Well as to him being the captain I do not have all the stats at my finger tips but I will say this:
Since he was appointed as the captain he has not won a series against a top contender.

What ever he did with the bat has not won us a series.
Does not appear to have the leadership qualities required to encourage and inspire players to rise to the task at hand.
Appears to be to lay back, no drive and vigor.
Basically he is a follower not a leader.

Mike and AJ, we go back to the point where Amla didnt want the captaincy. It was foisted on him as a race based agenda as failing Amla we would have had another white captain.
Another query is Bavuma needed before De Kock? AB should not be keeping wicket. De kock is a better batsman as well and of course a very good keeper.
Piedt doesnt look up to much from what I have seen, Rabada should have played. Duminy looks a better off spinner than Piedt in any case.
I am afraid the quotas story is kicking in as it is in rugby.
As to Amla as captain he certainly doesnt look the part and his batting is all out of sorts. To quiet and uninspiring. If the Proteas lose the series I guess he might well step down.

From a news article:
Before taking over the captaincy from Smith:

31-year-old Amla has scored 6 214 runs, including 21 centuries, at an average of 51.32 in 76 Test for the Proteas since making his debut against India in Kolkata in 2004.
Since taking the captaincy, more or less:

Thanks or the info - so in the 31 innings batted by Amla since he became captain he made 807 runs at an average of 26 runs per innings.  That definitely is not up to his previous high standard and his batting average per innings is slipping constantly.
I think he needs to start playing the kind of game he used to when at his peak - he is not up to standard at present.

Just some commnets from Supersport:Mark BainThe whole process has gone belly up .. from selectors to selection to captaincy to combinations .. not looking healthy at all !! .. senior players getting injured , playing a few games , getting injured again ... protea camp seem to have no answer period . I just hope it's not gonna be one of those endings where we seek glory in blocking out a test match . Take the gloves away from AB and get QdK into the side . Play Stiaan at 4 or 5 where he belongs .Like · Reply · 3 hrsKaas Van Tonder · Food Handler at Simba Pepsico, Parow IndustrialIf this is not the clearest message that he shouldnt be wearing the wicket-keeping gloves then I dont know what is. Wake up selectors, stop wearing out our best player. Get De Kock in and stop sending AB on pointless bi-lateral ODI games. Give him some family time.Like · Reply · 4 hrsSas Le Roux · StellenboschBring Quinton de Kock back. Amla just pathetic at the moment.

Cant be sure of these figures (Were shown on TV today) but FAf is averaginbg 17, Duminy 10 and bavuma 27and Almla 26.That is simply pathetic. Steyn is breaking down, Philanders wicket taking is drying up and we do not have a top class spinner. Unless there is talent in the wings I cant see us at number 1 for much longer.

As a matter of fact I predicted the decline of the Proteas awhile back. What I didn't anticipate is the decline in batting of the senior players which has made matters worse. Once again, the writing was on the wall with the retirement of Smith, Gibbs, Kallis and Boucher, failure to comprehend the gravity of such invaluable talent and experience is a show of complete ignorance.

It really is time to drop Amla from the squad.

He's not only a poor captain but contributes nothing with the bat.

Question begs ... why is he there ... ?? Clearly it has nothing to do with cricket.

Denny ... the boys you mentioned had to retire some time or another. Gibbs has been gone for awhile now. Surely there are suitable replacements out there ... ?? We can't be that shy of talent ... can we?

I never liked Smith. Every time I watched this fool play he'll go out for less than 10 runs. Blessing in disguise if you ask me.

Kallis is a massif loss.

It seems you need to have a darker complexion to qualify ... and if your a filthy muslim the captaincy is yours.

Changing the subject a tad ... when can we expect those promised photies ... and did you enjoy your time down south?? Would you recommend Melbourne as a holiday destination?

He's not only a poor captain but contributes nothing with the bat. Disagree, he is a very good Captain of that there is no doubt.

Question begs ... why is he there ... ?? Clearly it has nothing to do with cricket. That's the problem...other than AB there is no-one.

Denny ... the boys you mentioned had to retire some time or another. Gibbs has been gone for awhile now. Surely there are suitable replacements out there ... ?? We can't be that shy of talent ... can we?
Shy on talent...damn right we are when it comes to real cricket, meaning Test cricket. It takes a long time for a player to come through at Test level....did you know that the Waugh twins, Mathew Hayden and Ponting were all dropped from Test cricket after failing to deliver and it took awhile before they came good and became permanent fixtures in the side? It just once again  highlights the difference between ram slam ODI and T20 crap where anyone and everyone can become an overnite sensation. ...eg QDK. Sure players have to retire and life moves on but Gibbs was replaced with Alviro Pietersen which goes to show a lack of talent and depth. Pietersen was a failure but there was no-one else. Elgar is in for Smith and Van Wyk is a middle order batsman who's been thrown into the opening role....one can only feel sorry for he had no chance with that kind of baptism.

I never liked Smith. Every time I watched this fool play he's go out for less than 10 runs. Blessing in disguise if you ask me.

