The following squad has been selected to represent SA in the Cricket World Cup:-

PROTEAS SQUAD: AB de Villiers (captain), Hashim Amla (vice captain), Kyle Abbott, Farhaan Behardien, Quinton de Kock, JP Duminy, Faf du Plessis, Imran Tahir, David Miller, Morne Morkel, Wayne Parnell, Aaron Phangiso, Vernon Philander, Rilee Rossouw, Dale Steyn.

There are three rather dubious selections in that squad - namely Behardien, Parnell and Abbott.

I cannot think for one minute why a player like Behardien is selected - he is useless.   I would rather have thought they should take Stiaan van Zyl instead.

Abbott is a journeyman - no real speedster in bowling.   I think Marchant de Lange is a better bowler.and more diffiucult to contend with.

Parnell has been poor in ODI's for the last year and is lucky to be in the squad.

Agree with you that De Lange would have been a better choice than Abbott.
I don't agree with you about Parnell, I think he can be very valuable to the squad, when on form a very capable batsmen and bowler.
Unfortunately for Behardien, it hasn't worked out thus far in International cricket but he's most certainly not useless! Averaging 36 at a strike rate of 92 in List A is very good, and if he can bring this to the international scene, he'll be good.
V/Zyl is a promising batsmen, although in my opinion not one for ODI's just yet.

That squad sells us short. Berhardien, Abbott and Phangiso are not worthy.

I think that a peron needs to look at the batting averages of the two plaayers concerned:-
Berhadien

I myself would have felt much more confident with Van Zyl in the squad than with Behardien.   With a batting average of only 22,23 in ODI's he definitely is below par.

Why are you looking at first class averages when the World Cup is a one dayer?
If you look at List A, Behardien averages higher, with an incredible strike rate. Behardien is your textbook limited overs player, quick scoring and fast between the wickets.
Van Zyl without a doubt is a better batsmen in the longer form of the game, but I don't think he's suited to the shorter form. At least not yet.

I am not entirely convinced about the List A games as well.   Here Behardin has a slightly higher average of 36,73 as against 36,41 - but if you look at the rest of the stats you will note the following:-
Behardien
Matches played   -   130Centuries           -      3    -   rate   43,350 plus              -     21   -   rate     6,2
Van Zyl
Matches played   -      89Centuries           -      5     -  rate  17,850 plus              -     13    -  rate    6,8
The above indicates that on average Behardien scored a century once in every 43 matches played -  Van Zyl scored a century once in every 17 games played.   Van Zyl also have a higher conversion rate in 50+ scores.
I grant you that Behardien has a faster scoring rate than Van Zyl - but the opposite is that Van Zyl is a much more secure batsman with an ultimate higher conversion rate.
With respect - I do not think "Behardien is your textbook limited overs player" - his batting average in ODI's to my mind proves the opposite.

I agree that Van Zyl is a more secure batsmen, but I just think for the position that Behardien bats in he's a better option.
I think ultimately their not even competing for the same spot because Van Zyl is a top order batsmen, either opener or no3 and for this role he is much better as he's more secure and can probably hold an innings together better.
Whereas, Behardien is a lower order batsmen, usually around 6, which explains why his conversion rate is less - he's role is basically to go in and hit a quick 30/40/50.
If we look at his last match against Australia for instance, he came in late in the innings and hit a quick 63 of only 41 balls.
So the question shouldn't be Van Zyl or Behardien as I don't they're in direct competition with each other.
Please don't misunderstand me and think that I think Behardien should start, I don't believe so.

Van Zyl definitely does not open batting in any foramt of the game - but he has batted from 3 to 6 in  Cobra games while on local level Behardien bats at 4 for the Titans.
A faster batter  in ODI's with a batting average of 22,23 and a highest score of 63 in 16 games is not of much use to my mind.    Incidentally that hiighest score of 63 was in a recent ODI in Australia.    That was the only score of substance he made in that series - he made one other score of 22 - one of ten and two ducks.    Without that one his batting average is in fact 18,58.
Still not happy - but there is nothing that could be done about that one by any of us .

APD Berhardien is nowhere near in the same league as v/Zyl.....given v/Zyl is clearly an attacking bat, he would have been a far better option - no contest I can assure you.

Berhardien is technically flawed and therefore cannot expect to cope with the best bowlers out there. His international record confirms this.

