Oh dear. Rugby revolution over. Back to square one for England, poor dears.

Dear England. What on earth were you up to on the training ground last week?

Eddie Jones' mob were back to their clunky habits in defeat against Ireland, their Six Nations campaign involving one mildly impressive scoreline against Scotland, where rugby is about as popular as Brexit.

The phoney war is also over, thank goodness, with New Zealand and England completing an 18-all draw in the consecutive victory category.

I mean no disrespect to the England team, who can only play to their limited skill capacity. But the maelstrom of accolades for such a stilted team, considering the extent of New Zealand's dominance for a long time and the rise of Ireland as classy challengers, has been insulting. The hoopla has been ridiculous.

The unseemly rugby super power clamour to add a New Zealand-England test to the 2017 season should also come to a shuddering halt - there was no genuine point to it, and even less so now. It was a fanciful sugar rush which has been nailed by the bitter truth about Jones and his over-rated team.

England - with one victory in the last 15 tests against New Zealand - are light years away from living up to the hype. England aren't even the second best team in the world, despite what the primitive ranking system claims. Ireland, under the astute coaching of Joe Schmidt, deserve that respect.

You only had to watch the one man Hurricane Ardie Savea ripping the Highlanders apart to know that the All Blacks' future is in great hands. There has never been an England forward who could play like that. It's not England's fault, but it is the truth.

England made a sow's ear out of an imaginary silk purse in Dublin, and the men in white looked dazed at the end.

White is a great colour to wear for muscle-bound rugby people who want to look menacing. But it also looks a bit cringey when things go wrong. England were wrecking balls in chains. A lot of them looked like overstuffed plastic shopping bags in desperate need of a trolley.

England under Jones aren't much different to England under every other coach they've had. On a good day - and I will long remember their outstanding 2003 victory in Wellington as one of the finest test match performances ever - they are a beast, but those occasions are few and far between against skilled opponents.

Dublin was a magnificent rugby occasion, again, with the crowd in stirring form as Six Nations crowds always are. The Home Countries and France will never overtake New Zealand in rugby quality, where a unique cultural and gene pool mix, and national obsession, produces extraordinary results almost all of the time. But the northerners beat New Zealand hands down when it comes to atmosphere and occasion.

What the northern rugby mob might not understand is that in order to be super good at test rugby, you can't really enjoy it. You only have to hear Grant Fox agonising over rugby detail, or an Eden Park crowd agonising over a World Cup final, to know that. Rugby is such an impossible game to play well that it must be a crusade to do so. Just doing a lot of weightlifting doesn't cut it.

But the European crowds and magnificent stadiums are brilliant, and can turn battering ram-ball into epic battles. It's just as well when, with everything on the line, the supposed second best team in the world doesn't come close to scoring a try as history allegedly beckons.

Milky white England froze against Irish cream. As almost always happens to England under pressure, they lose the ability to pass the ball smartly. When the heat goes on, they display more shovels than Mitre 10.

Even their lineouts unravelled. They were only at their most fluid when spotting a chance to hit Ireland's great No. 10 Johnny Sexton with late and high tackles, a tactic out of the stone ages. Come on Eddie. Surely you had more to offer than that.

Last week's victory over Scotland was a false read, which added to the false read. The massive Twickenham victory whipped up the premature triumphalism which inevitably brings England down.

While their union was insulting the Barbarians in order to issue a November challenge to New Zealand, it looked as though Jones and his men were reading the wrong papers.

And what about those rankings? Schmidt's Ireland deserve to be recognised as the second best team in the world, not England. Ireland play the game with verve and guile and it is they who have mounted the best challenge to the undisputed champs.

England are still in a cave, and they will drag Jones into the recesses before he ever encourages them out into the light.

Before you all start chanting "arrogant kiwis" Chris Rattue is a Pom.
Will watch the game later but it sounds like a bit of a bore. Plenty of articles ripping the over inflated egos of Eddie & his team. Credit to Eddie he blames himself for the loss.

England will never get a better chance this century .A combination of weaker than usual SH opposition a heap of home games luck and an upward trend in ability plus not playing the ABs created a 'perfect storm ' for the poms which to their credit they made full use of .That 'hissing " noise in the middle of the night was Eddies Ego deflating to merely mammoth proportions .Congrats to both sides .

