"Another joke - the worst flyhalf I have ever seen play - with poor and aimless out of hand kicking and even Meyer dropped him from the team - once in 2012 and twice in 2014. He offered nothing at flyhalf since he virtually never attacked the gain line and his defense was putrid at best. As many as the games he won for the Springboks - so many he lost through poor flyhalf play."
So, he lost as many games as he won? Well, he has a 63% record. So I'd love to see how you arrived at 50%. Furthermore, his tackle stats are well over 80%. Better than Carter, better than a lot of chumps like Lambie and Goosen. He never attacked the gainline, but has more assists than the Lambie and other media darlings and has a higher try-per-test record than Butch, Pretorius, Pollard, Lambie, De Beer, Honiball, Goosen et al. His teams tend to be very effective try scorers. So, how did you arrive at your conclusion? You say he has "loads of aimless kicks", but Pakie debunked you (not that it required someone going that far, but he did lay a sledgehammer to your argument.
Another Joke
His tackle stats is a lie
And your source is?
I am tired of defending Morne... done it for years now
He has been done a disservice by many a Springbok supporter or anti Bulls fan...… makes me sick actually
What a true great …… his record speaks for itself..
ESPN stats in tests in which Steyn played.
Look at two matches Morne played in - the 2013 AB match in Johannesburg and the Perth disaster in 2014 - his last starting test under Meyer. He was always a defense liability and that remains a fact. Now start with your endless excuses - but facts are facts.
Reproduce his career stats from a credible source or produce his stats from a large enough sample of games. The fact is you have no idea what his career tackling stats are and are just lying….again.
What career shots dolt? Fact is Meyer dropped Steyn three times because he was useless and the two matches I refereed to was conclusive . .
Are you too lazy to check those to sets of stats - liar?
You see Mike.... this is where you lose a lot of credibility
Morne Steyn, amongst other accomplishments, achieved the following
U21 World Cup
Currie Cup x 2
Super Rugby x 3
Tri Nations x 1
French Top 14
British Lions x 2
Second highest points scorer in the history of Springbok rugby
Beaten the All Blacks 4 times, and scored 139 points against them, a South African record
Most points ever scored in one match against the All Blacks.... 31
156 penalties, most in history by a Springbok player
Now here is why you lose so much credibility Mike..... because with all those incredible career stats listed above..... you want to judge him on 2 games...… yes..... 2 games
Pathetic
The 2013 All Black test, Morné never missed an assignment on defence. He had 5 misses and two successful try saving tackles on scramble defence. In short, he chased everything and did all he could to to cover for the failed tackles of his colleagues. Lügnerin is being very deceptive here.
As for 2014 in Aus. He wasn't at his best, but the Wallabies caused havoc targeting spaces between 10 an 12 and isolating 13. They weren't targeting defenders, but moving them around. Morné had two genuinely bad tackle attempts, both on Folau coming into the line between 10 and 12. As for the rest, not a reflection on his ability. Again, Lügnerin is being deceptive.
Once a liar, always a liar.
in 2013 Morne missed two tackles that led to tries and one which did not - and he never made a single try-saving tackle in that game.
The famous Morne had two things that were major negatives - he was regularly targetted for attack since his defense was seriously defective. The second one was since he never attacked the gain line and stood way to deep in the pocket - the opposition defenders ignored him and in case he passed the ball the recipient was under serious pressure from, a number of defenders.
His out-of-hand kicking was seriously defective and was called BS by commentators in at least one game.
.
"in 2013 Morne missed two tackles that led to tries and one which did not - and he never made a single try-saving tackle in that game."
"His out-of-hand kicking was seriously defective and was called BS by commentators in at least one game "
What a joke
I guess with a record like his, he should never have worn the Springbok jersey.... I mean.... he was clearly just a very mediocre player..... despite all his personal and Springbok records listed above
Fucking hilarious
If my life was literally on the line...…. there is only one man I would call to take that kick.... and no.... I genuinely would not even consider Carter..... that is how much I rate Morne.
