After watching the games on the weekend I noticed something that has been reoccuring this season that I believe needs to be discussed, and that is the lineout, more specifically the throw in to the lineout.
From what I have seen in many lineouts this season (by all teams) is that the hooker is standing (ableit marginally so) more toward the opposition side when the throw is taken, I trust you all have noticed this a few times. I believe this gives an advantage to thetem throwing in, in that a) the momentum of the throw naturally goes toward his teams side, and b) although the throw appears to be in the middle (or even more toward the opposition side) at the 5m mark, its ends up noticably on the side of the team that has possession. This issue in particular proves a tricky issue for the ref as he sees the ball as being straight when it crosses the 5m mark and essentially "enters" the lineout.
Upon a brief reveiw of the rules the fact that the thrower is taking the throw from a position more toward the opposition, as opposed to being in the dead centre, he is actually "gaining ground" illegally and thus a scrum should be awarded. The questions I put to the forum are as follows:
- Does the fact that the hooker throwing from such a position give them an advantage?
- If so is it the responsibiility of the touch judge , ref or player make sure the throw in is taken from the corect position?
I may be being far to critical regarding this issue, just sometimes seeing the ball drift to the side of the team who has possession seems to be and issue that lineout jumpers are also have a problem with, how many times have we heard the defending team's jumpers shout at the touch judge that the throw in was skew. I am a big fan of the technical expertise invloved in a lineout and I believe that more throws would be stolen as a result of quality jumping if refs watched this more closely.
Your thoughts....
