Former Fiji rugby head coach Mick Byrne has addressed rumors regarding his departure from the team, clarifying that it was not due to health issues as previously suggested by Fijian Rugby Union officials. In a recent statement, Byrne emphasized that his exit was a decision made by the union to steer the team in a new direction, despite his clear medical records and desire to continue.
In April, the Fijian Rugby Union announced the end of Byrne's tenure following a commendable 2025 season, which saw the team clinching the Pacific Nations Cup and putting up strong performances against rugby powerhouses like Australia, France, and England. However, the union’s chairman, John Sanday, later attributed Byrne’s departure to health concerns, a claim that Byrne firmly denies.
"I just want to clear the air on my situation, I didn’t resign, and I do not have any ongoing health issues,"
Byrne, who has been managing prostate cancer, confirmed that his condition has been stable for nearly a decade, including the past year, and has not impacted his coaching duties. Medical reports shared with the media echo Byrne’s statement, indicating a favourable prognosis with no concerns that would affect his professional responsibilities.
The decision to part ways was not without its challenges for Byrne, who had aspirations to lead Fiji through the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia. The settlement to terminate his contract, which was originally set to run until December 2027, was reached quietly, leaving Byrne to address misconceptions about his health and resignation.
"I was just disappointed that it was mentioned that I resigned because of ongoing health issues. That’s not the case at all. I was removed from my role so that Fiji Rugby could move in a new direction,"
Despite the unexpected end to his role, Byrne remains optimistic about Fiji’s prospects in the upcoming World Cup. He believes that the team has a solid chance to advance past the quarter-finals, a feat they achieved in 2023. With a lineup that avoids the top-tier teams early in the competition, Byrne sees a path forward for the Pacific Islanders that could lead to surprising success.
The rugby community has shown immense support for Byrne following the news, with many expressing their well wishes and solidarity. As Byrne navigates his post-coaching career, the rugby world watches on, hopeful for his continued contribution to the sport, be it on or off the field.
