The following from News24:-

"A stellar year for the Springboks was triumphantly crowned on Sunday evening when the team collected the three top awards in the World Rugby Awards at a glittering event in Tokyo.

Rassie Erasmus was named as Coach of the Year, the Springboks were named Team of the Year and Pieter-Steph du Toit was named as World Player of the Year.

The awards were rich reward for a year in which the Springboks completed the unprecedented double of winning both the Rugby World Cup and the Rugby Championship in the same season.

The team finished the year at No 1 in the world rankings, for the first time since 2009.

The Springboks won 10 out of 12 tests, scoring 424 points and 52 tries and conceding only 138 points and 10 tries – only four of them in seven matches at the Rugby World Cup.

Statistically, it was the most successful Springbok season since 1998 when the team was in the middle of a 17-match winning streak.

It was the first time South Africa had won any of the top three awards since 2009.

The titles came a little over 24 hours after the team had collected the Rugby World Cup for the first time since 2007, with a 32-12 win over England at the International Stadium Yokohama in Japan.

The Springboks were chosen in preference to fellow Rugby World Cup semi-finalists England, Wales and New Zealand and Japan.

The Coach of the Year nominees along with Erasmus were Eddie Jones (England), Warren Gatland (Wales), Steve Hansen (New Zealand) and Jamie Joseph (Japan).

Du Toit won the vote ahead of team mate Cheslin Kolbe, Tom Curry (England), Alun Wyn Jones (Wales), Ardie Savea (New Zealand) and Joe Taufete’e (USA).

South Africa were also nominated in two other categories.

Herschel Jantjies was listed with England wing Joe Cokanasiga and France flyhalf Romain Ntamack in the category of Breakthrough Player of the Year, for players who have appeared in less than a full international season. The award was won by the 20-year-old Ntamack who has established himself as his nation’s preferred flyhalf.

Cobus Reinach’s hat-trick try in the 66-7 demolition of Canada was nominated as one of the four tries of the year. TJ Perenara of New Zealand took the award for a length-of-the-field score involving several players against Namibia."

These awards are not awarded by the public - it is done by Rugby Experts.   But then we have idiots on site that will have to run for cover bcause of the WC win and their attacks on Erasmus and Du Toit.  Happy Idiots Day to them.

Finally an award has been made to the most underrated Sprinbok  to represent the Green and Gold since he was first selected.

A fitting award made by rugby folks who understand the strength, skill, determination and ability that he shows at all times.

What a great asset he is to SA and Springbok rugby.

Well done PSD and thank you.

Also pleased to see the Springboks win the WC and scoop up numerous awards.

Congratulations are in order to all.

DdDraad well done with you selection and wise words regarding

the team to start the final.

Many of us have enough egg to last us for awhile regarding selections.

Most underrated......hell he was rated the South African Player of the Year in 2018 and you can't read a SA Rugby Site that isn't talking him up. He certainly isn't underrated.

There is no objective way of establishing the World Player of the Year. In a WC year it will always go to a player from the Winning Team. Given Kolbe and Stephanie were nominated it was always going to go to the more established player if we won the final.
Congratulations to him and Rassie. But Ardie Savea was by far the best flank in the world in 2019.

This officially makes Steph the most overrated Bok of all time. It takes some doing, there was Lambie and Watson too. Best player in the world? I'd like to see how we'd have fared without Faf, Pollard, Beast and Thor. Great Boks seldom win the popularity contents .

"In a WC year it will always go to a player from the Winning Team"

You are correct, but in 2011 it went to a Frenchman. The whole thing is subjective in anyway. How do you really pick one from the lot? What isn't that subjective is being nominated in the first place...yes, I know there are some unlucky omissions, but unworthy winners? I can agree on lucky, but unworthy?  There might be more value to him than what you are prepared to concede...

It would have been moving if they gave it to the Beast....certainly the most dominant player on the park yesterday. But for some reason, he has never really been popular with Bok fans.

So much noise about over here. Well done PSdT. Thouroughly deserved. What a player he has become. I keep thinking back to RWC2015 where Japan made him look like a donkey in a show jump. Now he is a steed of note. I’m so so happy for him.

Concede implies I've been persuaded Draad. Frankly I think he and Lomp were our least influential starting forwards  yesterday, and the numbers back that up.

