I have watched almost all the games so far. What is it that you want from a flyhalf in modern rugby?
Should he be a Henry Honniball type?Should he be a dead-eye Dick like Jannie de Beer?Should he be a strong heavy running flyhalf who breaks the line etc.
I think the guy with the best qualities at the moment and who uses his flair, speed and ability to read the game very well - and manages to underpin those qualities with solid defence (at times) is.....
Beauden Barret
One day you'll be able to deploy a whole backline with all Barret brothers..
Who else is there: None of the SA guys are close at the moment.
20 Mar 2017, 17:14#2
I thought for a moment you were referring to a South African prospect.

Sorry - The entire SR competition as it stands.
SA, I'd think the two second generation kids du Preez and du Plessis are at the moment the best we have to offer.
In a South African context only out of 10 wher 10 would be the Barret standard: Lions - Jantjies > 6 Bulls - Pollard > 5 and Schoeman (to my mind the better at the moment) > 6Cheetahs > Zaylinga > 6Sharks > Lambie (injured as has become customary) Bosch > 6.5And then the two Stormers on 7 or so.

He is not playing Super Rugby anymore - so lets just add Morne Steyn and Fat Fransie because you started it referring to a player outside of Super Rugby. Clear cases of 2.5 out of 10.

You are right.
Mr Boshof is still the best of the sorry lot.
Glad we agree on something.

The WP guy was looking a good prospect- the others are either Curry Cup or Super Rugby standard at best.
Goosen would be the best option if he starts playing at 10 for his new/old club

So the defense of Pollard is out with guns blazing, Nobody really wants to discard Pollard - but he played three matches and was not up to standard. How many matches are needed in your book before we can reassess Pollard's performance?
You are notorious for stating that players must be selected based on reputation and performance count for nothing - so we need an answer to get a review process going.

I agree with you Mach...Beauden Barrett does stand out...there are no Dan Carters and Johnny Wilkinsons around at present but Nicolas Sanchez must be included...Patrick Lambie has had an unfortunate start...extremely talented but injury has haunted him...a very strong character though who never gives up.
History is there for the making and it's a long road but I'll still back Lambie over SA's choice... Barrett is NZ and Sanchez is a strong challenger for no 10.

From what I have seen it's: Lambie, Pollard (assuming he gets back his fitness & form), & Jantjies (but will he ever perform at Bok level). Boshof was good but his form after the first year seems to have collapsed. No outstanding choices I'm afraid to say.

Lambie has no flyhalf model.....the longer the game the less sure he seems. And then he gets hurt.

Pollard has a very limited kicking game, even when in form. When kicking is the best option- Pollard is not the best option. If he can't develop his kicking game, he would be better moving to inside centre.
In current form, Pollard is a small slow loose forward, plodding along with no real clue what is going on.
Goosen gives the best all round game at 10. When our forwards are dominating - he can play a 10 man game- but still go wide when the opportunities presents itself. He does not just shuffle the ball on- he is a threat at the advantage line as well.
He is less frail than he was when he started- and more reliable on defence than Lambie.

Pollard is barely back from injury and you blame his year-long absence to justify his poor performances after his return.
So why mention Lambie because he was injured. Why are you apt to rejoice about injuries to players you dislike?

The biggest coward ever in a Springbok jers ey was Morne Steyn. He avoided contact at all costs and duck out of defending and he stood so far in the pocket to ensure defenders cannot get to him before kicking or throwing hospital passes to centers.
20 Mar 2017, 20:37#21
Who is the best current Super Rugby flyhalf ? ..well the stats don't lie......Only one NZ flyhalf has orchestrated 100% SR wins this year in the toughest of conferences...
...Only one NZ flyhalf has won every game he's started at 10 for the All Blacks...that's 100%....And who will be his next victim?...the dozy Bulls at THE TRON...great educational experience awaiting the Springbok flyhalf as he will be learning from the best..

I was assuming we could only pick SA fly-halves, if we can pick from all teams in super rugby then none of my selections above would make the grade. I would pick Barrett and for non kiwi fly halves Sanchez.

Amen to Henry Honibal type...absolutely... the rest no but the problem we don't have the rugby intelligent coaches to even select this.
Even Henry could not save us...with coaching we have now...under an intelligent coach like Mac he was a game breaker...AC is no where in Ian Mac's class.
Poor ol' Ian Mac...imo the best Saffa coach ever...Luyt axed him because he knew f all about rugby and was immediate result orientated...Pieter Muller praises Mac and told me this over a few beers at the Keg one day...he said Mac was the best coach we ever had and if you remember Mac gave the Sharks the best run ever, so I respect that coming from Pieter who imo was probably the best DEFENSIVE SA centre ever.

