Steph clearly signalled that he was not going to tackle the carrier, which made it a no-brainer for the carrier to hold on and score himself. If you don't buy the dummy, you may just catch the carrier in possession.

But another thing you'll pick up in that move is both scrumhalf Van Zyl and Mapimpi casually jogging back instead of getting themselves over on cover. Van Zyl in fact at no stage looks like he wants anything to do with the situation. Instead of hustling to the outside to cover the huge unprotected space there (yellow arrows), Mapimpi and Van Zyl just keeps jogging straight back (red arrows). 

By the time the ball goes wide after the tackle, look at where Mapimpi finds himself: way on the other side of the tackle in no man's land while his wing is still unprotected.

Yes, he should definitely have gone hard for the ball carrier. In the end he got stuck between the carrier and potential receiver. Easy pickings for the carrier.

Kriel, now that you mention him, is actually in a good position to get directly involved, but then veers away from the action for whatever reason.

Below he is still in a position to get involved in the defense and needs to move towards the ball carrier, which would put him in a prime position to tackle the next ball receiver, Wales #7.

Instead, he mindbogglingly keeps jogging away in the opposite direction of where the attack is going. 

It's rather concerning to see that the simple basics of a defensive line is not being adhered to.

It doesn't look to me as if anyone is sure of what his role is. Total shambles.
