John Kirwan playfully warned that the All Blacks are set to "steal" the Springboks' secrets with Tony Brown's impending return to New Zealand's coaching team. On the Rivals podcast, Kirwan and Springbok icon Victor Matfield discussed Brown, who is currently sharpening the Springboks' attack, but will switch allegiances post-2027 World Cup to assist head coach Dave Rennie from 2028. This early announcement by NZ Rugby seems to signal a bold, strategic move for the future.

Kirwan expressed his enthusiasm for NZ Rugby's forward-thinking. “I’m really actually quite excited,” he shared. “For NZ Rugby to announce something so far ahead, for me, it’s the first time I’ve seen them being really positive in what they want to do moving forward.” He then half-joked about leveraging Brown’s insider knowledge from his time with the Springboks, “I understand that he has to stay and do his job, but then we’ll steal all your IP, Victor, and bring it back to New Zealand – which is what you guys have done in the first place.”

“We’ll use him, we’ll tap into all his knowledge for this last year and hopefully he gets a World Cup with the Boks.”

Matfield responded to Kirwan's comments with good humor, acknowledging the special nature of Brown's new role. “That must be Tony’s dream,” he remarked. “He’s a New Zealander, he’s a proud All Black and this must be the ultimate job for him.” He also highlighted the poignant timing of Brown's transition, poised to possibly culminate with a World Cup victory.

The discussion then pivoted to a broader issue with Matfield questioning New Zealand’s selective policy concerning overseas-based talent. “Can I just ask a question?” Matfield pondered. “Why is it that New Zealand doesn’t select players who play overseas, but select coaches who coach overseas? Why is that allowed?” This pointed query underscores a noticeable policy discrepancy that might spark further debate within rugby circles.

The strategic recruitment of Brown not only strengthens the All Blacks’ coaching arsenal but also stirs the pot of international rugby politics, suggesting that the game off the field is every bit as tactical as on it.
