I'm really liking this idea, he's been the best in the lineout all season making steal after steal and outplaying Matfield in his own game. He's also ridiculously athletic having taken part in long jump in his school days and he has marshalled the Stormers lineout well in Bekker's absence (2013 when Andrie's was injured). Steph Du-Toit in my eye's looks like he can play both but with the news that he has bulked up I'm leaning towards him playing 4.
Etzebeth at 5
Pieter-Steph was shown in the video when attending a recent game and he looked really bulked up and much stornger than he did before his injury. However, where did you get the news from tha he bulked up? He always was circa 118 kgs in weight - what is he now?
Personally i think it is way past the time for Matfield to go - he is weakening the tight 5 way too much and he is showing a serious decline in line out performances - perceived to be his strongest asset. I have no problem with Etzebeth at 5 and Pieter-Steph at 4 or vice versa.
However, we are trying our luck here - Meyer will never dispose of Matfield - irrespective of how useless he is.
I do think that their should be a legacy where the incumbent player has to start from the bench and beat the established player. Also both can learn allot from Matfield, so having the young and the old in the squad is good.
It is unfortunate about the injuries to PSTD as he is much better than Lood Foot. He could by now have been in the Springbok system and passed Matfield by.
One thing about lineouts though. Many of the commentators on Sky sports say that the lineouts throws are anywhere except where Matfield is. Everyone knows Matfield is the lineout master so they opposition never through the ball near him. matfield is still calling the lineouts on our own throw and organising on defence.
PSDT may well have allready passed Matfield by, but he cant do that from the stand injured all of the time.
I don't really care where you put them, but these four will be y world cup locks
Du TOit
Etzebeth
Flip
Lewies
Stupid doesn't begin to describe it.
PSDT is an awesome talent and I also read somewhere that he had put on plenty of muscle while out injured. What a player this kid is. He would be better suited to 5 than Etzebeth who is more than capable of playing 5.....But my call would be Willemse for now until we get a look at PSDT and reminded of how good he is.
I'd go with Willemse at 4 and Etzebeth at 5. However if we go with Etzebeth and PSDT it has to be Etzebeth at 4 and PSDT at 5.
I am also a big Lood fan he had a huge S15 season in a poor Cheetahs side.....I'd also move the impressive Jacques du Plessis of the Bulls to his rightful spot at lock. Lewies is a good prospect, I like his work rate and aggression.
The young WP pair are good, in particular Jean Kleyn, with Ruan Botha a close second.
Its a pity we lost the Marais brothers to France and Mostert of the Lions impresses me. Don't forget Quinn Roux and the Cheetahs, Carl Wegner.
We have locks to burn.
Please keep living in Cloude Cuckoo land ab out Matfield's mastery in line-oouts - that was the case years ago. Studdy his line out eprfraces and theway things went snce June - when h came back to play for the Boks.
He called less and less line-outs to himself - and he a g ainst Wales stood at no 3 in th Line-outs - apparently to get away from the Welsh no 5 lock. He has lost some line outs on own thrhow and was not a shadow of the line out player he used to be.
Sure he can advise other players - but not in the team where he is a serious problem in Tight 5 play. That is the long and the short of the issue - he should do his country a favour and retire.
That would be the biggest disaster for Springbok Rugby ever.
In another thread you wrote that the Springbok Tight 5 combaination has been weakened and I asked why that happened - but you did not repond. There are actually two reasonss, namely -
* the decline since 2013 in the prerformances of Jannie and Beast; and* the bringing in of the gruntless Victoria into the combination.
Be honest and admit those are the reaosns.
Victor was a genius ... operative word being "was" ...
Now he's a lightweight pretending to be 25 ... well past his best ... suffering from the same condition Mozart is ... delusions of grandeur ...
Unless injured Matfield will captain Meyers Clowns in next years world cup.
Etzebeth is my man for the Bok 5 jersey. Has been for awhile now.
Not so sure about PSDT at 4. To be quite honest I'd prefer Willemse there.