The one way of comparing players' attacking play is to compare their strike rates. Behardien's strike rate is 91.17, which is what is required of a no 6 ODI batsman.

When the squad was named - the report said that CSA took a chance with the selection of Duminy and De Kock - since the two players had some rather seriouss injury problems and were out of cricket since the Windies matches started.
Duminy made a statement that he is fine - and that he would return for the Windies ODI's.   He seems to be over the knee problem that impacted on him for a considerable time now.
De Kock injured suffered an ankle injury in training before the start of the first WI test and the recovery period was given as 6 to 12 weeks.   There has been no formal report given on his progress - and the 6 weeks recovery period would transpire towards the end of January.   However, the following comment on him was made in the report on the announcement of the squad:-
"The good news was that De Kock took the last two steps out of the dungeon from which the players appeared on the stage on Wednesday in one large leap. Clearly, the treatment is working. "We’re hoping he will be ready by the time the World Cup starts," Hudson said."

That would be fine if he actually made runs at 6 instead of looking like a complete prat most the time. I have not seen such a poor looking bat in ages and it is beyond me how he has won a single cap.

He is awful......I saw him make runs once and much of that knock comprised edges.

His ODI average of 22 says it all

You cannot just look at the Strike rate - the rate should be coupled to the ability of a player to make a reasonable number of runs as well - and that is where Behardien comes short seriously .

Uhm..... pot... kettle.... You were looking at his averages in isolation. I looked at the bigger picture, i.e. strike rate and I had a look at his normal batting position. As APD has said, he never comes in at an early stage of the innings. When he comes in, and there is a foundation, his role is to get going straight away. He has shown, however, that when push comes to shove he can dig in and post high scores as he has shown when he got that 63 against the Aussies. Even then, he did that at a rate of around 1.5 runs per ball .

My confidence in the squad is pretty damn low, it must be the worst prepared Protea side going into a WC. With injuries to key players who are being rushed back without adequate preparation I don't hold out much hope.

Parnell, Phasingo and Abbott are provincial players and the speedster who had select me written all over him, Marchant Se Lange, has been left out of the squad.

  Denny - my friend
First of all a belated new years wish of everything for the ebt to you and yours.
I am also disappointed by some selections and would have preferred Marchant de Lange ahead of Abbott and Stiaan van Zyl ahead of Behardien in the team.    I also have seriou doubts about Parnell.   But the squad has been selected and there is nothing that can be done about it.
Insofar as the injured players is concerned - I do not think that the selections would have been done without full medical reports on the two players concerned.  Being only 21 years old - it is likely that De Kock's injury is healing faster than expected.   As for Duminy - he is likely to be back for the ODI's against the Windies starting next week.
On the whole I am quite optimistic that with the team to be selected from the squad we will do well in the WC.   I think Faf's return from a slump is overdue.   With present info and bearing in mind the first game of SA is in New ZEaland, the team against Zimbabwe is likely to b as follows:-
1   Amla2   De Kock3   Du Plessis   *4   Rossouw     *5   De Villiers5   Miller6   Duminy7   Parnell8   Philander9   Steyn10  Morkel11  Tahir.
*   The key is the form of Du Plessis and I am sure that ossouw will get better with more games.
The team has three frontline bowlers.   Tahir is good in the shorter format of the game - but the other 20 overs can in fact shared by Tahir, Parnell and  Duminy.
Lets be optimistic and hope for the be st from each of the selected players.

Denny the worst selection of the lot is Berhardien........how this guy is playing cricket at the highest level is beyond me.

Its insulting.....an ODI average of 22 aged 31.......give us a break

v/Zyl ahead of Berhardien

Harmer ahead of Phasingo

de Lange ahead of Abbott

is how it should have been. I like Parnell, but not to start.

If we play our best 11 we will be in the mix....on paper we have the best side

1. Amla 2. de Kock 3. Faf 4. AB 5. Miller 6. JP 7. Rossouw 8. Philander 9. Steyn 10. Morkel 11. Tahir will take some beating.

Abbott, Behardien and Phasingo should not have been in the squad.

I don't mind Parnell as a squad player, providing left arm variety and a useful enough bat.

But it should have been de Lange, v/Zyl and Harmer ahead of Abbott, Berhardien and Phasingo
