Bulls vs Benetton
That was a spanking.
I did not watch the match at all. I tried to found the starting line-up and found nothing at all. Cn someone please help.
For Benetton they have just come off a terrible season where the failed to register a single win in the Pro 14. I've seen them maybe 3 times snatching defeat from the draws of victory. They where also badly affected by international call ups and I think their confidence just drained away. But they did always try to play positive brand of rugby which I think this game demonstrated.
But I think they had so much motivation. There was people saying they had a favorable fixture list in the Rainbow Cup getting to play Zebre twice and the away game to Ospreys being handed to them due to a Covid outbreak in the Ospreys camp. They wanted to prove the doubters wrong. This as their first chance at silverware, it was at home, there was a home crowd cheering them on and after all Italy has been throw with Covid and the season they had I'm sure they really wanted to win it for them. It was also the managers and several players final game for the team and giving them a good send off was probably extra motivation. They also had an additional weak off. The stars where just aligned for them.
Bulls where without a few of their first team choices, but that alone can't explain how dreadful they where and from what I've heard their on the road record is pretty poor but I know they can play so much better than this, at least from what I've seen of them play. It was just a horror show to be honest. But I wouldn't judge them or SA club rugby in general off one bad game. But I think this goes to show that SA teams are not going just stroll up north and dominate. Even against a supposedly weak team like Benetton, you're still going need to play well to beat them, and the Bulls where no where near close to even putting in average performance in that game. SA teams will also need time to adapt to Northern Hemisphere refs, its gonna probably take a season or two for them to find their feat.
Wow. Congratulations Treviso I am delighted for them. I was so wrong and didn't expect that. For a long time we hear about the physicality for the SA teams and I expected that them to be blown away.
In hindsight (magic eyes) I should have expected more from them. They have been playing this high intensive, expansive game and looked really, really good but were falling down in the last quarter in games in the Pro14. They lacked depth in cover with 15 players in the national squad in an extended international season. With a full stack there were very impressive. As they said in the post match interview, everything just clicked together on the night.
As the expression goes; You're never as good as you think you are when you win and you're never as bad as you feel when you loose.
Bulls were dreadful and looked like they were playing a pre-season friendly. They were never in the races and were completely out of sorts. They are better than that and with some games behind them I expect a lot more.
This is the best possible result for the new competition next year. I think there was a general air that the Pro 14 was a poor competition and only a small handful to teams could compete with the SA teams. This result will give a lot of confidence to all the existing pro 14 teams that they are not that good. Also the SA teams and supporters will have a lot more respect and interest for the new competition. They better take it seriously or they will get asses handed to them.
Bring on the FUN
Bulls are better
The ruck is refed differently in the Northern Hemisphere and it helps to have more players who can compete on the ground.
That was a hiding to nothing and probably puts the Bulls below the Kings performance in the Pro 14.
Now that the boks have left for the training camp, not much depth at all.
Just think of all the quality players abroad that would have made sure that this team can compete
Just thinking what this team would have done.
Pollard, Serfontein, Kriel, Jenkins, Snyman etc. This team would walk through the pro what ever it is called championship.
Lets hope we can get up and running in October with the new format, our players get some exposure and hopefully get some of our household names back in SA
I suspected a backfire...it always happens with over confident Saffas and to a lesser extent NZ'ers who despite their record respect and welcome their lesser brothers.
Kudos to the Italian team...I enjoy the game of rugby , not chest-beating attitudes of Tier 1 rugby sides. Several years ago I mentioned the potential in Japan and was swept aside by one-eyed posters. My next call is Georgia...I will gladly eat humble pie if I'm wrong.
How many first team players where the Bull's missing?
Personally Stav, I don't think it would have made a big difference judging the margin...Benetton still would have won...it was purely an under estimation of your adversary. A crucial mistake in any game especially when your opposition values winning an accolate in their books...Jones knew this when he was Japan's coach in 2015 WC.
"Military tactics"...the element of surprise...the best tactic of all...anyone who has been in battle will know this and history proves it.
