CAPE TOWN - With Bok coach Heyneke Meyer yet to confirm who the 32nd and final member of his touring squad for their tour of Ireland, Scotland and England, EWN Sport understands the player that he is looking to bring into his squad is Northampton Saints tighthead prop Brian Mujati.
While Mujati has played 12 Tests for the Springboks in 2008, current eligibility rules extended to selection for the national team precludes him from being picked as he is not a South African passport holder and is a Zimbabwean citizen.
Since his move from Western Province to the Saints in 2009, he has become one of the best tighthead props in Europe and along with incumbent Jannie du Plessis, would provide a potent option for the Springboks in the future.
It is exactly that form that appears to have prompted Meyer to once again explore the possibility of him re-igniting his Springbok career. Previous coach Peter de Villiers also looked at picking him ahead of the Rugby World Cup in 2011 but was unable to do so.
The South African Rugby Union (Saru)were not able to confirm to EWN Sport as to whether team management had asked them to re-investigate whether Mujati would now be available, or indeed if they were looking at re-visiting the situation with the relevant government authorities.
When EWN Sport contacted the CEO of Northampton, Allan Robson, he was not able to shed any light on the matter, saying no direct contact had yet been made with the club - but that it was possible the player had been approached directly.
Earlier in the week, Meyer said in a press conference that they were talking to the “club” of the 32nd player about a possible selection.
If Meyer is not able to select Mujati, Western Province tighthead Frans Malherbe - who was flown out at short notice for the Rugby Championship game in New Zealand - is likely fill the last place in the squad.
Toulouse prop Gurthro Steenkamp, who was a substitute in Toulouse’s 32-13 win over Racing Metro in the France Top 14 on Thursday, flew to Paris on Friday to sort out his United Kingdom visa for the trip. He will first be cleared by his own medical staff at the French club, before reporting for Springbok duty in Dublin.
The prop situation is clearly one of concern for Meyer. Incumbent tighthead du Plessis did not link up with the squad in Cape Town ahead of the trip, as he was given the week off to rest by Meyer, after a monumental workload in 2012 already.
With only 5 props selected in the tour group - Pat Cilliers, Tendai Mtawarira, CJ van der Linde, Steenkamp and du Plessis - it stands to reason that Meyer will be looking for one other.
On this tour, match-day squads will consist of 23 players, with a full replacement front row on the bench to prevent the game going to uncontested scrums.
Should the Boks undergo a real crisis on their arrival in Dublin, they could call on the immediate likes of BJ Botha, Wian du Preez and Heinke van der Merwe - who are Springboks and currently plying their trade in Ireland
