Glad to hear......it wasn't always like it is right now, it's been quite amazing to see how they've turned things around. Believe me when I tell you it is a very different place to what it used to be. As a matter of fact SA was far more sophisticated than Oz going back to when I migrated.
Refresh my memory....you first visited relo's in Canberra before heading to Sydney? Would that be correct?

I enjoyed the thought of you looking over your shoulder.
I spent time on Batema ns beach and canoed on the Clyde River and enjoyed Christmas with my brother on a farm just outside Mollymook.
Played some golf on the course there, did a bit of gym with him and went for a run every morning ... drank lots of wine and ate till I bust. Musta picked up 5kg easy.
I would have loved to go see a lot more and perhaps one day I will. Tour the country I mean.
I was horrified to hear his accent. He turned into an Ozzie. He even supports the Wallabies.
Disgraceful.
It was awesome.

Sounds like agreat time but I suspect CC those runs and gym work were of limited duration!
I think many here wonder at times how it would be to live in a decent well run country. No country of course is perfect but that South Africa survives is thanks to a core of competent hard working and enterprising people still here. The country survives dispite the corrupt incompetent and race obsessed anc.

We toured Oz in 2001......very impressed with the country and the folks there.Loved Queensland and the area around Brisbane also enjoyed many a beer in Perth with a bunch of Saffers.
Thought about Oz before we moved to Canada but for business reasons we headed North.
CleanCut you are correct most of the Saffers in Oz are Wallabie supporters......cannot blame them can we.

What really impressed me is their focus and love of kids playing sport, out and about, with sun block on and big floppy hats ... and their dogs.
Everywhere I went someone was walking a dog or running with one and there were kids in parks playing cricket with mom and dad.
Over here some jungle bunny jumps out from behind a bush and shoves a pistol in your face.
There's no comparison.

I've been to Batesman's Bay and a few other beaches around what's called the South Coast, I haven't been to Mollymook but from the photo's I googled it's made my bucket list.
And yes you're right about open spaces and activities in surburbia some are laid out with soccer fields, practice cricket strips, basketball nets and free government learn to swim programmes for kids.
Melbourne doesn't have as many outdoor activities as Sydney but they have great indoor sports facilities.

I should have moved to Australia when I was younger - had opportunities to go in the 1960's and 1970's, but never took the opportunities because of family reasons. Have been regretting that ever since.
Have been to Australia a couple of times and hope to go again this year to see my close friends in Sydney and Brisbane.
Will always love my country - all my life long I put my country ahead of everything else and I am too old to change now - but things are getting worse all the time. Get really despondent when I read the newspapers and realize what all is going wrong. But I will always support the SA sportsmen in any code of sport.

How sad it is that so many of us are not Home loving SA for what it should be and what it gave us.
It will always be Home, I am a very proud SA'n but its just so sad that its not Home in the true sense.
I'd love to be waking up in sunny happy SA every morning of my life blessed with the security that all is well......but that is only a dream.
The reports I get from family and friends is always so negative......its only us visitors who get a taste and walk away with a sense that things are not that bad.......but if we lived there we would soon change our tune.
All very sad.......I live with the guilt of not seeing my mom, sister and nephew enough......its been years in fact......its just not right.

My uncle emigrated to Australia in the '70's...I was about eighteen months old. He married an Australian, but of a whirlwind thing really. Matter of months and they married and he left us to go to the other side of the world ! He was in banking, she was a Nurse, but he retrained as a Vet and owns his own practice...became very popular there; everyone wanted to see the " English Vet " He's about to retire, his wife has been retired for years. All they do is Cruise the world ! They live just outside of Melbourne, big plot of land, amongst the Market Gardens, but he's selling up and having somewhere smaller built, also selling the Business. He did want to come back home, when the kids got to an age when they were needing decent schooling; he didn't think much to the quality of education there. But something always cropped up. They have all done ok for themselves, regardless !
My sister, brother in law and niece have all been in New Zealand for the past two years. My niece's boyfriend was an Engineer and was asked to go over, so she went with him and my brother in law was sent with his company too.My brother in law had always wanted to go and was more or less planning to settle there, my sister was not so keen on that idea, so I am told ( I have nothing to do with them any more ) However, they have hated there time there so much that they have cut short the length of the trip and are due home very soon. Cloudy, that was my point in mentioning my family....two experiences and two differing views. I can offer nothing on this as I have nothing to do with any of the parties involved. All I know is that I total agree with you, one does not stay where one is not happy and, as a trip to NZ is something my brother in law had wanted his whole life, he can at least go to his grave knowing he gave it a shot ! Personally, I am sorry it didn't work out for them all...if only for selfish reasons Oh, just to add....my sister and her husband are very successful, it has nothing to do with work or money. But, as I said, my niece is very happy and intends on making her life in your country, if she can. It seems her NZ friends are more than happy to keep her.

