Springboks are set to announce their new coach on Friday
South Africa — Allister Coetzee firms as new coach
IT’S been five months in the making, but at long last South African will have a new Springboks coach on Friday following the departure of Heyneke Meyer in December.
Allister Coetzee, who won a World Cup as Jake White’s assistant in 2007, appears to have won the job ahead of SARU’s general manager of high performance Rassie Erasmus.
But the details on who will assist Coetzee are less clear.
Despite signing a new two-year contract extension on Tuesday, there is growing momentum for Lions coach Johan Ackermann to be involved in the coaching setup.
Lions CEO Rudolf Straeuli left the door open for negotiations should the mother body decide to adopt the Australian model of appointing a franchise coach to assist the national boss, but said he had yet be approached.
“At the moment, Saru has not spoken to me about Johan but, much like players, we will not stand in the way,” Straeuli said.
“If Saru wants to talk to us about any of our coaches and players, we are open for such discussions, if it means a sharing option or if it’s an option that will help Ackermann grow…
“There’s an important Saru general meeting on Friday and we are looking to them to give us that guidance.
“That said, the dual-role system has worked well for Australia, with Cheika and Larkham.
“In the professional era, maybe it is a system that we will have to look at and, hopefully, one that will benefit both parties.”
Jake White and Allister Coetzee during the Springboks captain's run in 2007.However, Test rugby’s most capped referee Jonathan Kaplan said that the Springboks should have hired Ackermann as their coach.
“I would love to see Johan involved,” Kaplan said on The Dan Nicholl Show.
“He’s shown (with the Lions) that he can bring a team from ashes, playing a very special brand of rugby, challenging some of the Kiwi teams, and I think this year will be a standout year for them.
“He’s hit some of the right buttons along the way.
“It is a step up from provincial rugby to Test rugby, but he is a South African, he is an ex-Springbok, so from a culture perspective, he understands pretty well.
“I’ve seen what he can do with no name brands, so if he can work with established names, I’m sure he can build something really good.”

It is good for SA rugby that the Lions CEO is open to the idea of negotiating coach Ackermann's involvement in the Boks. It would be good for SA rugby if the national team takes priority, this is what NZ teams do and it works.