This article irritates me beyond belief.
He says "no disrespect to England." Yet he takes every possible cheap shot at what is still a very good team playing solid rugby.
Yes I know the writer is English  and that retro-cynicism is part of their way of life but that's just another level of annoyance this article musters in me.
So unless they went ahead and achieved what no other team before then has, they are useless and back to their plucky best. Absolute bull. They still won the six nation's didn't they...for two years in a row now.
Then he tries to diminish their accomplishment by hinting at how poor the competition is and how unpopular rugby is in Scotland blah blah blah.
Doesn't matter to me that England lost but i just find it abhorrent when bottom feeders like this think they have the right to slate a group of men who achieve more before breakfast each day than he has in his entire life.
Ireland just played better rugby yesterday, as they did in the US against the ABs. Nothing more nothing less.
Would be wonderful if journalists still had a smidge of integrity.

Sorry oaks I have been too busy and didn't watch the match.Great pity England didn't break the record of course but congrats to them on an excellent run.
I guess the England loss saved the poor kbbs from a complete mental  breakdown and the destruction of all they think they are. There would have not been enough tissues in the world to comfort the snowflakes. Bwahahahhaahahahahahaha
By the way, BREXIT is far more popular in Scotland than the elite globalist MSM would have you believe.  Sturgeons desire to leave the UK is polliung badly. The odious dyke is losing on all these issue. This perverted freak wants children to be able to choose their gender at age 4.  I need say no more. Scotland sure has been duped into voting for this freak. However the Tory opposition leader in Scotland is also a lesbo so one wonders what has been happening to the Scots being governed by such!
Beeno with his finger on the pulse and a clear and steady eye and applying great and very sound common sense. Unlike some mamparas here of curse!

Rattue is usually an irritant & I rarely agree with him. He likes to take a contrarian view of things - I think this is a way to boost his audience. He normally is negative about the ABs, i.e. takes a Beeno like view of them (but with a modicum of intelligence which is often lacking in Beeno's rants).

The author waited for a mistep before exposing his stance on english rugby.

Even though, from the beginning, it was clear for anyone with a heart for rugby that the english rugby project was empty, a fishline to hook all those who desire to believe that playing winner rugby is otherwise than playing NZ rugby.

As expected, excellent men try to raise the standard of the english performance by putting the irish wins against NZ and EN on the same level.

They are not. Relapse is always a possibility. Yet that possibility was smaller for the english game as they were motivated by the record, had fresh tabs on their opponent, prepared and played in the familiar 6N environment.

English has been playing loser rugby. They will keep playing loser rugby. This kept screaming loud during the whole tournament with unconvincing, ref favoured wins all over the tournament. The apex was against Italy, with an english squad, recognizing the ref as their saviour and asking him a piece of advice to overcome the italian trick.

While Ireland did a favour to the world, that vaporware of rugby is not put to death. The salesman in charge of the english squad is going to start the hype of that one win against NZ. They will  challenge NZ, tell they have learned from their defeat against IR, and got stronger.

Excellent men know the drill.

We haven't heard so much about Ireland's great achievement as giant killers. There is a lot more written about the Poms loss but Ireland showed the world that they are really good & on any given day teams at that level can knockoff the top two teams. Once again congrats to them.

If IR is a giant killer, then WA is a killer of giant killers. Trump logics. Or exactly Trumpian absence of logics.

All that bunch of countries play loser rugby. The most common outcome in rugby games is winner/loser. No extra is needed to win or lose than playing a rugby game.

EN beat FR that beat WA that beat IR that beat EN.

Countries playing loser rugby. Nothing more.

If I had lost 40 to 29 on a Neutral Field to this same Irish team, I might be a little circumspect about the Poms losing 13 to 9 on an Irish pitch. Cloudy ... if this was a thud, what was Soldiers Field?

Just an excuse - it was the conditions being the reason for the English loss.   The conditions apparently according to you does not apply to SA teams - so what else is new?

I dont know how long he has lived in NZ. If he's turned Kiwi or not, it makes no difference to me. It's just a d1ck move for a journalist to celebrate such an unfortunate failure when success could have seen a world record broken. To then insult the team and it's manager who have done nothing but work hard and promote rugby in England. Well that's just the icing on the cake.
And I'm a nuetral in this.Personally I'd have been happy if England did it only in so much as I'm happy when a new 100m record is set. A positive human achievement.
The same way that we hold players to a higher standard because they are in the public eye, journalists in my view have a similar responsibility.
We also have total sell out journalists in SA. Guys who would rather avoid the truth than tell it because heaven forbid they don't please their corporate overlords.
On the one side there's a pay check and on the other a journalist's responsibility. Pity that there are so few who are able to achieve both.
