Willie 8/ Hogg 6

Kolbe 6/ Duhan 7

Am 5/Daly 5

Dud Allende 6/ Henshaw  7

Mapimpi 6/ Watson 7

Pollard 8.5/ Biggar 5

Faf 6/Price 5

Ox 6.5/ Furlong 6.5

Bongi 6.5/ Cowan-Dickie 3

Nyakane 5.5/ Sutherland 4.5

Etzebeth 9/ Itoje 9

Mostert 6/ Wyn-Jones 3

Kolisi 7/ Curry 6

Dud Toit 6/ Lawes 8

Kwagga 6/ Conan6

Erasmus/ Nienaber complex 5/ Gatland 7

You will note that the Lions are lined up against the player they were competing against….not necessarily by number. It’s intentional. Etzebeth had a huge first half and his try stopping tackle on Duhan was splendid….even though the play was called back.

Faf had a relatively poor outing….but Willie and Pollard were terrific.

Itoje was terrific for the Lions, ripping the ball out of Du Toit’s hands on occasion.

The Lions won this test with mauling and high kicks. Our coaches were unable to counter these most basic of tactics. We ourselves seemed to have no game plan.

But mostly this game was lost on conditioning….the chicken run came home to roost.

He ran through open field when oddly no Lion went to tackle him. He botched picking up the ball in front of an open line. Itoje ripped the ball off him. He was penalized several times. He made one good forcing tackle on Henshaw when the centre got high ball and man.

To me a 6 is about right.

Did I miss something?

So tell me….did he pressure the back of the lineout, did he break tackles, did he win the ball on the deck. Specifics please.

Dud Toit missed the most tackles in the game and conceded the most penalties. Those are the facts.

Actually your mind was made up a long time ago.

Henshaw made more metres in 7 runs than Dud Allende made in 13. That said Allende was not the the reason we lost.

Flab Malherbe was the worst player on the pitch. I hope his father has a decent explanation.
He did have Covid, for someone that is unfit it would probably take longer to recover match fitness.

And the Planet Rugby ratings are very similar to mine:

Take a look at South Africa’s player ratings following their 22-17 defeat to the British and Irish Lions in Cape Town on Saturday.

15 Willie le Roux: Threatened the Lions defence with some strong runs in the opening half and was safe under the high ball. Showed good pace when he crossed the whitewash early in the second half but that effort was disallowed as he was in front of the kicker. 7/10

14 Cheslin Kolbe: Was tested with some bombs but was brave under the high ball. We didn’t see his dazzling feet giving the tourists’ defence major issues though as when he received the ball, he was met by a wall of red defenders. 6

13 Lukhanyo Am: Had few attacking opportunities but made a statement of intent with a big hit on Elliot Daly early on. That set the tone for the rest of the first half as the Boks dominated the opening 40 minutes. Good decision to kick ahead in the build-up to that disallowed try from Le Roux but his biggest impact was on defence. 6

12 Damian de Allende: Had a quiet game by his standards and although he took the ball into contact with some strong carries, the Munsterman was kept in check by the Lions defence. Also went over for a disallowed try, in the second half, after a handling error from Kolbe in the build-up. 5

11 Makazole Mapimpi: Hardly saw the ball but when it did come his way, he showed his class with a couple of impressive runs. One of those saw him combining brilliantly with Pieter-Steph du Toit and when he was held up close to the try-line, he did well to offload to Faf de Klerk, who scored the Boks’ only try. 6

10 Handré Pollard: The Bok pivot had a great opening half in his 50th Test and dictated the pace of the game during that time. Caught the eye with some clever runs during that period and gave his team a deserving 12-3 lead at half-time with four penalties. Went off the boil after the interval and missed a couple of shots at goal. 6

9 Faf de Klerk: The Boks won the territorial game in the opening half and it was largely down to De Klerk, who impressed with the way he mixed things up behind his pack. Kept the Lions guessing with accurate box-kicks and clever offloads to his forwards. Scored a well-taken try but was less influential in the second half. 7

Blind alleys

8 Kwagga Smith: Had a busy game but although he caught the eye with some darting runs, several of those were down blind alleys and he made little headway. Also conceded some penalties at the breakdown and when it was in goal-kicking range it resulted in points for the visitors. 5

