British Lions captain . . .

I see the odds on Alun-Wyn Jones being named Lions skipper have shortened considerably since he was appointed Wales captain and since Dylan Hartley's role as England captain has become uncertain.

Also in AW Jones favour is the fact that so many excellent British Lions captains have been locks . . . think Willie-John McBride, Bill Beaumont, Martin Johnson and Paul O'Connell. They do tend to give the Lions captaincy to one of the big imposing guys in the squad.

Hope it's Alun-Wyn Jones. I think he'll do a great job but he'll need to prove it in the 6N first.

 Nah give it to hartley so he can add to his impressive list of cards almost none of them saying ' wish you were here 'I am sure hartley would enjoy  time off to visit  Rotorua .

You put your finger on the weakness in the Jones logic. There are half a dozen better locks.

I'll give you Itoje even though there are indications are that he will be used at blindside flanker . . . but we still need 3 more names. 
Please don't just prattle off names of locks that you know. AWJ is more experienced and better than Launchbury, Kruis, Lawes, Toner, Ryan, Charteris and Richie Gray. 
Henderson, Swinson and Jonny Gray are all great prospects but lack the experience. So come on then . . . who are these other certainties?

Who isn't better than Alun-lose Jones might be the better question. Just a few data points from the Welsh/Pom match. ........... 'Wales won a turnover and prop Rob Evans broke like a centre. They went wide left but Wyn Jones knocked on in a tackle. ... England hammered at the Welsh line but suddenly Biggar intercepted and raced down field. With Daly closing in on him Biggar kicked downfield but Daly slid to the ball and flykicked it into touch. Hymns and Arias rang out, but Wales made a mess of the line-out. ..... Man of the Match: Dan Biggar and Justin Tipuric stood out for Wales. For England George Ford's judgement was great and Elliot Daly saved and scored tries. And then you looked at the locks, the men with the grubbiest jerseys on the field, two hard working players, Courtney Lawes and Joe Launchbury, and our choice is industrious Joe Launchbury, not only for ruling the line-outs.' ....... Seems the English locks dominated Lose-Jones.

 Launchbury does the hard yards and was well worthy of his MOTM award.
Not cos he's the Wasps Captain or anything like that.

Yes, Launchbury had a good game and was a worthy MotM, but only a complete rugby noob would think that because a player was good, his opposite number was poor. AWJ was pretty close to the MotM himself.

I actually think it's more a case of Launchbury, Kruis and Itoje fighting it out for the 2nd lock position alongside AWJ than AWJ fighting for his place in the Lions starting XV.

We'll see what happens. I suspect Moffie and pickitupandrun will be feeling a bit foolish when the British Lions run out for the first test. AWJ may not be captain but he'll be one of the starting locks.
