It was a clash that defied expectations and electrified the stands. In the 2021-22 Vodacom URC semi-final showdown, the Bulls charged into Dublin to face a Leinster team riding high off a dominant season. Leinster, having annihilated the Glasgow Warriors 76-14 in their previous game, were the undisputed favorites. Conversely, the Bulls had just scraped past the Sharks with a nail-biting 30-27 victory, courtesy of a last-minute drop goal at Loftus Versfeld.

The game kicked off with Leinster quickly gaining ground. A well-placed kick left Bulls winger David Kriel scrambling, and Leinster’s hooker Dan Sheehan pounced on the opportunity to score the first try. The Bulls, however, were not there to simply roll over. Flyhalf Chris Smith soon put the Bulls on the scoreboard with a penalty, followed by hooker Johan Grobbelaar who bulldozed over the line. Flank and captain Marcell Coetzee then added another, pushing the Bulls ahead to a 17-7 lead.

"We showed that we're not just here to participate, but to compete,"

Coetzee remarked on the team's resilient performance.

Leinster’s center Robbie Henshaw narrowed the gap with a try, leaving the score at a tense 17-14 by halftime. The second half saw the Bulls’ driving maul earn them a penalty try, further compounded by a yellow card to Leinster’s captain James Ryan. With the scoreboard at 24-14, tension was palpable. Leinster’s wing Rory O’Loughlin did manage to squeeze in a try, but flyhalf Johnny Sexton’s missed conversion kept the Bulls in the lead.

A crucial mistake by Leinster around the halfway mark led to a penalty for the Bulls, and veteran flyhalf Morné Steyn did not waste the chance, extending the lead to 27-19. Despite a late converted try by Leinster’s prop Cian Healy, the Bulls emerged victorious with a tight 27-26 scoreline, marking a monumental upset against the Irish titans.

"Bulls are a serious outfit,"

acknowledged Leinster’s coach post-match, tipping his hat to the tenacious South African team.

Though the Bulls' journey ended in heartbreak with an 18-13 defeat against the Stormers in the finals at Cape Town, their semi-final victory over Leinster remains a highlight of the tournament, showcasing their grit and determination against overwhelming odds.
