Swimmer admits cheating, but defends actions

        Last updated 05:00 10/08/2012   Reuters GOLDEN SMILE: South Africa's gold medal swimmer Cameron van der Burgh shows off his medal to fans on arrival at the OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg

South African swimmer Cameron van der Burgh says he's a 'victim' of attacks in the Australian media as debate continues over his admission that he used an illegal dolphin kick in winning the Olympic 100-metre breaststroke gold medal in world-record time.

Arriving back in South Africa to a cheering crowd at OR Tambo International Airport on Thursday, van der Burgh smiled and posed for photographs wearing the gold medal he won in London.

Van der Burgh has acknowledged he did the extra kicks - only one is allowed in a 100-metre breaststroke race - but said he was forced to because the rule was not policed properly and illegal kicking had become common.

After the race, Van der Burgh was quoted in the Sydney Morning Herald as saying that he had done extra dolphin kicks - other media reports said perhaps as many as three.

An Australian, Christian Sprenger, finished second in the race in a time of 58.93 seconds, .47 of a second behind van der Burgh's time of 58.46.

'If you're not doing it, you're falling behind,' van der Burgh was quoted as saying.

'It's not obviously - shall we say - the moral thing to do, but I'm not willing to sacrifice my personal performance and four years of hard work for someone that is willing to do it and get away with it.'

On Thursday in Johannesburg, he denied any wrongdoing.

'It's unfortunate, I've been the victim of some Australian press,' he said.

'Throughout my whole swimming career, I've never been disqualified once. I've never been warned once. From the heat to the semis to the finals, there were six different judges that watched every spot, every turn and every stroke and I was cleared. Those people are not there for holiday.'

As the fastest qualifier for the Olympic final, van der Burgh swam in lane four, which was lined with numerous television and still cameras that appeared to document the infraction.

But judges are not allowed to look at television or still-camera images.

Since the race, officials from swim governing body FINA say they are considering the introduction of underwater video for judging.

I fail to see the logic behind his statement,

'It's not obviously - shall we say - the moral thing to do, but I'm not willing to sacrifice my personal performance and four years of hard work for someone that is willing to do it and get away with it.'

Does that mean if they take performance enhancing drugs, you too also have to take more drugs so as not to sacrifice your personal performance and 4years of hard work for someone that is willing to do it and get away with it" ?????????????? It is called cheating Cameron and your heart of hearts know this is true!

@hak

Mate, i also almost threw up when i read the article yesterday.

But after reading it and understanding it, its not quite the same as cheating as we know it... like taking shortcuts, steroids etc etc...

As he said, they all use that dolphin kick to get an extra advantage. I see no problem with it if his opponents (including Phelps and the Jap) also use it.

I see it similarly to the reverse sweep in cricket. The batsman is getting an unfair advantage.

Or a speed walker, who is always supposed to have 1 foot on the ground at all times... I know for a fact that during races, the walkers often have both feet off the ground at some point (which is then deemed as running).

Look, as Cameron said, if they put a ban on it, he would be the first to applaud the ban, but until such time... all swimmers will continue to do it until it stops.

Well done again Cameron!

Australia are pointing fingers everywhere, even at the british athletes and olympic organisers here. They are doing shit and just looking to vent.

Really, feeling sick?

There is no difference to what he is doing and what pocock and mccaw were "allowed" to do at ruck time, before it became so policed as it has this year.  Or a football player who dives to get a penalty. This is sport you take every advantage you can, when you can, if refs are going to let you play in the grey area, play in it and don't ever feel sorry about it. If you don't others will and then you go around pointing fingers and writing stupid arti.... oh wait now I see.

Hey Australia stop being salty about all those silvers, you only did well when you were doping anyway.

@hak

GarethEdwards justenhanced my point...

If Pocock isnt blown up for infringing at ruck time, it doesnt make him a cheat.

He is just pushing boundries.... much like Phelps, Cameron and the Jap do.

I also seem to remember Thorpedo admitting the same thing back when he won his 100m butterfly in 2004. He commented that the extra meter he spent under the water on take off gave him some breathing space between him and his opponents.

So i reckon before this becomes a huuuge issue, lets nip it in the bud.

100% Correct. I have actually specifically watched for that at one of the truning points in one of the men's speed walking events, and none of them had at least one foot on the ground at all times. Least of all the walker that was in front, and they even have marshalls who are supposed to police that. The commentators actually mentioned that there was not even a single yellow flag, let alone a red. They also showed their feet in slow motion, and it was clear as daylight.

