In the aftermath of an electrifying weekend in the Investec Champions Cup, it's time to spotlight those who dazzled on the field and those who faltered. From stunning Scottish victories to South African stumbles, here’s the lowdown on the heroes and zeroes of the rugby world this past weekend.

Scottish clubs are blazing trails with Edinburgh and Glasgow Warriors both clinching pivotal wins. Edinburgh staged a thrilling comeback to topple Gloucester 26-24, while Glasgow outclassed Clermont Auvergne 33-21, cementing their lead in Pool One and securing a round-of-16 berth. Saracens also made headlines with a strategic 20-14 victory over Toulouse, a win crucial for their campaign in the murky English weather.

Bordeaux-Begles, last season’s champions, continued to demonstrate their dominance by thrashing Northampton Saints 50-28 in what was a repeat of the previous year’s final. Standouts Salesi Rayasi and Cameron Woki each bagged a hat-trick, underscoring Bordeaux's formidable forward play and set-piece prowess.

Leinster squeaked by La Rochelle 25-24 in a nail-biter at Aviva Stadium, exacting revenge for previous Champions Cup final defeats. Replacement fly-half Harry Byrne emerged as Leinster's hero, slotting the decisive penalty in the dying moments of the match. Meanwhile, Ronan O’Gara’s absence from the post-match press conference spoke volumes, leaving an assistant to face the music after a heart-wrenching loss.

"It’s a bitter pill to swallow,"

admitted the stand-in for an absent O'Gara.

"May @SaleSharksRugby finally rebrand as the Sale Tuna. A tuna is a fierce fish. Let us unite behind the Tuna!"

tweeted the owner of the Durban-based Sharks, Marco Masotti, in a bold pre-match taunt. However, his words backfired spectacularly as Sale Sharks triumphed 26-10 in a charged encounter, forcing Masotti to eat his words.

South African clubs, in contrast, had a weekend to forget. The Bulls, Sharks, and Stormers all suffered defeats, with the Bulls conceding nine tries in a high-scoring 61-49 debacle against Bristol Bears. The Stormers, resting key players, were decimated 61-10 by Harlequins, resembling 'lambs to the slaughter' at Twickenham Stoop.

Toulouse faces an uphill battle to stay in contention after another defeat, this time a 20-14 loss to Saracens. With their backs against the wall, they must now regroup and prepare for a critical showdown against Sale Sharks. Despite the presence of their talismanic leader Antoine Dupont, Toulouse couldn't find the magic needed to turn the tide.