The best Bok flyhalf since re-admission was Butch James. Perhaps I missed something but I didn't see anything special about Honniball.James a mixture of sorts had good hands and a good kicking game, always in control by putting his team on the front foot.He had a presence, you knew he was on the field, he'd never go AWOL and never shirk the tough stuff.
There isn't a single flyhalf remotely close to him in our current stocks.

@Denny, your opinion is cool.
But clearly you are not an expert on the role of a flyhalf.
Whilst Butch was a very reliable link, I would not put him in any top 10 of all flyhalfs in SA. But, let's see what the other more verbal "experts" say.
PS the OP question was related to the current playing Super Rugby flyhalfs and soon the thread digressed..

Considering SA failed to produce running flyhalves I would put James in the top 10 of Bok flyhalves and the fact that he won us a WC is all the more reason.State your alltime top 10 of SA flyhalves.

It's a no-brainer that Barrett is unchallenged as the top flyhalf in Super Rugby but what is a Henri Honnibal type?

I don't think that we should look at past flyhalfs as the game has moved on. I agree that Bauden Barrett has come in leaps and bounds for the modern game. He still need to work on his defence and kicking at goal but everything from controlling the game, breaking the line and getting his backs into space is what is required of a modern flyhalfs. I almost think that we have too much talent in SA right now but no talented 9 to help them out. Faf has shown his limitations and if you look at the successful half back combination like Connor Murray, sexton, Aaron Smith + Barrett, etc and we no true 9s at the moment that can direct the forwards or take pressure of our 10s. I think the last 4 years coincide not having fourie du preez and no challenger, but put any of our young guys next to Murray or Smith and watch what they can do. We have shift to much of our play on our 10s. I would almost do the same as England and pick 2 10s in the 10/12 combo to help with the tactical play, especially now that kicking is so important in our exit strategy.
21 Mar 2017, 11:04#36
Thing is ... which 10's, King?
The best we have is fragile and more on the sidelines than on the field.
The rest are poor to awful ... and besides ... if we were to select a 10 at 12 he had better be an improvement on the excellent stocks we currently have at 12.
Faff has a high work rate ... but a sh!t pass. We need one with an excellent feed ... a bullet pass. I like the youngster from the Cheetahs.
There is so much to fix. First step is to appoint a coach and get rid of this pretender.
Imagine the fun one could have putting a side together? Sooooooo much talent to choose from.
How anyone could mess it up like this is beyond me.

I don't think that we should look at past flyhalfs as the game has moved on.
Exactly right...Jonny Wilkinson was great behind a big English pack, by no means a running flyhalf but knew how to get his team going forward. Stephen Larkham, different....had great running backs and with his good hands knew how to get the most from them.Carter the complete flyhalf and lets not forget Mark Ella.....quick, great hands, didn't need to have a boot.
But how would these guys stack up against modern defences?.....well they won't get as much freedom of movement, rugby is too defense orientated and line speed in defence is a factor.
Kincorn...as a matter of interest who is your best all-time flyhalf? Mine would be Mark Ella.

Barrett is the obvious pick.
Some of his skills need work but he's the clear leader thus far for me.
My favorite attribute of his are the lines he runs in open play.

Scrumhalves.....Youngs, Webb, Marmion, Serin, Murray, Laidlaw
....
Flyhalves.....Lopez, Russell, Biggar, S.exton, Farrell
.......
These guys are all better rugby players than our Boks of last year. Not necessarily better athletes but more mature, better decision makers, ....and in most cases better competitors. Farrell, Biggar and S.exton in particular are committed players with real heart.
........
So many of our guys seem fatalistic....ready to give up at the first sign of adversity. This comes from the domestic competition, the critics, the coaches, the smarts of the players themselves......the standards that are set. The honesty of the criticism......in South Africa hyped players can't be criticized without an angry response.
.......
If we ever had it, we have completely lost the art of constructive criticism. Our players could benefit from smarter criticism. A clear calling out of areas that have to be improved. We are far too quick to anoint players.
....
And in truth so many of our youngsters are immature players, looking great when we are winning....but clueless when the model breaks down. Take a young player like Serin. He is already a brilliant decision maker who sees the field. He is a delight to watch, because he is constructive, everything he does has a specific purpose. And crucially he doesn't lose the plot when things go wrong.
...
The training up north in all it's dimensions is now in a different league. Which is why we should be incorporating players who are doing well up north, not exiling them.