7 Pieter-Steph du Toit: Came to the fore with his usual all-action style of play but like most of his team-mates, he went quieter as the game progressed. Continued to give his all and emptied the tank, especially on defence, but was kept in check on attack during the latter stages. 6

6 Siya Kolisi: The Springbok captain was in the thick of the action and although he gave his all, his efforts didn’t have the desired effect as he struggled to impose himself on his opponents. Made little impact at the breakdowns. 5

5 Franco Mostert: Like the rest of the world champions’ starting XV, Mostert had his tail up in the first half. The second half was a different story, however, and apart from winning his lineout balls and making tackles at close quarters, he had a quiet game and was eventually replaced by Lood de Jager. 5

4 Eben Etzebeth: The Bok enforcer was at the forefront of his side’s forward onslaught for the full 80 minutes. Made a nuisance of himself on the Lions throw-ins at the lineouts and won his own ball. Was his usual busy self in the tight exchanges with strong carries and big hits. 8

3 Trevor Nyakane: Nothing special to report. Did what was expected of him in the scrums and was a willing ball carrier but hardly made an impact in that department. Did well at the breakdown where he won a crucial turnover on the half-hour mark. Yanked off at half-time. 6

2 Bongi Mbonambi: Another one who was replaced midway through this Test but apart from his core duties he didn’t catch the eye. Conceded a penalty just before half-time after a high tackle on Alun Wyn Jones but Daly was off target with the resulting kick. 5

1 Ox Nché: Took the ball into contact on a few occasions in the first half and gained good ground. Also stood up well in the scrums although he conceded a penalty in the 35th minute at the set-piece but that didn’t prove too costly as Dan Biggar missed the shot at goal. 7

Replacements

All the home side’s substitutions were made in the second half and if truth be told it did not have the desired effect. Their much vaunted World Cup-winning front-row of Steven Kitshoff, Malcolm Marx and Frans Malherbe came off second best to their Lions counterparts in the second half while Lood de Jager struggled to make an impact. 4

I think those ratings are different to 365.

https://rugby365.com/tournaments/british-irish-lions/player-ratings-champions-no-more/
I will write mine up shortly. I usually find 365 is similar to my ratings.

Jan de Koning rates the South African players!

15 Willie le Roux
Did not have too many chances with the ball in hand and had a shocking day on defence – making just one of the five tackles he attempted.
3/10

14 Cheslin Kolbe
The ball did not flow his way in the first half and he worked hard in the second half, without much reward. Made his tackles, but lost the aerial battle.
4/10

13 Lukhanyo Am
Huge early hit that won a turnover that set a marker and continued to make all his tackles and was one of the team’s most impressive performers.
7/10

12 Damian de Allende
Conceded an offside penalty, but made plenty of tackles and won a couple of first-half turnovers. Some strong carries and was his team’s most productive backline player.
7.5/10

11 Makazole Mapimpi
Was not a game for wings on the attack. His defence was beyond reproach and he chased hard.
6/10

10 Handre Pollard
Was great under the high ball in the first half and provided good support at fullback. However, his goal-kicking let him down a bit and he also missed a crucial tackle.
5/10

9 Francois de Klerk
Some good out of hand kicking, for good territorial gains, and a couple of decent clearance kicks. He was solid on defence – missing just one tackle – and won a turnover.
6/10

8 Albertus Smith
Excellent work at a defensive breakdown. Initially good at kick-receives and made plenty of carries. Made most of his tackles, missing just one. Conceded three second-half penalties.
6/10

7 Pieter-Steph du Toit
His workrate and physicality was a big factor, but then got overzealous and conceded a crucial penalty late in the second half.
6/10

6 Siyamthanda Kolisi (captain)
Played a much tighter game and did not shirk his responsibilities – making seven tackles, without missing one. Conceded a couple of penalties.
6.5/10

5 Franco Mostert
Truly Mr Dependable. You won’t see him, much in the open play, but hit plenty of ruck, made seven tackles and missed just one./
6.5/10

4 Eben Etzebeth
Dominated Itoje in the contact areas in the first half and made a handful of carries. His best work was on defence – 10 tackles made, two missed and one turnover won.
7/10