Jarhead, the problem is that he is still the same player. Nothing has changed. He was always the media's blue-eye and now he receives greater recognition than our key Boks. Steph was a passenger. In fact, omitting him would have upgraded the team. He is no flank.

Thank heavens that Matfield wasn't playing then.Give credit when it is due even if you are and have been wrong all along with respect PSdT.
Well that confirms that their must be something really great in the air around Kings Park. The Sharks do have an excellent scouting squad and just look at what they continually uncover, mold, respect add the finishing fully rounded touches to and then let them out to play.
Thanks Sharks keep up the good work.

Well done to Rassie and well done to Pieter-Steph.
The noobs who have been trashing these two great rugby men should be feeling rather foolish around about now but I'm guessing they'll be calling everyone else stupid for recognising what they were too dumb to see for themselves.

Hahahahaha Hahahahaha.

Dr Moz it's you, Organhuffer and Pakster who under rated Du Toit not the public or the rugby world.

As I said to poor Organhuffer its him against the world and that was NOT going well.

Then there is Rassie you three blundered again!!

World coach of the year for very good reasons and world player of the year also for very good reason.

Yet you still go on with your collective BS although Pakster has been quiet. Perhaps he has seen the light.

Personally I have have had more than enough of all this BS about Rassie, Du Toit, Malherbe and Allende. Hopefully the absurd comments will stop. LMAO!

Why do you persist with Malherbe? You're the only one talking about Malherbe Sitzsack.

Back to Steph. Poor defence against Wales and New Zealand and an ineffective ball carrier. Is 2m in 4 carries world class? In a game where the Boks are physically dominating? Old man Thor made 46m in 11 runs and Eben 11 in 5. Two much less appreciated players. It's laughable that you find that kind of production elite. How about 5m in 3 runs against Wales and more missed tackles? High volume around the fringes when teams are direct, yet at a cost.

Point to this mythical elite production. Any test will suffice. Once again the groupies have no specifics, just a sheet of superlatives.

Problem is that the two major dunces on site are too dense from a rugby perspective to understand the game at all and their main occupation for years has been to find fault with some players they dislike and in the process they never saw the positives pf their pet hate players and neither the mistakes their favourite players make.   If they cannot find any fault they dream up BS and use lies to justify their attacks on players.

There contributions have nothing to do with rugby, but with the image they try to create about themselves being the best rugby analysts in the world.  What is really laughable is that Mozart himself made that claim on site when I challenged him on one of his lies.

So what else is new - they have been preaching  BS for years on site and one cannot but laugh at their distortions and lies when they are routinely caught out.   One can only but wonder which of the two is most ignorant and dishonest.
This is hilarious and really we should remind them in future about it.  L MAO.  .

The question was simple, where is this elite production?

"There contributions have nothing to do with rugby"

That's rich coming from you, your posts are devoid of rugby material yet filled with vitriol. You have the gall to deem other posters are "worthless", "useless" and "should be ignored", yet your scant contributions are never a problem, not even your endless lies.

Back to the above question Lügnerin. You might want to at least pretend to be about rugby.

Go through all the tests this year and you may find it - in the meantime change your user name and maybe it would take a few weeks before you are caught out being as think  as a brick.   After your hysteria of the last two days maybe we could be spared idiocy for a few weeks.

Just a question is your totally deluded brain thinking that you know more about rugby than the following:-

John Smit, George Gregan, Maggie Alphonsi, Clive Woodward, Brian O'Driscoll, Agustín Pichot, Richie McCaw and Fabien Galthié?

Back to the question Lügnerin. Don't tell me to look at these tests, I already have. I know exactly what he does and doesn't do. I'm asking you to tell me something you yourself know. Lets see how much rugby you really know. I won't hold my breath.

Was Stephanie better than Savea againstthe ABs .....was he better than Itoje yesterday. If the answer to those questions is no, it has to be a popular choice.
Like  Luke Watson he is a player who benefits from the work of others, while selecting the more glamorous bits for himself. Any flank who can't contribute to the breakdown isn't the Player of the Year. It's just fake news.

The Kolbe try was created by fantastic loose forward play. AM was tackled, and PSDT was first to the ruck. AM saw that PSDT was running a support line, and passed the ball off the ground, for Steph to run onto. PSDT had already seen Kolbe in space and made a fantastic pass like a centre, and Kolbe did the rest and scored. PSDT was a link player between the ruck and an outside back.

