The Cheetahs were fair set to win.....and lost a stunner. They played dumb rugby and lost their bottle when Goosen went off. But it all came from an amazingly forward pass in the Highlanders first try. Remember JdV's RWC drift pass which I thought was marginally okay. This damn thing went forward right out of hand and was accepted three strides ahead of where it was passed.

Sheer incompetence by the Jonker and his touchies. Call that back for a scrum and you have a different game.

I'll remember this game for Highlander brilliance, Highlander thuggery, the officials' blunder and Goosen's brilliant run.....something we may never have seen from a South African flyhalf.

that try was very forward, but ive lost count of the number of tries that have gone forward like that and not been picked up by refs.
but IMO goosen knocked on the ball before picking it up and scoring his try, so while 2 wrongs dont make a right, it does square up the ledger.

I thought Goosen was really brilliant and I hope the injury does not eliminate him from the English tests coming up.    He was selected for the Junior WC - but I am not sure whether he would play for them or for the Springboks if he is fit to play.

My rating of fly halfs is as follows:-

1.     Goosen

2      Grant

3     Lambie (prefer him as full back)

4     Jantjies

5.     Meyer

I wonder what happened to Jonker - he used to be a good referee - but recently he and the touch judges made ridiculous mistakes - and he is now on par with the New Zealand referees.

To me it seemed as if Marius was trying to recover his reputation as an impartial referee after last week's blunder and by doing so he overcompensated and allowed the Highlanders to get away with murder. Now thats just what Lyndon Brey and his band of cronies wanted, for Marius to be lenient toward the Highlanders. After last week's performance, Marius should have sat this one out and Mark Lawrence should have blown this game.

Looks like Marius has a bad reputation that he wont be able to shake off and should not be given the whistle for games involving SA teams vs Anzac teams, period!!

and on that farm he had some saffa fans, E I E I O

with a kiwi ref here and a saffa ref there

here a ref, there a ref,

everywhere a ref ref

old mcdonald had a farm, E I E I O

LMAO, cmon dudes, u know thats funny, :D

jonker was useless, but highlanders had heaps of terrible calls go against them as well and no one can feel more shafted then brumbies fans.
jonker has had two crap games, but before that he was a good ref and he is human, so like the players he has his bad and good days and as mentioned the brumbies were the most hard done by with jonkers performance as of late, highlanders were deserved winners and not cos of the ref, cos while jonker was sh!t, at least he was consistently sh!t.

Green you are certainly on the right track. It works like this bulle ref jonkers favours bulle as he always does. To cover  his racks he is ultra fair to highlanders. How many punches can a nz player throw before being banned. The rules say 1. Now ou bonkers gets told by his touch judge to give a red against highlander oak . bonkers ignores this and gives a yellow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. Imagine that happening to a SA player in nz!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Watch the review ban that highlander loosie for weeks.

This was possibly the unluckiest loss ever. Sias is normally a very reliable kicker. He missed three including one in front!!!!

Nauseating stuff.

ultra fair??? he gave goosen a try when it was a knock on. and when the scores were leveled at 30 all, he penalised ben smith for obstruction, when the reality was he was going for the ball that jared hoeata passed into no mans land, ellison gets to the ball first and jonker awards a penalty which gives the cheetahs the lead.

ive found jonker to be a good ref most of the times, the last two weeks are an exception, but this talk about him favouring highlanders is rubbish, he made bad calls against both team, but was still consistent.

bottomline, highlanders derserved their victory, and the brumbies can feel the most cheated of all teams to tour SA.

So why did bonkers not give the highlander a red as recommended by the touch judge? What rule allowed him to not give a red?

like i said jonker had a sh!t match but thats not the first striking charge to go without a red card this year, but he did gift the cheetahs 10pts and while the highlanders first try was forward, all officials were behind and unable to see it.

im surprised the highlanders won despite the 10pts advantage that jonker gifted the cheetahs.

Further the highlanders cant be said to be deserved winners. The Cheetahs dominated for longer than the highlanders.

The highlanders win was as a consequence of a fluffed kick in front of the posts by a usually very relaible goal kicker. Talk about incredible luck!!!!

Please sasuk keep it real!

Problem though with Ceetahas is tha their bench is not up to scratch. Hence their large number of losses by 7 points or less. The Kaplan mistake sunk then last week and now this. Very tough on gallant Cheetahs.

so the cheetahs bench and sias miss kick is jonkers fault as well???

look at the stats of all the games, the dominant team dosent always win, just ask the brumbies. luck was an issue, but the rightful winner is the team who wins, and the cheetahs disgusting mid 2nd half defense is why the cheetahs lost, if u cant put away a team with that lead gifted with 10pts from the ref, then u got no excuses when u lose, best team won on the day.

and seeing as how ur barracking for the cheetahs and im cheering for the highlanders, it was game set and match to me before we even started blogging.

