone is concerned about our batting but i tell you we have serious issues in the bowling department. On a morning when England is nervous as hell, you get a lucky knick down the leg side and bag the skipper, and then bowl way to many sighters. They should have been making them play at every single ball. Kepler, just before tea also said he wished Morkel could start they way he finishes. It takes him 15-20 overs to find his line and that is unacceptable. On a fifth day pitch, with humidity and cloud cover the Protea's bowling ineptitude was massed by very favorable conditions. Steyn ans Philander better come back back quick. If we are so badly searching for all rounders, then why is Parnell not in the mix? My team would be, in batting order...
Elgar
Rossouw
Amla
AB
Faf/Bavuma
De Cock
Parnel
Morris
(Next best all form rounder available)
Philander
Steyn
No.9 Could be a spinning or seaming all rounder depending on what's required.
There you have a team that bats very deep and could have either a) 5 seamers and a part time spinner or b) 4 seamers, 1 full time spinner and 1 part time spinner.
At the moment our tail is very long and we have too few bowling options.
Also, I think we have better options at 5. But I'm happy to give Bavuma more time or have a bit more patience with Faf. Currently, I'm thinking Bavuma over Faf.

plumpie what exactly has ou philander done in recent times?Morris and Rabada deserve another shot. Morris wa unlucky not to pick up more wickets - took two brilliant catches and made runs.
4 man seam attack and keep Pied. Who to drop is the question.
We cant have Steyn in and only three seamers . If he breaks down then what.
Could De Kock open? AB doesnt want the gloves. Drop Van Zyl?

Beenis, Philander is an accurate new ball seamer who can hold a bat well. Him and Steyn bowl well together. Their styles could compliment each other well. Yes, Morris deserves another shot, hence he is in my team. I watched Parnell hit a lovely 100 at Wanderers recently and he offers the usual left handed bowling conundrum, swining it in to right handers from over the wicket and brining LBW into play.
There you have 4 very good seamers, three of which can bat too.
I'd drop Piedt for a spinning all-rounder if a spinner was needed and if not then I'd go for a seaming all rounder. Piedt can't bat for shyte, and for me, unless you are Warne, Murli or Mushtaq, you must be able to hold bat. Maybe even a batting all rounder who can bowl at 130'ish. Elgar would be the part-timer.
There's your answer.

Hashim Amla decided to quit the captaincy because his batting suffered. In other words he did what's best for the team and for that reason I think he deserves the utmost respect. I don't believe he was a poor captain as he's on field decisions were on the money. It's unfortunate that there'll be those who refuse to understand that he took control over a young team in transition who had huge boots to fill with the retirement of Smith, JK and Boucher. He also had to suffer the loss of his main strike bowler(Dale Steyn) in both the Indian and English series.
07 Jan 2016, 08:39#12
Hats off to the muslim. He knew he was a poor captain and did the right thing by stepping down. High time too.
He shouldn't have been selected as captain to begin with. We all saw how he struggled with on field decisions. In fact ... did he ever make any decent decisions or was he merely winging it??
Now if we could only convince this non contributing chump to return to domestic cricket ... find some form. Carrying him for so long is surely the silliest thing I've ever seen.
I guess that's what one does with quotas. Select them and hold your breath for how ever long it'll takes him to find his acorn.
Graeme Smith retired from test cricket more than a year ago. Why is everyone still going one about him. He is past tense and has been for some time now. Same goes for Kallis.
I hope we won't be seeing any additional sob stories of how we miss Gary Kirsten and the gaping hole he left ... MORE THAN A DECADE AGO.
Give me a break.
We should have prepared for the inevitable ... but as usual ... with our losers mentality ... we wait till the wheels fall off and then bring in the usual crisis management ... always looking to the past ... blaming those players that left as the sole reason for our awful state of affairs.
Laughable.

ou denny getting it wrong again. What planet are you on denny. Amlas captaincy was questioned a number of times and his decision baffled the commentary team. No I think he did the right thing as he was not a good captain, didnt like the job and it appeared to effect hsi batting.
Good luck to AB.
07 Jan 2016, 09:08#14
AB seems highly demotivated. What's the cause of this?
The passionate joyful chap I saw a few years ago seems to have changed to what now looks like one hating his position in the team.
He doesn't want to be there.
How come?
Is it really a good idea to keep a person on that's so unhappy?

Not sure if you guys remember...
Amla was made captain of the Dolphins after a wonferful prior season. I think he scored 4 1st class hundreds the year before.
Anyway, he had a torrid run as Dolphins captain. I think he was even dropped from the side for a few games.
he let the captaincy go and cited thhat it effected his batting.
...I was therefore shocked when he accepted the Protea captaincy.
Lets hope he returns to his glory days.

"...I was therefore shocked when he accepted the Protea captaincy."
You can bet your bottom dollar that Haroon Lorgat coerced Amla after he twice refused the Protea captaincy. The man is a snake. He also wrecked what any chance there was for the Proteas to win the WC after the pressure he put on the Protea management to select Philander instead of the in form Kyle Abbott. Hashim Amla did a good a job as any in my opinion under difficult circumstances, however, there is no doubt it affected his batting. His resignation should be seen as a act of dignity.

Not 100% correct.
He came good at the Dolphins and was then selected in the National side, on the back of his performances for the Dolphins. He then failed for the Proteas and was dropped. He then went back to the Dolphins and relinquished the captaincy to get back in the national side.
These were his initial innings in 2004/5:Nov 2004, Eden Gardens, v India - 24 and 2, batting at no 5Dec 2004, Kingsmead Durban v England - 1 and 0, batting at no 6 (first innings and 7 (second innings). Jan 2005, Newlands v England -25 (batting at 6) and 10 (batting at 7)
He was then dropped from the Proteas side for the 2005/ 6 series against Zim, WI and both the series against Australia (in Aus and SA) at the end of 2005 and early 2006.
He was only recalled for the second test of the 2006 series against NZ in SA. He made 149 in the first innings. SA only batted once. He also made 56 and 28 in the third test, batting at no 3. His next 50 came only 11 innings after his first. In between the 56 v NZ in May 2006 and his 63 against India at Newlands in Jan 2007, he recorded scores of the 28 against NZ, 19, 2, 40 and 8 against Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka, 0, 17, and 0 against India in SA. it was only after his next 50, when he scored 63 against India at Newlands, that he really took off.
You are correct in saying that he relinquished the Dolphins captaincy but he wasn't dropped by the Dolphins. He was dropped by the Proteas. He also did not relinquish the captaincy of the Dolphins because it affected his batting. He did it so that he could free himself up in order to concentrate on his batting alone. Aren't you thinking of his brother Ahmed?

Did you read what you wrote above:-
"He also did not relinquish the captaincy of the Dolphins because it affected his batting. He did it so that he could free himself up in order to concentrate on his batting alone."
Two contradictory statements in two following sentences.
The fact is that the captaincy did affect his batting and that he wanted to concentrate on that aspect of the game. That is why he quit as captain at that stage and the same applies in the present case.