3 Trevor Nyakane
Solid in the scrums and made all his tackles. A couple of carries, without making much ground.
6/10

2 Mbongeni Mbonambi
Didn’t make any ground with his three carries and seemed a bit passive. Made all his tackles.
5/10

1 Retshegofaditswe Nche
Really good workrate and a number of strong carries. Made his tackles.
6/10

Replacements:

16 Malcolm Marx (on for Mbonambi at half-time)
Did not have the impact with the ball in hand that you would expect, but made eight tackles without missing one.
6/10

17 Steven Kitshoff (on for Nche at half-time)
Worked hard off the ball and made nine tackles, without missing one. Struggled in the scrums though – normally a strength of his.
5.5/10

19 Frans Malherbe (on for Nyakane at half-time)
Conceded a crucial scrum penalty and made just one tackle. Was quiet outside of the set pieces.
4/10

19 Lodewyk de Jager (on for Mostert, 62 mins)
He looked to get involved, but failed to make an impact – both with the ball in hand and on defence.
5/10

20 Rynhardt Elstadt (on for Smith, 62 mins)
The only time you noticed him was when he ran on as a replacement. Made just one tackle in his almost 20 minutes on the field.
4/10

21 Herschel Jantjies (on for De Klerk, 74 mins)
Not enough time to rate.

22 Elton Jantjies (on for Pollard, 70 min)
Not enough time to rate.

23 Damian Willemse (on for Le Roux, 66 mins)
One carry that looked threatening and one solid tackle in his cameo.
5/10

You are right Shark, those ratings are from Planet Rugby, much superior to the Jan De Koning ratings which are a joke…..Willie was way better than a 3. The man is clueless.

He rates Pollard a 5….having made 53 metres in 6 carries dangerously breaking the line. Dud Allende who had one idea to charge into Biggar made 38 metres in 13 carries and gets a 7.5. I also think Dud’s pass to Mapimpi was  forward, moot because Willie was offside. Pollard kicked well and took a handful of high balls..

Pollard a 5 ….the same rating as Lomp, who came on, made 2 tackles and lost a ball backwards at a key point, as his only acts, This biased reporting is sickening.

Yopu started the thread showing total stupidity.   Take for instance De Allende vs Henderson.  There were no Henderson playing - the mans name is Henshaw.   The same with th blind side flank.  The player was Itoje   not Lawes.

LMAO!
How many times does this drunken old rugby noob need to be told that it's Robbie Henshaw . . . not Iain Henderson, not Gavin Henson, but Robbie Henshaw.
The guy has over 50 caps for Ireland but our self-proclaimed rugby expert has never actually heard of him . . . even after he's educated by ou Maaik (of all people) he still gets it wrong!

Mozart i9s a flop he gave Lawes  8 points for making 9 tackles and missing one and making 1 turnover.    Du Toit made 13 tackles missing missing  4  (the latter being that he was the busiest and the best forward contributor of the Springboks to the game.  Du Toit made a crucial contribution to the De Klerk try - this he missed out entirely on and as per normal he is so prejudiced he fucked up everything he touched.    he made the same bugger up with Henderson  - the imagined player -  so lets look at Henshaw's defense stats  - they really look sick.  One cannot rely on anything Mozart said about players anyway.  He leis about performances 100% of the time.

Steph slipped 4 tackles, but there were quite a few instances where he rushed up and was simply beaten (stats don't account for these). He was porous. Steph didn't do a lot right, and the best defensive engagements he was involved in all included Eben forcefully manhandling the carrier. Once again, you haven't the faintest idea what you are talking about. Steph had his usual kind if test, a bad one.

Damian did absolutely nothing of note. His absolute best work was being in proximitry to a bobbling high ball. What attacking run was noteworthy? Damian gets the ball and we had to fight to get it back. Ball presentation and security, as well as body position in contact, has long been a problem with him. I recall one serious and strong tackle. What else? He was a blunt dead-end. Damian is a worthless option at 12. 14 runs and 3 passes? What else? Nothing.

Dud Allende did nothing….his pass to Mapimpi was also clumsily forward. Saved because the focus was on the penalty on Willie, who was probably not ahead of the kicker.

In 14 runs this utterly predictable centre beat 1 tackle.
