Bluebok we could do a lot worse than the warrior Duane - nemises of the bent read.
29 Feb 2016, 13:48#3
We don't have a coach yet, but this is one man I would not mind being a permanent fixture in the Bok setup. His playing abroad might hurt his chances, but he is still surely a prime candidate!

a captain who is playing abroad?
I don't think it's agood idea,...... even having the requirements needed, as it's the case IMO
29 Feb 2016, 14:47#7
He can always come back and play here again. I reckon if they made that a condition of him being made captain, he'd be back in SA in a flash!

Nope Bluebok. Rumour has it that he was made the offer of Bok skipper last year, to keep him in the country, but either the money were just too good, or he could not get out of the deal. I don't think he'll ever be full time Bok captain while playing abroad.
29 Feb 2016, 15:06#9
I hope that is just a rumor Db. I think he is the best candidate we have at the moment. Pollard could have been an option, but as we all know he is out of contention.

I would have made Duane captain last year already....when it became clear that Jean was a doubtful starter. There was an article by Stephen Nel in Die Burger in which he "unofficially" said Duane was offered the Bok Captaincy to try and keep him in SA. Most of his "unofficial " reports turn out to be the truth. A Bok captain playing abroad is unprecedented.

Lomp is being groomed as Bok captain. Last year he converted his forward leadership position into a platform for himself....every lineout, every phase ball went to Lomp. And one has to confess, if Cassius had a lean and hungry look, Lomp has a confused and harried look.
But making the assumption those who gave him pack leadership actually know him better, and he isn't as stupid as he looks....he is the probably a candidate. John Smit got the role very young and we had eight years of consistent leadership.

Du Preez - Meyer's third choice in the RWC as captain was Fourie du Preez. The Fourie style of play on the instruction of Meyer was in the end disastrous. Hee was a foreign-based player, but I think it was not to be regarded as a precedent - so it was merely a short term arrangement.
A foreign-based captain will not be released by his clubs for pre-season training camps and will spend minimal time in training with the team - basically a flawed situation.

I'm not nearly sold on Lood as captain yet. Hopefully someone else puts up a hand during the season. I'm not a Strauss as captain fan either...nor Bambie or Pollard. Hell, Bok rugby is in shambles, let's sort out Jurie, Hoskins and the coach first! Pick the best squad and then worry about on field politics.

Bambie as Bok captain is about as scary as N Korea getting nukes. I'm not sold on Lomp either....not as a player or as a leader. But if he is a decent leader we can overlook some of his playing deficiencies....many Bok captains, Smit included, have not ways been clearly the best player in their positions.
What I do like at this juncture is finding a John Smit or a Grahame Smith......a young mature guy who can grow into a long term leader. Our rugby is toast this year....we have a crop of poor youngsters, but presumably we will build better talent over the next four years. Having a leader who experienced the lean years is a good recipe.

Our rugby was toast in 2014 and 2015 - they cannot be worse than they were in those two years - ultimately going down for a while as the 6th rated team in world rugby and be beaten by of all teams Japan.
I have news for you - I think the player being groomed for captaincy is Malherbe - a very mature guy with a strong personality. However, they did not want to upset Wakefield and made him only captain - so they threw in useless De Jongh that would hopefully be gone to play Sevens asap. He was mediocre on Saturday and when he was gone Malherbe took over the captaincy and the tries started to flow.

Yep de Jongh was so poor he out gained all three Bools' centers combined.

How did he "out-gain" them and why did the Stormers played so much better later in the game when he was gone?

Umm yeah. Jaco Kriel for Bok skipper. My guess is that during his first test for the Boks it'll look like he's a seasoned international. He commands respect from players, they rally around him and he has a perfect skipper temperament. Gives away hardly any penalties, sets a good example and gets enough breaks and does enough work at rucks to get the lads pumped.
But yeah. I'm a Kriel fan of so.

Moffie, the only thing that happened to de Jongh, was Serf lining him up and smashing him off his feet.....it was embarrassing.
de Jongh's gain in metres.....had nothing to do with beating defenders and everything to do with one long run......in wide open space from broken play.
You clearly did not watch the game you ignorant prick
The same game where PSDT was fantastic with ball in hand and where Marcel v/d Merwe was dominant at 3, despite playing in a less physical pack
Same game where good old Schalk gained less metres than the number of runs he attempted
Keep calling them Moffie

Good shout Plum. I'd second that, he's young enough, good enough and has a good record when it comes to the nasty stuff and misdemenours( spelling?). Let him captain the boks but leave Whitely to captain the Lions.

I have no problem with either Kriel or Malherbe as captain - both have the ab ility and mental requirements for captaincy.
01 Mar 2016, 08:37#24
Lomp shouldn't be a Bok to begin with ... as for captain ... well that's just friggin hilarious.
The very first player I'd chalk up as a Bok is Jaco Kriel ... and straight after that I'd make him captain.
It's a no-brainer!
Best play er in the country and an inspirational leader.

Jaco makes the best sense of all...PL as vice/standby if he proves it with Sharks this year...shoulder injury was unfortunate.
02 Mar 2016, 07:57#27
Jaco Kriel first needs to become a Bok, before he can become captain! I would agree that he is one of the best players in the country at the moment, but he needs to prove himself at the top before he can be seriously regarded as an option for Bok captain. How many players have excelled massively in Super Rugby and CC, only to fail as Boks? Can't have the cart before the horse!
And before someone has a hissy fit, Kriel is, in my opinion, more than good enough to become Bok captain...but he still has a few more hoops to jump through.

@BlueBok
Man I'm so excited to see that guy jumping through those hoops. Though I rather imagine it as him smashing through bank vaults :)
A lot of us are quite negative about the state of SA rugby but, it is actually an exciting time. The sun might just poke through the clouds and reveal a garden that is fresher and greener than it was before the storm.

The biggest weakness we Saffas suffer from is our conservative, non venturing and steriotype natures and the inability to read between the lines...we stand back too long and wait and wait and yes we try and close the door but by that time the horse has indeed bolted.
We cannot take risk and calculated risk is the key to improvement and growth...nothing ventured nothing gained.
We waffle on about a talent that stares you in the face but by the time we realise that this talent is world class he is gone to greener pastures.
Jaco has Bok captaincy in talent and leadership.
Ackemann for Bok coach and Jaco as his captain would kick start SA rugby a very excellent calculated risk.
