It's going to be a difficult for the All Black selectors to decide which outside backs to take to the World Cup.

We are spoilt for choice as it is and then there is the added issue of Beauden Barrett and Colin Slade clouding the picture. You'd have to say that both look comfortable in the backfield and would have a strong case to play there.

We all know 12 weeks is a long time in professional rugby and a lot can happen between now and the All Blacks naming their first squad. But I don't think form is going to be too much of an issue for any of the players in the mix to go.

They are all good enough players so I think injury is the only thing that will change the picture.

To my mind, as we sit right now, there are two certainties in the outside backs. Julian Savea and Ben Smith are players the All Blacks must have.

Savea is a game-changer and the All Blacks will always need one of those.

Smith is a gifted, all-round footballer who I like on the wing or at fullback. I don't think it matters which position he plays - although I think he is wasted at centre - because he's able to have a positive influence on the game from either.

Having played in Ireland for four years, I know what conditions will be like on that side of the world at that time of year. So it's important to factor in the weather and style of rugby the All Blacks are likely to encounter at the World Cup.

The Six Nations this year hasn't delivered a lot of tries. The various teams are playing more for territory and look a bit cautious and fearful of making mistakes.

Israel Dagg is a player I really like when he's on form and backing himself to run. But he also has skills that could be invaluable at the World Cup. He's got a huge boot, is good under the high ball and has plenty of experience - all of which are important.

The All Blacks will be wary about running themselves into trouble from deep in the big games. There will be counter-attack opportunities but it's knowing when and how to take them.

That's why I would be happy with a back three of Dagg, Smith and Savea. But I'd be just as happy if it was Cory Jane, Smith and Savea. Jane is another with experience and the ability to cover wing and fullback.

It's obviously going to be a difficult job for the selectors making the final choice, but it's not something the players can get caught up thinking about too much during Super Rugby.

They won't be oblivious to the bigger picture and lingering in the back of their minds will be thoughts like, 'what if I have a bad game? What if someone else in my position is playing really well?'

But they can't get caught up thinking too far ahead. They have to play their natural game, fit in with their team's patterns and be confident that if they do, they will get the rewards.

Good problem to have as with injuries any player can be out for weeks. We have other options also but these are the top tier backfield guys. As this year progresses the second string guys will help pick themselves.

The AB's  have a wide variety of backline players to choose from - but in some cases the performances of some players this year in Super 15 was hugely disappointing.  There are just too many balls lieing around on the field of play for other teams to exploit.
Lets look at the situation objectively:-
Full back
The top choice for me remains Ben Smith - but I think that Hansen may use him on the wing - leaving a huge problem at full back.   Maybe they should consider Piutau as their full back in future.  Dagg has not played this year yet - but he is a diabolically poor defender.
First Choice  -  Ben SmithSecond Choice  -  Charles Piutau
Wings
The only really top wing the AB's have is Julian Savea.   There are some pretenders around - Corey Jane looked good for the Hurricanes and I am also impressed by Lowe of the Chiefs, but are they really the top class wings the AB's need?  The rest are not all that good.
The alternatives are to play either Ben Smith or Charles Piutau as one wing and the other at full back.
Wings   Julian Savea and Corey Jane
Centers
There are to my mind two outstanding no 13 centers available to the AB's in Malakai Fekitoa and Charlie Ngatai.  Conrad Smith was very very average in the two games he played this year and we will have to see how he plays for the rest of the year in Super 15.
No 13 -  Malakai Fekitoa
If all the hype is set aside the inside center berth is not as obvious as it may seem.  S-B Williams yesterday was definitely not up to standard and he is coming up against Damian de Allende this coming week.   Danger signals all over the show - if De Allender does to him what he did to Francois Steyn yesterday - then there are indeed problems for the AB's in that position.
No 12   -  S-B Williams (?)
Flyhalf
If I was Hansen I wiould pull out all my hair thinking of th flyhalf performances this year:-
*   Dan Carter was nothing more than poor in his only game this year and has since been out with an injury.
*   Aaron Cruden was an embarrassment yesterday and he is the panicky type that goes to pieces when under pressure - poor in defense.
*   Beaudon Barrett thus far this year was just about above average - definitely not good - and he also goes to pieces like Cruden - poor in defense as well.
*   Damien MacKenzie is a star in teh making - I would say the natural successor of Dan Carter.
My choice at 10  - Damian MacKenzie
Scrumhalfs
I do not know what to say - my choices would be between Aaron Smith and TJ Perenera - but both has been questionable this year.
I would  say that despite the hype there seems to be problems in various positions and I would not gloat about the abundance of talent available until such time as the talented players start to perform in line wit h their reputed talents.

