The above match was not covered by Supersport and there is nothing in the media on that one.  Any match report available?  Please help out.

The Match will take place today:  Here is the team from SArugby.co.za

Theron shuffles SA U20s for Maties encounter     January 22, 2013 Junior Springbok coach Dawie Theron has confirmed the starting line-up for the SA Under-20 training squad’s match on Wednesday morning against Maties in Stellenbosch.

The training match is the second of three outings against Western Cape-based university sides and is an integral part of the squad’s two week training and planning camp in Cape Town.

Tomorrow’s match will kick off at 10:00 at the Markötter Sports Ground, Paul Roos Gymnasium in Stellenbosch.

The 34 players have been together since last week and will end their camp with a final clash against the University of Cape Town on Saturday.

Meanwhile, three squad members who were in action last Friday against UWC, Cheslin Kolbe (fullback), Justin Geduldt (centre) and Seabelo Senatla (wing), have all returned to the Springbok Sevens squad to resume with preparations for next week’s HSBC Sevens World Series tournament in Wellington.

Outside centre Jan Serfontein and flyhalf Handré Pollard will also return to Pretoria to join the Vodacom Bulls after tomorrow’s clash.

Theron and his coaching staff made six changes to last week’s starting line-up. Justin Forwood (prop), Ruan Steenkamp (flank) and Roelof Smit (No 8) all get a starting place amongst the forwards, while JP Lewis (left wing), Sylvian Mahuza (outside centre) and Tim Swiel (fullback) are the new starters amongst the backs.

Regarding team selection, Theron again reiterated that everyone in the 34 man training group will get a chance to play.

“The match against UWC was a very useful exercise for us last week,” said Theron.

“However, the game against the Maties will severely test the character of this group. Maties always field a formidable line-up and it will be a good opportunity for us to test a number of aspects of our game plan that we have been working on.”

The SA U20 training squad’s starting line-up against Maties:

15. Tim Swiel
14. Luther Obi
13. Sylvian Mahuza
12. Jan Serfontein
11. JP Lewis
10. Handré Pollard
9. Hanco Venter
8. Roelof Smit
7. Jacques du Plessis
6. Ruan Steenkamp
5. Marvin Orie
4. Irnè Herbst
3. Luan de Bruin
2. Jacques du Toit
1. Justin Forwood

Sorry - I thought the match was yesterday.  Saw the team though - but assume that Theron will bring on most other players - like he did against the UWC.

Theron clearly has no idea when it comes to centre, he has two class 13's in Dries Swanepoel and Tyler Fisher and he goes and selects Mahuza who at 13 - what a fool

Saffex

I think Swanepoel and Fisher will play at 13 sometime during the match or had played since the match is over by now.   I think Theron is giving every candidte a run and will make up his mind afterwards.   Mahuza?  What is his claim to fame?

Theron also have to bear in mind affirmative action - to keep the politicos quiet.   He will have to have very sound reasons for not finally selecting some of the potential Black players - otherwise all hell will break lose.

Well this is the second match and neither Swanepoel or Fisher have started yet. He is also keeping faith with lightweight Orie at lock.

I would not be surprised to see this side lose today

Against a full strength Matie side, it would be a tight game and there would be no shame in loosing against them. I would think that Maties is the favorite.

Thank you very much.   To my mind too small to be an effective center - even small in comparison with De Jongh.

He may be better suited to play on the wing.

Outeniqua produces some very good rugby players though.

According to that he actually plays wing and fullback.

Should just be an experiment from the coaching staff. Let's see how it turns out first. Maybe he surprises everyone...

As much as we won the last Baby Bok WC, Theron and his selections have never inspired me.

Hell he failed to include Ettienne Oosthuizen in last years squad, selecting Orie instead, who was the only player never to make a match 23 all tournament.

He also failed to select Marcel Coetzee in his day and there have been a few other big names that escape me

have you ever thought about the fact that he might have to stick to a ratio for developmental purposes.....if you get what i mean...

Not saying it is so as there is no official statement in that regard, however....

Well I think with this Baby Bok side, Serfontein, Fisher, Swanepoel and Swiel are musts to start, one would have to work around these 4 with regards to non merit selections

I don't really know Fisher.

I have heard alot of good things about Swanepoel as well as Obi, but haven't really seen them.

Swiel I like, but it's difficult I don't like short Fullbacks.

So if i pick him i would pick him at 10, then I would also like to  have Pollard in the side so I would pick him at fullback due to his size.

Serfontein is a must.

So they are the only three players that i think are sure things.

Am with you on Swiel at 10 and Pollard at 15, said as much elsewhere. Serfontein is a must at 12 and then its between Swanepoel and Fisher for 13, with one of them to play wing

Maties pip Baby Boks

23 Jan 2013

The SA Under-20 training squad have been beaten 26-17 by Maties as they continued their Junior World Cup preparation in Stellenbosch

The Stellenbosch students scored four times, including a penalty try, and were successful with three conversions, while the SA Under-20 training squad scored three tries and slotted a conversion. Maties lead 12-7 at halftime.

The match was played in near perfect weather conditions and in front of a few hundred spectators.

Maties’ greater experience ultimately saw them safely home in an absorbing and entertaining tussle. They dominated the opening 20 minutes, but the SA U20 squad got better as the match progressed and produced their best spell of the match either side of halftime.

SA U20 coach, Dawie Theron, and his assistant coaches, Nazeem Adams and Brendan Venter, would have been pleased with their team’s defensive efforts just after halftime, when they prevented Maties from scoring at least three times after absorbing a lot of pressure from the students.

Theron lamented the fact that his charges created a lot of opportunities, but failed to convert their chances into points.

“Maties started off very well and we were a bit shell shocked at the beginning, but the boys grew into the game and as a result created a lot of chances,” said Theron.

“Apart from scoring three times, I think we wasted at least seven more opportunities to score. But this

strenuous workout against Maties was exactly what we needed.

“A lot of our boys are still Under-18 and Under-19 and it was good for them to be exposed to that kind of pressure. Our aim was to keep to our structures and I think we contested much harder for the ball as the game progressed.

“The boys learnt today that they have to focus and play for the entire 80 minutes, something that we would need to do during the Junior World Championship in France. From that aspect, I would say it a very good exercise today,” added Theron.

The squad’s third and last training match is on Saturday at 16:00 against UCT at Brookside, the home of Villager Rugby Club in Claremont.

Scorers:

Maties – Tries: Neethling Gericke (hooker), Reniel Hugo (lock), Johnny Kotze (replacement centre), penalty try. Conversions: Dean Grant (replacement flyhalf, 2), JH Potgieter (flyhalf).

SA Under-20 – Tries: Jacques du Plessis (flank), Tim Swiel (fullback), JP Lewis (left wing). Conversion: Handré Pollard.

Saffex and Ek

I see they played Du Plessis on the flank and the ball sense wiz kid (Swiel) was one of the try-scorers.   Not at all suprised by that one.

I always thought Maties was a tough nutto crack in this case.   It would probably be easier against Ikeys.

I would have loved to see this game on TV -  Supersport is a mess - they should have bradcasted it - since there is no other  live rugby going on at present.

Yes du Plessis has played both games at flank as he has all season for the Bulls side. All 4 locks in the Baby Bok squad are Bulls, so its much like they did with Steph du Toit last season using an athletic lock at 7.

du Plessis used to be a champion javelin thrower and they reckon he is damn quick and skilful for a 2.01m and 118kg kid

Good to see Swiel kicking arse
