As Holding said, this kid is the business, he just needs to learn to be patient and back his ability

Saf, he will have his fair share of failures, but he will win some matches for us too. Class act if he can sort his head out.

Yeah he is gifted but with time will learn to manage his innings and not try chase everything. Leave him at 7 for now but will move up the order as time goes by.
Botham is a big fan of how he likes to attack

Loved how he and Bavuma stayed positive and still played some shots last night even though we were under a bit of pressure.  They didn't get shell shocked and implode like has almost become a trend for our team lately.

He was a bit fortunate, and the combination of the wicket and England 's spent attack helped. Still it was an exciting knock and he should be allowed to settle at 6 or 7, and keep the gloves. The issue at 7 is it limits bowling options. We had this debate at the CWC, but it's pretty clear for tests you need a fifth real bowler. So he might have prove himself at 6.

RE: Interesting comment on de Kock by Michael Holding.
March 13, 2015, 18:14:52

I was never really convinced he is an opener. At his best he looks like a fast scoring number 6 batsman and wicket keeper. That feels like a good permanent role.

What worries me is the kind of stuff we are hearing from AB in the post above. It's about de Kock ...about ABs not wanting to keep....I'd rather hear him talk about how we are going to win this thing.
NZ, OZ, Sri Lanka and India seem very focused and determined. We seem to be bemused and thinking about touchy feely issues.

The honest answer from AB would have been, de Kock is a great talent, but he has had a disappointing run. And the team needs a solid start, so a change may be necessary. This is the WC and we will do everything we can to win.

There you have it...a year ago I was saying that number 6 and wicket keeper/batsman is the role. Certainly I haven't been proven right yet....but a damn sight more right than your call for him to replace Smith as our opener. My warning that he wasn't ready for the WC also proved prophetic with 4/10 rating.
But before I declare victory on that number 6 role. Let's see if he can keep it up. His history is to fold under pressure as a kid, but he is getting to an age where perhaps he can handle things.

Moz don't waste your time trying to reason with Mike......FFS even a brickbat new that QDK is not a test opener, not his fault just another dumb idea by the selectors and anyone who knows anything about cricket new that his application in test crick was in need of remedial action. He's finally turned the corner but prior to yesterday he was a failure in test cricket.

Well there is so much stuff out there...Bavuma is a quota, Cook is bog ordinary, Amla is fatally flawed, the gorilla who played last week is the fast bowling answer, Miller is the answer, Rossouw is the answer......all horribly wrong. Now finally this crowd have a crumb, Quinton produces a decent innings....in exactly the role he should always have been playing. Did he face dangerous spin, was the balling zipping off the track, were the Poms engaged? Not so much....but still you can't be too picky about crumbs.

I won't take anything away from QDK.....without his contribution the Proteas would once again be floundering. Technically I thought he was good and so was his shot selection. Apart from one early rush of blood which reminded me of a previous QDK I think the lad will cut it at test cricket. I also think that he was assisted by a lifeless pitch that offered little or no swing.  I've noticed that Rossouw is being given the thumbs up as the next best thing......maybe so, but for now he's an ODI player, no doubt his time will come at a higher level but some people need to be reminded that the red ball game is totally different to the white ball game. ODI success does not guarantee white ball success.....just ask David Miller. Cook is an accumulator of runs, he's not a flashy player but is rock solid, it's exactly the type of substance required of an opener....stability. I don't think he has all the shots but he understands his own game and plays to his strengths......just what's needed. Hardus Van Wyk.....bowls at a good clip...so what? Everyone bowls at 145km's these days and what some here have failed to understand over the years is that very important matter as to where and how that ball lands when it leaves the fingers. One has to regard his debut as a major failure which reflects badly as he is doing very well in domestic cricket and the Wanderes is his home ground

Hardus van Wyk...not to be confused with  hardus viljoen

QDK has always been a great prospect. He is a fantastic odi batsman already.Hopefully this ton will mark the start of a very successful test career too.
I love it when a youngUn fulfills his talent as a kid.Vaughan van Jaarsveld is stilly biggest disappointment.

