Springbok captain Jean de Villiers will require surgery on his injured left knee and will be in a race against time to be fit for the Rugby World Cup in England in 2015.

De Villiers left the field in the 58th minute of the Springboks' final Test of the season, last Saturday against Wales in Cardiff, after twisting his left knee and dislocating his knee cap.

Scans shortly after the match revealed significant ligament damage to the knee. De Villiers returned to South Africa on Monday and was assessed by an orthopaedic surgeon in Cape Town, who advised that the Springbok captain requires surgical reconstruction of the knee.

"We are currently consulting with the best specialists in South Africa to determine the best way to approach the surgery as there are potentially a few options available," said Springbok team doctor Craig Roberts on Monday afternoon.

"It's imperative that the best course of action is decided on so that Jean can start recovery and rehabilitation as soon as possible to give him the best chance to be fit for the World Cup.

"At this stage it's still difficult to determine how long he will be out of action, but it would probably be at least eight months."

Headline is miss-leading as they still don't have the definitive answer on how long it will take before he is able to play.

Shades of Juan Smith, isn't it? If he does recover, after what will undoubtedly be a lengthy layoff, will he be sharp enough for test rugby? It looks like a mountain of a challenge ahead of him. Regardless of the playing prospects, I just wish him a full recovery. You don't want to end your career with a debilitating injury that affects your life off the field. That's the most important thing.

A feel sick about this....what a way to go. But I can't see him making he RWC. Time for him to get well, enjoy life and hopefully become an assistant to the team.

A very sad way to go. I can;t believe that on Saturday might have been the last time he pulls on the Springbok jersey. A true gentleman of the game and one the greatest talents South Africa have produced. 

How did you get your injury Lestat, you were saying on the other thread?

Very unfortunate...a man with exceptional qualities and rare...brave,tough and strong and oozes integrity on and off the field...we all are with you Jean and wish you a miraculous recovery...you have served rugby and your country well.

 Definitely in my most respected rugby players as people, along with Richie McCaw and Brian O'Driscoll. Embodies the core and more traditional gentleman-like qualities of the game and it's sad to see him injured like this.

 I beleive there is an old saying - going somnething like this:-
"Cricet is a game for gentlemen - played by rogues.  Ruby is a game for rogues - played by gentlemen".
If ever there was a gentleman playing rugby - it is De Villiers.   I am afraid that at his age and ebaring in mind the severity of the injury - he should rather retire and take up a career as commentator or coaching.    He has all the qualities needed for a future coach and expertise in rugby and can decide on the way forward.   
May he have all the best things in his life in future.