Individual players are only pieces of the AB puzzle so if they are not playing really well in their individual teams in s15. When they get into the ABs we will see the synergies.

The last time I saw Cruden playing at flyhalf in a test was against the Springboks in Wellington - and he was an embarrassment.   The last time I saw Carter in a test was against the Scots and he was worse.   Barrett was extremely questionable in the latest test at Ellis Park as well.   Talking about going to pieces - all three have.

CleverMike: they have the talent & good coaching at the AB level will iron out the problems. We also have Slade who has developed into a good 10 and can play other positions. It's good to have a coach that you have faith in

Ou maaaikie We ben smith, carol jane, conrad smith, cruden, aaron smith, etc etc are all small backs and even Dagg is no giant.
When the wee bas are going back in the forwards as seems likely how will these little fellows cope with the pressure.
The abs have a problem in that they have needed to move on but havent. Very unfortunately we have exactly the same problem. Both Hansen and Meyer have stuck to players they know but who are not what they once were. Both coaches are running out of time. Can they get things on track.

Really true - like with us the AB's have created a smoke screen hiding the deficiencies of some of their players.
We got Meyer who thinks that players like Matfield, Alberts and another few of the elderly and useless is the answer.   They are not and that is a fact.
Hansen has a problem too - he dare not drop Carter, McCaw and a few of the less effective players - the hype of those players are incredible  and now is stuck with them.  You can see the attitude of the NZ public clearly on this site - some of the holies of the holies is above criticism - so Hansen is stuck with the old, lame and useless as well.

Clevermike and Beeno I'll take an ex AB's, especially the worlds best ever fullbacks, analysis of NZ backs scenario over 2 South African posters  biased analysis any day.

There is one thing I am not - and that is biased.   I write the truth and may be controversial at times - but I am not blindly following any player based on his performances - not on his reputation.
If you write anything negative about Carter and McCaw according to NZ supporters you are committing  the deadly sin of lese majestee.
I have been deadly honest about what I wrote above.   I rate Ben Smith exceptionally highly as a full back.   He probably is one of the best full backs in world rugby, but there are serious competition on that level.   Dagg was brilliant in 2012 - but this si 2015 and over the last two years he was not really exceptional.  Matter of fact Smith is a much better full back than Dagg is at present.
For the rest I made my assessment on performances of the AB backline players this season.   I was especially disappointed by the performance of Williams yesterday.   He was not up to standard and that is a fact.
I think that the AB's has exceptional talented backline p layers  - but if the players play like they did yesterday and even earlier in Super 15 - then the talent is there - the application is missing.    For the sake of the AB's I hope that element is sorted out in future.

Piutau is a must, the guy is always dangerous with ball in hand. I don't rate Corey Jane. Smith is far better than TJ.
I'd select the following backline:
15. Smith 14. Piutau 13. Fekitoa 12. SBW 11. Savea 10. Carter 9. Smith

Yoiu have an excellent backline there - but I am afraid Carter's days are numbered.   I don't know whether you remember that blond kid -Damian MacKenzie - who was the best player in the AB Under 20 side.   He is a 10 - but also play as full back.   Watch out for that guy - he is playing for the Chiefs now and started at 10 for them in their first match - really the future replacement of Dan Carter.

The real difference between my beloved country that cries more than it laughs and NZ is that selectors might slightly err now and again BUT they still arrive with the trophy...cabinets according to Sasuke need a carpenter to extend.

What I've generally noticed with AB fans they hardly ever throw shots at selections (yeah, they have their choices) but once their team is chosen they support them....however Beeno, they trade in their old models for new.

Matfield, in NZ would be put in the show room to remind fans of the past but not used.

Like an old Rolls Royce...that's been superb but cannot compete with Ferraris and Masseratis or old Landrovers or whatever of the classics depending on their useages...must be put into history.

Great respect, I really have sincerely for Victor, he's the old man like Mozart who can afford a face lift and thinks he looks like Di Caprio or even Brad Pitt

Dunno Seb. They stuck with Thorne for a long long time - well past his sell by date imo.
