Just as flaccid as ou Oom. You can save yourself the effort and just tuck your tail between your legs. These defeats of yours are a mere formality at this point.

From a neutral perspective... surprised PSDT won the award for "player of the year"...

"Reliable, 80min, worker award" maybe... but compare him to the impact of Faf or others on Bok team and I agree it is highly subjective...

I think faf (although a dwarf) deserved to be in the mix too - he was immense for the boks seriously and lions too prior... he's been consistent feature since boks started winning tests again in the Rassie era...

his speed / box kicks(lol) / foresight & tackling pound for pound is unbelievable... anyway Im sure dwarves dont get as much attention as 6'5" flankers.......

I dont agree Itoje overrated - I think he's an absolute competitor and would be better as flanker (I think thats where he played in Lions tour of NZ?) than lock...

Thing is the underhill / curry combo also hard to displace... Courtney was shown as a light weight especially v Saffas...

given the outcome of the GF - I wonder if it was a SH team would it been a closer match up - Aus v Boks generally decided by home ground and Boks v Kiwi also pretty close this year...

Of the two, Kolbe has the most potential, but he was not the premier wing of the Boks. Where was the Japaese talisman? What of Itoje, Curry, Underhill, Hooper, Beauden, Faf, Thor, Beast? These players were far more integral. Steph made no game changing contributions. He was largely a bystander in the midst of key Boks. Some say he deserves it on the basis of his pass to Kolbe, but what of Louw's game changing turnover against Wales? What of Mapimpi's excellent skills to break the game open with that chip and try? Mapimpi was a better Bok. Another unappreciated player. Our best players are often undervalued. Thor and Eben were massive in the final.

The POTY award is just a popularity contest. I lost respect for it after Shane Williams won it in 2008, and McCaw in 2009.

Nonsense.....there were so many rucks where Steph wasn't there....he just happened to be there on the right flank....right where he had made a tackle a few phases before. No reading of the  game ...pure chance....he caught a simple pass and made a simple pass.

This is the hype we are immersed in.

Lets summarize the comments of some on site first-

The Springboks won the World Cup

Team of the Year  -   Springboks

Coach of the Year -  Erasmus

Player of the Year -  Du  Toit

Idiot of the Year  -   AO aka Liza Page aka a dozen other User Names

Co-Idiot of the Year - Mozart aka Shifty Schiff-Strzok

Insofar as your comments are concerned are concerned there are two issues to be addressed.

About De Klerk I must say he was extremely good - but I think what counted against him may have been his tendency to give away penalties in tests - in some tests  there was up to three of those.   The Panel would have considered that as well .

As to the comments on the issue of the final I think that unlike some on site the real rugby strength is still in the Southern Hemisphere and that a final between NZ, Australia and SA would have been more competitive.   However, I have not seen the Springboks playing like they did in the final in decades and do believe that even against SH countries  the Springboks would also have won.

These lists pale in comparison to film analysis. Thus far, Steph's only contributions at the breakdown saw him cleared away, a couple of scripted passes from our base patterns and a few regulation tackles - the big 1v1 requiring Eben and Lood to complete!

One of the Springbok cheerleaders could have tackled "Courtney" Cox backwards.

The only English players that could get over the advantage line in contact was Tuiliaga and Billy Vunipola, and to some degree Mako Vunipola. If these three were not on the field things could have gotten very embarrassing for England.

Poms made the mistake of looking for the home run pass early. They butchered several opportunities through a lack of patience, which played into our hands. We were about field position and fundamentals. They should have known better, and played for territory to assert their superior strike power. No matter what innovations evolve, rugby is won and lost in the trenches. I assumed Jones would know better, but he did not. They underestimated us, and were throttled out of the game. No matter what tier a team is, if they possess power up front, they can take your attack out of the game. England were never given a genuine platform to get in the game. Twickenham 2018 was the warning. A more complete team taken out through ignorance, that'll hurt them deeply. and that is no better remedy for foolishness. Let it burn within them this entire cycle, lets see how they respond to this lesson. Either way, a botched final can never be redeemed, even if they win the next one!

