RugbyAnother WP lock banned for steroids2015-02-03 07:30SHARE THISGerbrandt Grobler (Gallo Images)Related LinksCape Town - Western Province and Stormers lock Gerbrandt Grobler has received a two-year ban after testing positive for an anabolic steroid.

According to Netwerk24, the test was done last October during the Currie Cup.

When Grobler was informed of the result, he admitted his guilt and made a settlement agreement with the South African Institute for Drug Free Sport (SAIDS). He therefore gave up the right to have a hearing.

In recent press releases, WP Rugby cited "personal medical reasons" for why Grobler was not in action.

The Stormers play their final Super Rugby warm-up match against the Boland Cavaliers at Cape Town Stadium on Saturday, having already notched pre-season wins over the SWD Eagles (34-3) and the Cheetahs (39-31).

They start their Super Rugby campaign against the Bulls in Pretoria on February 14.

Another you say sharkbok - who is the other?Moenie Bull sh---t ou guppie bokkie!
What a pity as Etzebeth is out for 4 weeks and Carissa for 3. But we still have Ruan Botha, Jean Kleyn and of course Elstadt and Rhodes can play lock. What a dismal start to the season with this and the guys still out via injuries!!!
We could play a second string side against the Bulle!

Kiwi teams are counting on the Stormers to knock out the Bulls, sharks & a few other SA teams again this year. Keep up the good work boys, we do appreciate it.
But seriously, it is a long season with the RWC looming so better to have injuries earlier rather than later.

". . . who is the other?"

Pffffffffffffffhahahahahahahahaha!

There are none so blind as those who will not see!

What amazes me about the Hapless Stompies is not just the fact that they cheat by putting their players on these steroid programs, it's the fact that they cheat and they're still such a crap team!

 From another site:

Western Province hit by drug bombshell February 3 2015 at 09:35am
By Zelim Nel and Michael Doman Comment on this story

Cape Town - Western Province’s Currie Cup success last year has been tainted by a failed drugs test. Lock Gerbrandt Grobler addressed the team on Monday to confirm that he had failed a test for steroids last year.

(...)

Grobler, who turns 23 on Friday, missed the 2014 Super Rugby season with a broken ankle and made a late return to duty during the latter stages of the Currie Cup.

During this time he was randomly selected for testing.

Province beat the Lions 19-16 at Newlands in the decider, and Grobler came off the bench for the final 10 minutes of the match.

Disgraceful. WP should be stripped of the title and the 2014 CC should be awarded to the Lions.

I wonder what percentage of WP's trophies and titles were due to steroid abuse? I'm guessing the vast majority.

Well done Lions! The 2014 CC champs!

Funny stuff. So Grobler being caught in disgraceful doping made Maakniks miss all those kicks. But one wonders where the Sharks were in the CC final.

My guess is that the lad was struggling to bulk up. Weighed around the 112 kg mark and needed to get it up

According to the news posted above:

"It is believed that Grobler opted to use the banned substance with a view to speeding up his recovery."

This would mean that he took the steroids under medical advice. All the recoveries from injury are planned, followed and monitored by the team's medical staff.

That is a valid concern that you have raised ABasquefan.Surely one would expect a rugby union to also run tests for steroids themselves.  If it was found out by an independent 3rd party, then their could be others...
