Hi Guys
Been a while. From an Irish perspective we are not as bad as the English defeat or as good as the number rank in the world. We are somewhere in between.
Just prior to the English match, the team was in Portugal for the hardest 9 day training session they ever had (as one player was quoted as saying). They were tired before they started. On saying that England were extremely impressive and are better than Ireland at the moment. The main difference is Billy Vunipola and as long as he is fit they play at a different level. If they have no injuries I think they will win.
On saying that it is the tightest world cup ever. It will be between four teams England, SA, NZ and Ireland. On full strength Ireland is not the strongest team but i think we have a very strong 31. I think SA have improved immeasurably since Rassie took over and have a real chance to win to cup and it is strange to say but i think we fear SA more that the all blacks for the quarter finals.
Of course in the end NZ will just get their s*** together and demolish everyone......

Favourites: England, New Zealand, Wales, Australia, Ireland, South Africa.
That's my pecking order. New Zealand have a good away record over the past 15 tests. South Africa are at 50%. Though Australia are a meagre 28%, they have found a good formula and do perform well at World Cups. Ireland don't progress far, can they do better this year? Wales are usually a very tough nut to crack, with the best defence in the competition. South Africa are not quite there, but have the tools to win two big games. Rassie has implemented a more sensible gameplan than Coetzee, but he has reduced the Boks to a very limited game. They play like the Stormers, the worst attacking team in super rugby. Our record against the NH sides isn't particularly impressive under Rassie either, especially away from altitude.

Wales are not as impressive since they lost Gareth Anscombe and Taulupe Faletau due to injury also they have a terrible success rate against the Southern Hemisphere teams. They have the potential but I don't see them winning.
Australia are getting a lot better this year but I think they will suffer from injuries. I don't think they have the depth in the squad that other teams have for the gruelling competition.
A lot will come down to the weather. If it stays dry then it will less suit the power teams like SA but if you get a monsoon then the grind will suit you guys better.

Back to the question, can we beat an improving Irish team....a match that is pretty much guaranteed now. Yesterday was a disappointing effort from the Boks. Right now Ireland must be feeling good about their chances.
With the subplot that the Irish know Eraser well, perhaps it's time for some new Eraser gimmick. Despite the sycophantic SA press there is no evidence that back play is part of the current plan.
It's amazing that the AB loss has been accepted with such passivity by our rugby press.

Ireland looked pretty good last night Moz but on the other hand sometimes find it hard to string a few good performances together.
Should be an interesting Q Final if that’s how it pans out.
Boks need to pick themselves up from a very tough match and refocus.
One advantage Boks will have is that the Paddies will not have had a tough match (last night’s was supposed to be their toughie) leading into the Q Final and if the Boks can start with a hiss and a roar like against the ABs, they could just be 15-20 pts up and out of sight in the first 20.

True moolaa, but they had a few tough matches before the WC. It hinges in part on how good the general level is in the NH. Which is hard to gauge at this point, it's been ten months since we played NH teams in their own backyard.
Ireland looks better balanced than we are, without some of our raw physicality.