The rule that allowed Jonker not to give a red card is one of the most basic and clear rules in the rugby law book. The ref has the last say. The Assitant referees are just that. Assistants to the referee.

Assistant:

  1. A person who ranks below a senior person: "the managing director and her assistant".
  2. A person who helps in particular work: "a laboratory assistant".

He makes a recommendation to the referee and the referee makes the final decision. Even the TMO does not make a decision. For instance, he does not instruct the referee to award a try. He would advise the referee by saying: "You may award the try". Whenever a referee asks the TMO for clarity on an incident, and the TMO cannot give any clarity, the call goes back to the referee and the referee has to make the decision.

@beeno & green - definitely agree.

refs are biased and then cover their tracks by giving penalty(s) in inconsequential positions - be 'ultra-fair' when their team is not in favour.

The only way to take this away from the gaem is a video challenge type rule - eg cricket / tennis / NRL / NFL -we have the technology why do we need to put up with either 1. Human error 2. Blatant cheating by biased refs.

Tahs copped one or two decisions that gave the game to crusaders - eg lineout throw not straight followed by fwd pass that led to first try -

Limit the amount of challenges but this has to be the solution - cuase it will only get worse and unfortunately in a game of tit for tat the only winner is the cheats.... and Aust dont have enough officials to even up the odds & the kiwis and saffas seem to whinge louder...

Well windpomp oddly enough I do not have a rule book before me. I do note the commentators were saying a punch results in a red. Also other players have been red carded for punching?

However perhaps you could quote chapter and verse windpomp -  the floor is yours!

The commentators also reckon that "downward pressure" is required for a try to be scored. This is what the law says about that one:

22.1 GROUNDING THE BALL

There are two ways a player can ground the ball:
(a) Player touches the ground with the ball. A player grounds the ball by holding the ball and touching the ground with it, in in-goal. ‘Holding’ means holding in the hand or hands, or in the arm or arms. No downward pressure is required.

Go figure.

No, because there is no such law in the law book. The point I am trying to make is that, because the commentators say it is a red card, does not mean that it is in the law book, just like there is no law that there has to be downward pressure, despite the commentators saying that there has to be downward pressure.

windpomp use the index  look under foul play.

There has to be rules governing foulf play and some guidance thereto!

Anyhowthe proof of the pudding should be in the white card review. I say should becuase we have seen repeatedly how lightly down under oaks get off.

ou bonkers refused to listen to his touch judges. We shall see who was right.

You are either to bloody lazy to look it up, or you are plainly to dof to find the bloody laws. I have looked it up, because I have learned not to listen to commentators, to understand the laws of the game, long ago. Maybe you should download the laws and look them up once in a while, and then you might stop blaming the refs left right and centre like you normally do. That is why I know their is no such law that states that a player has to be red-carded for a punch. This is the law about throwing punches:

Law 10 Foul Play

10.4 DANGEROUS PLAY AND MISCONDUCT
(a) Punching or striking. A player must not strike an opponent with the fist or arm, including
the elbow, shoulder, head or knee(s).
Sanction: Penalty kick

This is what the laws has to say about yellow and red cards:

Law 10 Foul Play

10.5 SANCTIONS
(a) Any player who infringes any part of the Foul Play Law must be admonished, or cautioned
and temporarily suspended for a period of ten minutes’ playing time, or sent-off.
(b) A player who has been cautioned and temporarily suspended who then commits a second
cautionable offence within the Foul Play Law must be sent-off.
10.6 YELLOW AND RED CARDS
(a) When a player has been cautioned and temporarily suspended in an International match the
referee will show that player a yellow card.
(b) When a player has been sent off in an International match, the referee will show that player
a red card.
(c) For other matches the Match Organiser or Union having jurisdiction over the match may
decide upon the use of yellow and red cards.
10.7 PLAYER SENT OFF
A player who is sent-off takes no further part in the match.

Yes, the Cheetahs were robbed by bad decisions by a referee, yet the Stormers were favoured by bad decisions by a referee, why are these not mentioned?

The try  scored after a knock-on by Harris?  The blatantly NO TRY by Habana – also fruits of bad refereeing.  So in fairness, if the Cheetahs were to win if the ref was 100% then what would have been the outcome if the ref in the Stormer game was 100%.  We, the rugby fans love to look at things with one eye, seeing only what we want.