Den we had a plant in Strathmerton...not exactly a garden spot. A little bleak. But the people were nice. Australia has great cities and the areas close to the coast are pleasant, but it's not the Cape.
I am a little concerned though about Becs' story that everybody wanted to see an English vet in preference to an Aussie doctor.

He found that the Staff didn't turn up for work nor did they do their work properly.He had issues when he went on a nature trek and realised the creatures he went to see had all been eradicated ( I already know of the poison drops etc ) He and my sister both had issues that their dog was poisoned on an alleged safe beach and the Vet wasn't too bothered about it. The dog survived but it was rather worrying. He has had problems trying to explain the fact that Possums do not, nor have they ever been, indigenous in Great Britain and that they were transported to NZ to start the ( disgusting ) Fur Trade from Australia. This was not necessarily even done by the English but possibly by the Scots. However, we get the blame, as always ! One thing that is certain is we have never had Possums here !!! My sister left one position, I believe, as she was not going to put up with the level of racial abuse directed at her. She also found that her job was rather different in terms of the capabilities of her students, she is a Lecturer. The house was far too cold, I'm told ! She wasn't pleased with the lack of shops ? A culture shock was probably how best to describe the experience for them both !
I also believe that they were appalled when their German friends were racially abused during a Rugby match. They said that was just awful.
As I say, I do not have any contact with my sister or her family any more, I only know what has been said to the rest of my family.
All I can say is that I think my brother in law had an idealised view of how life would be and did not know much of the struggles that face many in NZ before he went there. Ozz is a great place,bar the flies and dangerous fauna. We get hot here at the southern tip of Africa, but I hear the Ozzies can beat os on that one as well.Here in Sa ffa we have worse things than flies though.

I am sorry that it has been a bad trip for some of my relatives, but that is their issue and others do not feel the same way.
I have never left my country, so I cannot speak of anywhere else. All I know is that, if I had gone elsewhere and disliked it, I would have left there and that would be that. But at least I would have tried.
Things are getting worse here in England and they should not have been allowed to get this way. I also fear unrest as the population gets sickened by the lack of Schools, Hospitals and worsening infrastructure....all things that should not have been allowed to get in such a terrible state.
But we still do not face anything like the struggles many do on a daily basis....as we always say, we don't know we are born ! And some of us do care about the rest of you and we have always tried to do what we can to help....but it is a very small gesture, I know

Glad you had a great holiday in OZ, CC...those beaches look awesome. I have a son in South Australia, Adelaide...also awesome especially Port Lincoln...Ol'Maaik, yes I also missed the boat to Australia some years back...getting too old now...also was thinking of Argentina too...that's also a great country with wonderful people...oh well it wasn't meant to be...sigh!

Moz, There are some posts I just don't bother to read.
Although Strathmerton is bleak, my Google search throws up nine beaches in close proximity....interesting.
I'm planning on going around Australia, probably take me about a year, there is no sense in rushing....the South Coast alone with it's wonderful rivers, lakes and beaches would take a good 6 weeks.

Becs Sorry to hear your family and their friends were treated in such an appalling manner, but to be honest I'm not surprised. I have experienced racial abuse by groups of idiots but never a singular moron. My wife is 3rd generation NZ born Asian and she is constantly told to go back to where she came from. NZ is certainly no paradise and I suppose those type of morons make up for the lack of natural dangerous wildlife. Beeno funnily enough appreciated your comment for its comedic value...well played.

Polyboy, that is very kind of you. As I say, I do not have any experience of this myself, so just have to go by what I hear. But I know it has been a blow to my brother in law. He always wanted to go to NZ and really did wish to emigrate there. But it is not to be.My nieces ex boyfriend grew up in NZ. He is SA, was adopted by Brits who travelled the world with work and he spent some years in NZ. He said the change he experienced going back was immens e, and a change not for the better, he felt. Again, his opinion.My niece, however, loves it and loves her new life !

Cloudy, yeah Oz is a different kettle of fish. My brother says they have a pub in Sydney where there is a sign banning Maoris and Polynesians from being served. However they (the ozzies) do get some leeway cause my sister is married to an Ozzie guy who is quite good. So like anywhere you get the good and the bad. I live in the US deep south where race issues were BAD but have improved considerably though is not perfect but in terms of racism Christchurch is a pretty bogan place with a racist attitude, however they leave me alone, I suppose because I'm Polynesian and above average size but I give it to my wife she gives it back as good as she gets it. Funnily enough a black guy in in the States thought I was white because I was "foreign, had an accent and must be rich", even though I was almost as dark as him.
