 Thanks Denny. I have one abiding memory of D6  ....... 'twas Tweede-nuwejaar & Carnival time, when as laaities my brother & I followed our favourite troop, the "Atcha Americans", from Woodstock all the way deep into District Six where we remained til very late that night, eventually returning home to an irate & worried mother who gave us a hiding before being sent to bed .

We never had any family in District Six, but we had relatives in Newlands & Claremont that were forced to move out due to the despicable Group Areas Act .

 Hidings were part and parcel of those times...geez I copped a few. Never from dad though....always from mum. Couldn't sit in big peoples conversations either....that was just a smack across the melon LOL Worse hidings were with the Kweperlat(quince tree branch)...opened you right up!!! Those were the days.....so different to now.

 When I studied at the new Cape University of Technology campus (Cape Technikon back then) , we surveyed (land surveying) the open lands next to Campus, where the houses used to be in District 6. I knew nothing of D6 until  David Kramer's play and only then realised where we studied.

Trafalgar High and Harold Cressy High are still there, so is the Moravian Church which we frequented on Sundays....interesting history the church....they were the first missionaries to come out of Germany....if you go to Genadendal where there's another Moravian Church you will see and old slave bell just outside of the church. Draad the Technikon is between Constitution Street and  Hanover Street which runs parallel to De Waal Park. We lived in Constitution. The bus used to come out of the city departing the Grand Parade and make it's way up Constitution into Walmer Estate. I can tell you some stories about Hanover Street.....it was a no-go zone at the best of times!