Nobody could ever fathom what he must have gone through.... taking a series deciding penalty, to determine a once in 12 year series win.... not once.... but twice...… and the first time he did it,, it was only in his 2nd test as a Springbok.
And that was not his only notable achievements..... as was said here before, in many ways, we really did not deserve him.
You are delusional Mike
I have had this same argument with Saffex before as well.... so no more
No tries were conceded because of Morné you liar. Here are the time stamps for the 2013 encounter:
Time Stamps
00:26 - Dagg runs at Jannie and beats him. Steyn covers across and grabs him. Dagg gets the offload to 14.
10:30 - Morné brings down Retallick.
10:56 - New Zealand breakout down the touchline for a try. Read beats Alberts takes contact from Habana but slips an offload to 14 who steps inside Eben and darts for the try line; Morné cuts across field but can only manage to clasp his shirt which isn't enough to stop him from behind.
24:41 - 14 charges into Morné who brings him to ground
25:19 - Nonu steps inside Morné into Jean. Morné got hands on him from behind.
25:30 - New Zealand on Bok tryline, Morné solitary defender on left of ruck; Retallick, Messam and McCaw steadily drive him back and score try number two.
40:43 - Vermuelen is beaten by Retallick, Morné grabs his upper body and takes him down.
53:58 - Savea breaks a Le Roux tackle down the touchline, Morné pursues and grab him from behind taking his legs whilst Steenkamp thumps his upper body; both bring him to ground a couple of feet in front of the tryline preventing a certain try.
60:17 - 22 cuts past Jean and through a gap, Morné unable to get a grip on Beauden as he pulls to JJ and breaks out for a try.
79:37 - New Zealand turnover, breakout down the touchline through Dagg. He pass inside hitting 23 with a miss-pass. Morné dives and shackles him from behind bringing him to ground and interrupting an attempted pass to McCaw, thus preventing a certain try.
The Smitjh try could have been prevented despite the flop by Alberts if Morne was even a half decent defender. In the case of the Barrett try Morne slapped him on his back wishing him well on the way to score the try. You can spin as much as you like - fact is Morne's defense was always shit poor.
In the case of the Perth test he was worse than poor - he was a rank disaster. Even the deadly stupid Meyer gave up on him after that disaster..
Rubbish Alberts was beaten for pace, nobody ever claimed he was a pace merchant. Morne missed the player while coming across at pace in cover defence…..it happens more often than not.
The Barrett try occurred because Jean rushed up….Barrett was never Steyns assignment, it was a last ditch tackle attempt…no fault of Morne’s.
Another tissue of lies.
Another tissue is misrepresentation. In any event the defense of Morne was always poor and as useless he was in igniting backline play so useless was he in defense. Morne was by some distance the worst flyhalf we had since 2000.
No it’s a precise representation.
Precise according to the two biggest liars ever on site. So lets get this straight - Barrett ran past Morne less than 2 meters from him. Any defender would have gone low in a tackle attempt - all Morne did was slap him on his back and my description is 100% accurate. He really helped Barrett along when scoring that try. Morne on that day made 7 tackles and missed 4. In his next test in Perth he made 8 tackles and missed 7.
Piss brain tried to justify the disastrous penalty line kick that let to the Aussie winning try and for the most part you did the same. until it was repeatedly pointed out to you that it really was a disastrous kick. Normal in the case of Morne = his out of hand kicking was atrocious.. In 9 tests in 2013 and 2014 he missed finding touch with 7 penalties.
Actually he missed touch on the penalty, it’s the one mistake I can ever recall off his boot. Nonetheless the Boks should not have conceded the try….he was only culpable for the kick.
And Morne’s next test after the Ellis Park test was against Wales. If you can’t even get the fixtures right, why would the stats be accurate?