He could have carried it up, or passed towards his forwards. It was a pinpoint pass.

Quite high actually, Kolbe had to jump to catch it, but the draw was good and Kolbe's handling thankfully too because we see those high passes being dropped quite often. Drawing and passing is Rugby 101 though, isn't it?

If you want to see a pinpoint pass, watch Patchell's against NZ in the bronze game where he floated it flat past two of his own and two NZ defenders, just enough to have Ben Smith thinking about an intercept for a split second, right into Amos's breadbasket in space to send him clean through. If that pass was anything less than perfect, like Amos had to stop to catch it or jump for it, Smith would have had time to get him. That's the kind of pass that requires not just basic skill, but vision and timing as well.

If you want to read nonsense you may.  Why was Du Toit credited with a try assist by ESPN?  That type of thing was not done regularly bt ESPN so our PP members should reflect before they write BS.

Why was Du Toit credited with a try assist by ESPN?

Because he made the pass to the try scorer. That's what ESPN credits as a try assist. You'll see Am credited with a TA for the same reason.

See Aaron Smith credited with 3 TAs in the NZ/Wales game. A routine pass to Ben Smith, who still had to beat 3 defenders to score, is credited as an assist to him because it was the last pass before the try.

Sure - but that does not happen in every case where the last passer is credited with the last pass before a try is scored.   The player must have done something further by drawing in defenders or caused to put a player in the clear.   That is the answer and believe me Du Toit deserve that credit - same as Am did.

No, it happens in every case. Scoring pass gets an assist, whether you beat 5 defenders before passing or merely caught it and sent it on.

Another example: Faf getting an assist against Japan for merely passing the ball to Mapimpi fro m the base of the scrum.

Aug and Moz, time to just let it go. Granted, an argument can be made that one of the other players shortlisted with PSTD could or maybe even should have won the award over him, but if we were to go on your summation of the man, he would be worth nothing more than a Currie Cup player let alone even being in the discussion for World player of the year. It is very simple, I'd rather take the opinions of the elite panel that selected him as player of the year, than either of you that never achieved anything as rugby players. You guys are just looking more and more silly as this goes on.

Any man that never ever admits he is wrong, is a liar.

Well, assuming it's actually possible for these two clowns too look sillier than they do already.

LMAO!

No surprise to see the board's noobs backing the wrong horse . . . and very funny to see them wriggling and squirming and pretending they didn't.

World Rugby Player of the Year and World Rugby Coach of the Year . . . sssschplottttttttt and ssssssschplottttt!

Aug, I'm not attacking you, I feel I need to add that, because it probably looks like I am. The stats in rugby don't tell you the quality of a tackle, or how 1m gained in traffic is golden, or how many players were drawn into a tackle, leaving gaps for others to exploit, or the timing of a good pass, or the value of the correct decision to kick etc etc etc. You can easily break down this performance in a way the diminishes PSDT performance using stats, but everyone knows there is more to it than that. Also, Vermeulen had a blinder of a final and I think we all agree with that. But using that exceptional performance by Vermeulen to diminish PSDT's performance is just underhanded , you know it and I know it.

I am well aware of the limitations of stats, hence it is never my primary source of analysis. I break down film. I don't always have the time or desire to splice footage to post here, so stats are easier for everyone to access. Trust me, Steph was no world's best. I'll be covering the final in more detail throughout the week, that will include Steph.

Aug, I know that we all think that WRPOTY should be the best player of the year, but it doesn't say so on their site.

From wiki: "The award is presented to honour "the achievements of those involved at the highest level of the world game on the field"   ...that's all.

His achievements over the past year was honored...nothing more. Something about him convinced the judges that he should get it...somehow he stood out from the rest.

PS, to me he was the embodiment of the "heart of the team...not only courage, but compassion/spirit too...some x-factor in spirit. A great roll model for kids...and humble too.

Yes, and I think he ...and Faf lifts the team to another level when the chips are down...Beast too. Amazing seeing him getting psyched-up after a huge scrum...lifts the whole team. Lot's of small victories along the way to the final triumph.