I have expected nothing less from the Aussie Press.   Everyone - but their athletes - are to blame for the poor showing of Australia In this Olympics.   Everyone is cheating - but them.   I can remember the howls about drugtaking by Chinese swimmers at the Sydney Olympics - yet after the said Olympics it turned out that many of the pariticpants were in fact usintg drugs manufactured at a drug laboratory in California.   After this laboratory was closed down - a lot of athletes - inclusive of Ian Thorpe - suddenly stopped participating in comnpetitive sport, leaving the impression that there was drugtaking by them too.  Aside from that a number of medals had to be returned because of subsequent tests showing that participants used performance-enhancing drugs.

Drugs are illegal - but there is a limit on underwater swimming - and all swimmers try and get as near as possible to that limit, as it gives them an added advantage.   They are not using illegal practices and what they do does not represent cheating.    If that be the case both Phelps and Lochte will have no titles at all - so stop spitting venom about South Africans and start developing honest sportsmen competing within the rules of competition.    That would help the Aussies.

By the way - there is one issue with regard to drug-taking by Australian sportsmen - the findings are often hushed up and there were cases reported in the Aussie press about that in the past.  At least when somebody ests positive in SA - the matter is dealt with in an open manner.

i find this rather rich coming form the aussies seeing that they are always on the line of cheating.

to me there is a clear line between blatant cheating and bending the rules. one can call that morals but then again if you looks at how the AB conned the world into winning the RWC last year then i think anything is meant to go. if you used the kick to gain an advantage then i say fair go and well done using the system to get your medal. the judges was there and he was allowed. that is what we call street smart. so well played cameron. he was in grey area of the rules nothing wrong with using that to your advantage. maybe the aussies just feel like they could have used if more and thay is why they are crying fowl.

i know of an insider that told said in the public that if anyone knows the level of doping being done by the aussies at beijing ext then they all would have been stripped of there medals a long time ago. doping is rife in australia and is concealed by there federation and is well known by the relevant people in charge of testing. that is the only way a small nation like austrialia can compete with the bigger nations.

cameron is clean of drugs and using drugs to gain a advantage is way more cheating than using a poor old kick to get a few secs n the clock.

gareth edwards post summed it up perfect IMO and i like his take on it, it really is a far cry from the preformance enhancing drugs that people get busted from,,,,cough basson, cough cough chiliboy cough cough,,,,,,LMAO, just kidding boys, at least they were cleared by a judiciary hearing,,,,manned by saffas, o_O,,,LMAO,,, nah i actually beleive their excuse, but i still think that they should have been cleared by nonsaffas???

@carpetmuncher,

ABs conned the world into winning the RWC,,,,sigh, it never gets old, but if my All Blacks had a track record like the Boks, i would be pretty pissed of at my rugby superiors too.

question, do u think the Boks could have beaten the All Blacks at eden park, a fortress like no other where the All Blacks have gone undefeated in the professional era and where the Boks last won in 1936, before WW2???
i cant help but notice that when the Boks played some running rugy against super rugby power houses like fiji and namibia, theres all of a sudden a conspiracy like theory the All Blacks conned the world into winning a RWC.
i guess the NZRU was the one who appointed PDV as ur coach and who benched bismarck for no form and slowmo smit aye???

Sasu

Let me answer your question about the WC quite frankly.   My contention from the word go was that the SA Rugby authorities did what they always do so remarkably well after the 2007 WC - they shot themselves in the foot not only once - but repeatedly.

The appointed a rather clueless coach - whose only real idea was to keep playing the 2007 players in the Springbok team - despite clear indications that a substantial number of players were past their "sell-by" dates.  That included also Smit.    There was no real game plan - zilch  and that was the end of the story.   During the period 2008-2011 the losses by the Springboks increased as times went on - and nobody in their right minds should have given the Springboks a 5% chance of retaining the Cup.

It was very convenient for the South Africans to blame Bryce Lawrence's atrocious refereeing for the mess.    His totally disastrous display showed his absolute deficiencies in refereeing - but it was caught upon by appologists to explain away the inevitable disaster.  I say - and has proven it by my own action - that we have had NO CHANCE in retaining the WC.

Let me be explicit - in the 2007 WC I took leave and went on a holiday to Europe costing me circa $40 000 - a small foirtune.   Between games - I travelled all over Europe from Scotland to Italy, Slovakia and Austria - that being the mian reason for the huge costs.   However, this time around I was invited by friends to stay in Sydney with them and fly to new Zealand for some games.   When I saw what was inevitable in coming. I declined that very nice invitation.   I would not spent money on a lost cause.