This ended the game as a contest, and the Boks were world champs. The engraver was seen a few seconds later inscribing the Bok name as Champions.

  • World Cup Winner 2019
  • IRB rankings number 1 - (not just World Champs!!!)
  • World Team of the Year
  • World Player of the Year
  • World Coach of the Year
  • The most convincing victory in a world cup final ever. (20 Points)
  • The most points scored by a team at the 2019 World Cup.
  • Peer respect from greats including - John Smit, George Gregan, Maggie Alphonsi, Clive Woodward, Brian O'Driscoll, Agustín Pichot, Richie McCaw and Fabien Galthié

  • Any contrary arguments are awkward, to say the least...

Not quite. I'm still completing my notes. The final was his best test of the season, yet it already isn't what you thought. He'll need to up the ante for the remainder. Poor read on a rush out the line, tackle stood up in ENG 22 requiring support from Eben and Lood, nothing much of note yet. Guarding rucks, one ineffective counter ruck, a few run supports (Boks stacking runners behind carriers to add force in contact), some participation in pods with one pass thus far, a few scrums. The search goes on for this mythical production of Blue-Eye. Largely anonymous.

Yet you still go on with your collective BS although Pakster has been quiet. Perhaps he has seen the light.

    First off, congratulations to Steph.

Then to answer Beeno, no, I'm still luke-warm about Steph. I think he's good, but there is no doubt he gets a lopsided amount of media attention that magnifies his contributions out of proportion to that of other players grafting at the same level. Even in the second half of the final the English commentators started gushing every time he made a tackle, even though Mostert and Marx were quietly racking up tackles at a faster rate. Not a peep about either of their efforts.

On this forum we have seen how any attempt to point out a Steph error meets with rabid resistance. In the eyes of many he is already beyond criticism. Flawless. It's always someone else who screws up, never Steph. My innate sense of fairness rebels at that type of thing.

Not sure why we all have to agree on him anyway. Are we robots? Why are we so threatened by contrasting views that we try to push everyone towards a certain point of view? See Beeno above, "he has seen the light". He thinks like we think. Sorry, I'm not a herd animal.

I have watched the game again, Stephanie's contributions:
1 A nice tackle on May in space.
2 A good stop in the goal line stand
3 A very quiet first half, his energy level was notably higher in the second half
4 A few committed rushes onto Ford, a few of which were a bit late.
5 One or two  disruptions of the high ball.
6 A dive onto Watson near our line after he hit the deck dislodging the ball.
7 A hold up for a maul he got credit for but was mostly de Allende
8 A wide tackle on May who was hemmed in by touch.
9 He was in position to receive the ball from Am and make a perfectly routine pass to Kolbe who did all the work for the last try, which was icing on the cake....your description Shark is much embellished.
    ....
The commentating hype was typical. Most of this stuff was routine. Missing from all this was one meaningful effort at the breakdown.  Even in the Boks counter rucking mode, which helped subdue Curry  and Underhill, Stephanie was rarely the lead actor.
Game  and again when I've gone back and examined the micro details I haven't found the substance which supports all the adulation. But I have no trouble seeing what Itoje and Savea, two rival candidates, contribute in every game

Savea is pure class, Itoje is all hype. I’d say Savea and PSDT are on a par in terms of their respective impacts Itoje is a bloody pretender - hyped as brilliant but seldom produces anything of note. Was good against the AB’s as was most of the England side - that’s where it ends. Would not smell the Bok side other than ahead of Mostert Itoje was not a candidate for the award by the way - Curry was

PSDT deserves credit for being the first to the ruck - before Vermuelen or even the specialist fetcher Francios Louw who was also fresh off the bench.
It was reading the context of a game, and making the right decision, in the most important game of rugby in the world. I did not see any other loosie do this on the day. He could have carried it up, or passed towards his forwards. It was a pinpoint pass.

I don't over embellish a player's involvement, nor diminish it. Steph is a replaceable player. Dan du Preez would immediately upgrade the team not only in terms of physicality but skills and work ethic. Steph is a C+ contributor. A player caught between two positions. He is the Serfontein of the forwards; not quite a lock, not quite a flank. The final, his best game of the campaign, saw contributions so minuscule that they could realistically have been performed by any average player. Dare I say, even someone like Notshe or Van Staden. Yet again, Bok rugby finds itself enamoured with a reputation. Will Steph ever match his reputation?
