BB

Lets face fact there were sports wise a weekend of poor and very weak performances by SA sides.  In the case of Rugby the fact is that it was bad news for rugby supporters in that -

*    three of the four SA Super Rugby teams lost their matches badly;

*    both the Cheetahs and the Kings lost their matches in the GT 14; and

*    the great Pieter-Steff du Toit was injured in the game lost by the Stormers.

On the positive side insofar as the Rugby supporters is concerned the wins by the Sharks were really expected and is warmly welcomed.    Insofar as the Los Angeles Cup is concerned it was a mixed bag,  The Blitzbokke struggled badly -

*   against Ireland in the pool phase of the tournament and ended up drawing the match 19-19; and

*   against the USA they were 10-0 behind at one stage and ended up with a lucky win of 12-10;

Despite a relatively easy win in the  semi against New Zealand was back in the struggle mode against Fiji  being 19-0 behind and then ended up with the score being 24-12 minutes before the end of the game.  They then managed to score another try and the score was 24-17 and then had to kick in with  seconds left on the clock and somehow managed to et the ball back and score the match levelling score by scoring another converted try.   The rest is history.   Nevertheless the fact that they won by hook and by crook in the final was great news in a very disappointing weekend for SA rugby fans,

On the cricket side the news was exactly opposite and the win by the Proteas men against Australia was not expected and the margin of victory was indeed surprising.  It was due to -

*   a well-deserved and excellent century by Heinrich Klaasen;

*   excellent bowling by the Protea bowlers coupled to excellent bowling c hanges and feld placings by De Kock; and

*   3 excellent catches by the newbie Verreynne - who helped also with a good batting performance as well.

The Proteas women in beating both England and Pakistan went through to the semi's in the women T20 WC championship.   Depending upon their performance against the West Indies they would meet either India or Australia in the semi.

Thanks for the bakgat cricket news ouMaaik ......... our meisies are undoubtedly competitive at cricket, yet rugby seems to remain in the 'agsiestog' basket. Sad.

Not  taking the conversion to get the kickoff in time was cool and the  conversion of the final regular time try was brilliant. The Blitz certainly proved they can’t be counted out till the final whistle. They are doing well....in spite of not having a dominant finisher like Senatla, Isles or Baker.

From the Eagles perspective, they are competitive in this format and the spectators get it.....a way for the game to grow in the US.

Yes the US side is very good and it was good to see a few celebs supporting Rugby union is meant to be the fastest growing sport in the US, they have over a million playing the game which is encouraging My son was talking about going to coach and play out there a while back but is nicely set up here now so possibly something for the future.

Sounds like he has good options Dave...a stint in the US might be fun, something different.

Yeah he is still a baby in coaching terms so has plenty to learn I also suggested a stint with my mate in SA who was the Griquas coach and is now coaching Paarl Boys High A season shadowing him would be a great learning curve but also would be lovely for him to gain exposure to the wonderful SA schools rugby culture we all grew up playing in

South Africa is a dangerous place for someone who doesn't know the rules of the jungle, but Paarl is one of the better places.
