Du Toit out for the season

I just heard on Talk 702, that Du Toit has knee ligament damage and will be out for the rest of the Super Rugby season and probably the world cup as well. 

I think that is a huge blow!

Du Toit had to leave the field in the 37th minute of the Vodacom Super Rugby clash against the Cheetahs on Saturday, won 27-10 by the Cell C Sharks.

He will be seeing the specialist who operated on the same knee previously, in Cape Town today. The hope is that it is not a re-rupture of his ACL and a confirmed diagnosis will only be made after seeing the specialist.

“We as The Sharks family, and I’m sure South African rugby fans at large, are hoping that his injury is not as bad as originally feared,” said Dr Alan Kourie."

The 22-year-old injured his knee ligaments in the Sharks' 27-10 Super Rugby win over the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein at the weekend.

According to the supersport.com website, Du Toit suffered a ligament tear on the same knee which ruled him out for most of the 2014 season.

He will not be available for the rest of the year, the website reports.

The highly rated Du Toit played two Tests for the Springboks in 2013.

BLOEMFONTEIN — Pieter Steph du Toit’s season is over after he tore his anterior cruciate ligament in the Sharks’ win over the Cheetahs on Saturday night and it is highly likely that his chances of going to the World Cup this year are also gone.

The Sharks lock, one of the most prodigious talents to come out of the east coast, twisted his knee in a tackle during the first half of Saturday’s game in Bloemfontein. Du Toit boarded a flight to Cape Town to see a surgeon while his teammates went the opposite way, feeling bitter-sweet about their 27-10 victory.

It is the second such injury that the 22-year-old has suffered in his short, promising career but this one will have added sting because of the lost opportunity to play at the World Cup.

The injury has added to Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer’s sleepless nights, who had plans of pairing the youngster with Bulls veteran Victor Matfield. That Cheetahs front rower Lood de Jager broke his elbow in the first game of the season, coincidentally in the reverse fixture in Durban, would have added to Meyer’s woes.

The blood flushed from Sharks coach Gary Gold’s face when the subject of the severity of Du Toit’s injury was broached after the game.
