A kiwi journo pointed out that:

"Of the Springboks match-day 23 who played in the last clash at the World Cup, 18 are playing again in Townsville.

But for minor injuries – both back in 2019 and now – it would likely be 21 of the same 23, suggesting that the Boks really haven't changed in mindset, strategy or personnel.

The team they were in 2019 is the team they are now, something that isn't true about the All Blacks.

Only 10 of their 23 who played in Yokohama two years ago will be involved this weekend and, critically, they will line up differently at halfback and first-five."

Doesn't mean the ABs will win of course but does show Boks are not evolving.

JW the fact that the wee abs had to change their players was an admission they were no good.

Our team apart from Vermuelen does not have aging problems.

I think Rassie's input and presence has been sorely missed.

Hopefully the Boks will be up for this match. we shall see.

José is unneeded. We require a coach, not an arrogant pencil pusher who uses people. As per players? His ability to evaluate talent and performance is even worse than his xs and os understanding of the game.

Two years ago, they were good enough to beat SA during the WC. The job of eliminating them from the tournament was carried out by EN.

So the question is to know whether they are good enough today to beat SA.

If they do not manage, steps backwards.

I heard Dave Rennie give them a bit of shit about their ages, I’m not sure? Are the current squad getting a bit long in the tooth? Must be time to start developing a new team

2019 is not that long ago, especially given 2020 was written off due to Covid.
The Boks won the 4 Nations Champs in 2019, along with the World Cup, and were 1st on the annual ratings.

That said, the Boks do need to use their backline more. If both the backs and forwards play well it means more tries.
Boks need an inside center that is a playmaker and ball carrier.

This article is interesting as it supports the idea that most of the Bok team are in their prime. It also points out that :
"Players such as Duane Vermeulen, Willie le Roux, and Frans Steyn remain absolutely critical to the Springbok cause, but they are entering the twilight of their careers. As the Springboks start to plan for the 2023 Rugby World Cup and beyond, the Boks will need to prepare for life without their veterans."

So, according to this article age is not the Boks problem. Perhaps lack of flexibility in game plan (plan b) is and that would point to the coach as an issue (of being stuck in the past). We will see if the old game plan works against an evolving AB side in the next couple of weeks.
ps. currently Boks have 10 players over 30; ABs have 4.

JW your post is spot on regarding no new young players in the squad.

But the old saying "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" is the mentality I would suggest.

In the mean time the young players with potential to become Springboks are playing overseas and after a number of years are eligible for selection in the country they are playing in.

The "others" who remain in SA are selected to play domestic rugby which is hanging on a thread with most Rugby Unions financially strapped and the quality of rugby is poor (being kind).

Quantity not Quality is the vision for most things in SA today, unfortunately.

Oh for yesterdays. Alas, they are forever gone I am afraid.

It's not as simple as using the backs more, or running the ball more. There doesn't need to be a plan a or b, you just need to be functional at what you do. Running more didn't work, because the coaching isn't where it needs to be. The Boks passed 120 times, the Wallabies 81. Who was more successful using the ball? Would another thirty to forty runs increase our effectiveness? No. This is why José has such a limited gameplan: He cannot coach a well rounded game. So, it's a game plan where risk is stripped down as much as possible, and players think as little as possible.

Ask yourself this.

If Fat Rassie could change his team who would he change.

We know he can make drastic improvements to the front row ... but ... he would need to get rid of Hamburger Nyakane and Bongi the midget.

Both of these quotas are a vital count to his transformation requirements. This means that no matter how bad they are as players he is forced to keep them in the mix ... as he has committed himself to black empowerment.

The clown he has at 6 ... is another vital part of  the affirmative action contingency ... plus Fat Rassie went and made this fool Bok captain.

There will be an national uproar if he drops him now. It doesn't matter how pathetic Kolisi is, Fat Rassie has no choice but to play him every match.

He wanted to be the hero and now it's come back to bite him on the ass.

Elton Jantjies is another forced selection as he is also a part of the affirmative action count.

Look at Am. This fool is almost as useless as Jantjies but he too must be included in the mix because he makes up the black player count.

Both Mapimpi and Nkosi fall under the same black empowerment count.

That is 6 of the starting 15 that are enforced selections. All of them useless. All of them quotas.

Rassie has painted himself into a corner and he can't get out of what he's committed himself to.

Are there any better black options available.

No ... sadly not.

The talented whites that should be there are being ignored ... and so they leave these shores for a future elsewhere ... in their droves.

It took half a test season for these goats to lose their number 1 spot.

I hope they get thrashed tomorrow.