Kallis is a massif loss. And therein lies the problem.....he leaves a gaping hole as a top class batsman, a solid as a rock first drop and a great allrounder who could always be relied upon to break a partnership. It's unrealistic to expect someone to step into his shoes and it's going to take a long time to establish a rock-like No3.

It seems you need to have a darker complexion to qualify ... and if your a filthy muslim the captaincy is yours. Nope can't agree with you on that one...suffice to say there are failures on both sides of the colour line.

Changing the subject a tad ... when can we expect those promised photies ... and did you enjoy your time down south?? Would you recommend Melbourne as a holiday destination?Leaving tomorrow morning....first stop Bermagui where we'll overnite then it's another hour and a half to Eden but in between there is Narooma, Pambula and Merimbula....let alone Mollymook and Sus.sex Inlet...God's country for sure.
Melbourne is ok around the City area, I'm not sure what you like, Sydney has so much more to offer with regards to beaches, the area around the Opera House and then there's the Ferry ride to the other side to Manly Beach. Melbourne really has no beaches to speak of accepting for Pt Phillip Bay but it's regarded as Australia's art centre if that's to your taste. I have heard visitors say that they should have spent more time in Sydney instead of visiting Melbourne. But hey...each to his own.

There is no doubt that Amla is clearly out of form
I have also never really seen an aggressive bone in his body in his capacity as a captain, nor is he assertive enough on the field with the players, and I can't exactly say he imparts a lot of encouragement or confidence on to the players during play
I still firmly believe he is good enough to play for SA, just take some responsibilities or distractions away from his game, and he will improve

Ian Botham who has a cricketing brain and a cricketer for whom I have the greatest respect had nothing but high praise of Amla's decisions whilst the English were batting.

Denny
I am talking about his overall demeanor as a captain, not just this series
I just don't see it at all
Kepler, Hansie, Smith, even Boucher - non captain, showed more of a "presence" on the field as a Protea captain.
I just don't experience that at all with Amla.
He is way... way too quiet, not vocal, not verbal, not pumping the guys up between wickets or overs....... just nothing

Amla doesn't have to be like any of the others, there is no set way for a cricket captain to behave to motivate the team.....hell I'm not anywhere near him and I can feel his presence as Captain. He has a wonderful settling of the team much like the Pakistan captain has on his players.

Fair enough, that's your opinion
I believe the captaincy is dramatically hurting his personal game
Without a doubt, The stats show it as well
Something needs to be sacrificed to bring things back to normal

Maybe it has/does....without a doubt his form has slumped, everyone knows it has but  his decision making remains top shelf. There is a choice....either he reverses his form or he forsakes the Captaincy. It will be interesting to see what happens. At a guess he stays and his form doesn't reverse but he remains Captain......wouldn't that be typical of todays South Africa? My guess is the Proteas are going to lose this current series alongside of their #1 ranking. I hope I'm ^#&8 wrong!

"There is a choice....either he reverses his form or he forsakes the Captaincy."
My sentiments exactly............
Not sure who can take the reins of captaincy... maybe Faf..... it can't do him any worse at the moment
I would much rather prefer seeing Amla making the runs and leaving the captaincy to someone else.

Denny, with respect, AB is not a captain, just like Kallis wasn't one. Faf is also struggling like Amla and it is too soon to drop him, we are already too thin on xp. We need another opener. Van Zyl should bat at 4 or 5. Duminy has been underperforming forever. Bring Bidf Back! We need his grit.

Smith's retirement a blessing in disguise? The best captain we've ever had and who retired with a test average above 50. Yeah, ok man ;) He was a total liability. Should be taken out back and shot.

Denny ... forgive my ignorance but as far as I know, isn't the captain supposedly the brain behind our attack and defense ... what I mean to say is that he's to use his tactical genius to out fox the opposition by placing his field in a certain way and instructing his bowler to bowl accordingly.

Taking wickets is the name of the game ... surely?

Also ... I presume he would have done his homework on the opposition's key danger men and sussed out their weaknesses ... right? ... and then focus his attack on taking these top boys out.

You guys have started me watching cricket again and from what I could tell, Amla doesn't have any of the necessary ideas to wage war against the Poms. He ambles around doing squat. There's no thought behind his play. No game plan ... much like the Goats.

He uses the standard field placements and hopes for the best. No friggin imagination.

Hell of a contribution with the bat again yesterday.

There's being a lot said about AB over the last few days ... that he shouldn't be our glove-man and that a specialist wicket keeper should be brought in ... your comments??

I was listening to the post match comments by Pollie and co and they seem to agree.

Hell of a thing when a team is so dependent on a single man.

My choice for captain would definitely be AB De Villiers. He has a passion for the sport ... contributes consistently and leads by example.

Unlike that useless muslim.

Oh and what's with the silly little twirly bat movement before he makes contact with the ball? Too much Harry Potter?

Bad form from where I'm sitting.

Perhaps he should get rid of it ... may just give him the split second he needs to assess his shot properly.

He can do with all the help he can get.