Oh, by the way school-master DOOS the dead composer – the spelling should be to your satisfaction – doos.

and temporarily suspended for a period of ten minutes’ playing time, or sent-off.
Windpomp, thanks for all the hard work and graciousness of your response! You were doing so well keeping that nasty streak under control!!

However I still have a problem. It seems to me the being sent off is equivalent to a red? If so then why given the left right combo wasn't the hurricanes players sent off for good. As I said lets see how many weeks he gets banned for. I see Butch got 4 weeks so he should get more?

Windpomp your comment that Bryce lawrence called it incorrectly both ways in the wc match against Oz lost you a heap of cred you need to up your game!!

Now your buddy in this matter,  the lunatic nogal, grasps at straws mentioning the Habana non try as his supreme example. Well nobody has said mistakes never occur the other way round!. Secondly this was a mistake given no official was close by and it needed a slow motion review to show what had happened. Very far from deliberate error and bias. This incident was difficult to pick up with the naked eye. Bwahahahaahahahhaha the straw bends and breaks

Still nobody can explain why the last years tri nations figure as mentioned by a former OZ coach could possibly be fair. Penalties to yellows. all blacks 43  penalties to 1 yellow, oz 7 to 1 and SA 6 to 1. This is an incredible set of figures and highlights the problem.

The outcry re the cheetahs brumbies match led to a review where the ref was shown to have erred. Unfortunately the result was not changed but at least more pressure came on to the refs to blow fairly.

The game needs widespread protest re rotten refs and as I said against all rotten refs where ever they are found. Hence my criticism of bonkers in the bulle/brumbies match. (Note how after the protest bonkers actually went so far in the other direction he favoured the highlanders! ) Fact is we have a couple of bad apples here but nothing on the scale of those bent refs down under  one of which has been dropped from the IRB elite ref panel dispite his being the best ref in nz  ref of the year!! How red thier faces must be at this one. Everyone knows the real reason. Hahahahahahhahaha plus their other leading light at the IRB has also got the boot.

So we shall continue to protest against bent refs dispite complaints by windpomp and lunatic that all is well and it cuts both ways.

Beeno1, I gather you have a comprehension problem, not so?  Read my post again!  I am quite with you regarding the incompetence of the referees in general and also the blindness of the AR (linesman) in many of these decisions.  Problem is though that we seem to only bleat when the error in judgement is against our favourite team.  In many cases the referee makes stupid blunders toward both sides and it does then seem that the side we support are being unjustly done-in my the referee.

We need to mention the pros and the cons in order to be a step above the referees whom we so easily criticise. Just to set the record straight, I am not agreeing with Geraldine or whatever his/her name is, although the windpomp thing still eludes me.  As far as I can recall a human being called a windpomp is because he does not produce perm.  Do you know the poster well enough to be able to apply a crude name to his medical condition?  If so then you are really in bad taste, worse than what is coming across by your uneducated bias posts.

Respect is something one earns and currently you are excelling in the opposite direction.

Blixem ou Beenbal, it took you long to come up with this one, but it was expected.

The term is .............OR SENT OFF. The crux is the little word OR, that you have highlighted. What is the problem? Do you not understand the word OR. It is only two letters FFS. You are correct in saying "sent off" is , the same means getting a red card, but itis not compulsary, hence the little word OR. Do you want me to make it even more clear than that.

If you understand that, then the rest of your piece of drivel is of no importance and does not warrant being read.

If you still do not understand why the ref was not wrong in not giving a red card, then tell me and I will try another way of explaining it to you.

all this talk abvout jonker favouring the cheeaths cos of his blunder in the brumbies bulls game is a little sad IMO.
jonker is a good ref, but had a shocker the last two weeks for sure, but to say he favoured the highlanders cos he didnt award a red card is ridiculous. i agree haskell should have been red carded, but are u seriously trying to tell me that all players who have striklied anothe player have been carded even when peanlised by the ref???
and please explain to me how a ref favours a particular team by, by giving them to yellow cards and letting them have a 21 point disadvantage with 20 mins to go. i believe in each to their own, but even u guys cant deny how silly it sounds to say that jonker favoured the highlanders.

the ref is a non-issue in the Cheetahs vs Highlanders game - the game was won and lost by the players. Unfortunately Sias lost the game for Cheetahs when he missed that penalty infront of the sticks - reminded me of Hastings missing a similar penalty against England in the 1991 RWC at the death. He wept after that game as you should!

What was hillarious for me was Mackintosh and Haskell trying to peep into Jonker's back pocket as he was struggling to pull the cards out trying to figure out what colour it was and then seeing the relieved look on both their faces - classic!

I have this to say about Jonker - he is a gentleman - and Jonkers if you blogg here as well, I raise my hat to you - you are a gentleman!