A year ago you said nothing of the sortt - all this go on because it was suggested that De Kock should bat at opener in ODI's in place of Smith.  Nobody ever said he should open because that is very hard to open batting in the longer format of the game after keeping wicket.
What you say now is exactly opposite to what you wrote the past year about De Kock - that he is a poor bat and cannot face either good fast or spin bowlers.
And you said we have no real talent coming through from the younger bunch of players - what a joke you are.

You had to find something - what about all the threads started by you criticizing De Kock as a poor player in your book.  Nobody wanted De Kock as an opener in tests because of his wicket keeping role.
By the way I just had a look at the upcoming IPL player auction and noted that the following SA players have been retained by their IPL franchises:-
Delhi Daredevils
Quinton De Kock, JP Duminy, Albie Morkel, Imran Tahir
Kings XI Punjab]
David Miller
Mumbai Indians
Marchant de Lange
Royal Challengers Bangalore
AB de Villiers, Johan Wiese
Kolkatta Knight Riders
Morne Morkel
So the player you previouslky said is useless (De Kock) as coining it all the way to the bank,  He is paid $800 000 - say R12 800 000.  N ice going for a youngster you constantly degrades.

This is hilarious!

Moffie has spent the last year slagging off Quinton de Kock at every opportunity - both as a wicket-keeper and as a batsman - and now, when the youngster comes good and ensures that the pompous old fop has copious amounts of egg dribbling down his fat, red face, we have Moffie's Servile Gimp Dense hissing and spitting at anyone who dares to point out that his Master is in fact an ignorant old fool who wouldn't recognize a talented cricketer if he had the words "TALENTED CRICKETER" emblazoned across his forehead in bright flashing lights.

LMAO!

I personally think Moffie would be well advised to stop stamping his foot and demanding an apology and rather start wiping all that egg off his stupid face . . . and maybe read a bit more about cricket and try to understand the game before pontificating about a sport he clearly knows nothing about in his typically arrogant and condescending manner . . . although let's be honest, that has never stopped the tiresome old fool from droning on about rugby with the same hilarious consequences!

Now look who's talking ....what exactly would you know Huh? As a matter of fact you have never  written a half decent post about cricket.......even now as we speak after volumes of posts through and since the WC you haven't posted a single one. But typically you're not hear for cricket...are you Bitterbal? But let's pretend I don't know what I'm saying...so here.....tell us what exactly has QDK done in test cricket prior to his maiden century Hmmm? Go ahead....not that I'm expecting a half decent response from the Bitterbal who's stuck in the assend of JHB.
Wehe.

"But let's pretend I don't know what I'm saying . . ."

No need to pretend, Dense.

You seem to have mistaken my post above for an invitation to discuss cricket with you. Just so we're clear, my comment above was posted firstly to demonstrate that Moffie made an even bigger fool of himself on Quinton de Kock than he did on Lood de Jager (if that's even possible) and secondly, to point out that you are a disgusting, grovelling lickspittle who can't bear the fact that your Master has egg all over his fat face.

Listen Dense, it's so blatantly obvious from all your pathetic cricket witterings that you never played a game of cricket in your entire life and you wouldn't know which end of the bat to hold. You high-tailed it out of South Africa and arrived in cricket-obsessed Australia so you decided you better learn the fundamentals of the game and now you think you're some kind of expert because you watched a few games on TV.

Pfffffffffffhahahahaha!

Like I would waste my time debating cricket matters with an ignorant cricket noob like you! Keep the laughs coming, Dense!

We have basically all been saying that De Kock should be dropped down the order...I seem to remember there being a general consensus on that. Mozter did slag De kock plenty, mostly cos he was young and not Graham Smith, but I quite clearly remember him saying on a few occasions that he might be better suited to playing lower down the order.
Just to keep things in perspective however, this is just one innings. Lets see how he does going forward.
On a side note....how awesome has Cook been?
