The excellent try Faf scored and the Jantjies drop were enough....they both had excellent games. But up until the time a tired du Plessis fumbled under his posts the kid was giving a good account of himself. At this point Jantjies has more gravitas, but if I had to pick the Bok flyhalf 3 years out...Du Plessis is in the mix.

The Lions won this game with  fanatical focus on stripping and contesting the ball. Sometimes very much on the edge.
The Stormers missed Etzebeth....and there are too many backs who aren't contributing. Kolbe seems to have lost something, Zas makes so many mistakes, Kotze is not Super level, Schreuder is so clumsy, van Wyk had a poor day....Allende was a mixed bag, but hopefully will help add some balance to the backline.

The fact is it was very close, and Berry missed some forward passes and knock ons at crucial times. Still the Lions were the better team today. It may be different the next time they meet....the Stormers can improve, I'm not sure the Lions have much more in the tank.

Well done to the Lions in a mistake riddled game, if the game is to be used as a yardstick to measure SAFFA rugby then once again it didn't inspire. It's a given that Jantjies will be the Bok flyhalf, if so I hope Faf gets the nod as well.

Lions are one of the positives in SA rugby at the S18 level as are the wee stormers but someone had to lose this game. Here are the current standings in s18 Link
Faf has long been a favorite of mine in the SA rugby scene but there have been minor criticisms of him that contributed to him not being selected for the Boks. Part of the problem was he was too young for the RWC according to criteria used by the decision-makers. I also heard he didn't have a strong box kick.
Glad his performance means he has to be considered for the Boks, he has to make it this year even if he is not a starter.
On Jantjies, good to see a more consistent performance these days.

You blame virtually every backline player of the Stormers for the loss - but left out your precious De Jongh,  He was poor as well losing ball possession and he is not a 12 at all.  His opponent (Van Rensburg) was all over him and broke past him at will.
Fact is the Stormers lost the game because their loosies were not up to standard and their backline was malfunctioning.  The latter got scraps for long periods of time.  The situation is further illustrated by the contribution in defense.  Another example is when Du Toit at lock made more tackles (14 tackles with 1 missed tackle) than Burger at 8 (7 tackles with 3 missed tackles) there is a problem.

Hahaha....Van Rensburg 1 tackle vs 1 missed tackle.  De Jongh 9 tackles, including one try saving tackle on Van Rensburg from behind vs 2 missed tackles. Get real Tokkie.
Schalk is not on form, we will have to see if he gets back his mojo.

Still Van Rensburg did the ordinary on De Jongh since he was far better than De Jongh who was useless in both attack and defense - whether you like it or not.

Van Rensburg was better on defence....are you clueless he made one tackle and missed one. He beat 2 defenders....de Jongh beat 2 defenders...just a tub of lard.

De Jongh smashed nothing - he lost ball possession once when tackled and gave away a penalty as well.  The one kick he made was a joke handing over the ball to the Lions and put his team under extreme pressure.   He definitely is  not an inside center.
He was on for the whole game and carried the ball 7 times making 22 meters.  De Allende came on to p lay for 30 minutes and carried the ball 7 times to gain 26 meters.   Get the message - I suppose not because you are clueless when it comes to performance evaluation of players.

So having been taken apart on Van Rensburg, you decide to try Allende. But once again you are on a hiding to nothing.
Allende 7 runs, no clean breaks, no defenders beaten, zero offloads. De Jongh 7 runs 2 defenders beaten, one clean break, 2 offloads.
Allende on for 30 minutes 2 turnovers...de Jongh 2 turnovers in the whole game.
Allende was half baked. Are there any other centers you want to try? How about Mapoe...hahaha. Game, set and match.

To be perfectly fair De Jongh had a good game but don't think he's captain material though with the ref basically telling him to shut up at one point.
De Allende is still coming back from an injury and had a neat chip and chase.

apart from their performance this weekend,..... and that de Allende is coming from injury,..... there's no possible comparison btwin de Allende and de Jongh,......... de Allende is world-class and de Jongh is not,...... as simple as that,.....

de Allende is possibly the only current SA backline player who can match the NZ players,..... in terms of skills, ability to offload, to bust tackles,..... he's the only one who could have a go in an AB backline,...... the rest are very, very far from it,.....

de Jongh is a very good CC player, a decent SR player,...... but that's all

Except Allende is a liability on defence. He is poor on positioning, can put in a big hit, but has poor technique in head on tackling. No doubt he could improve those aspects, but it's two years now. And he needs to learn how to do things at pace....he is hard to put away, but low gear tractoring rarely busts modern defenses. He was a non event at the RWC apart from the Barrett try which he enabled with his poor defensive alignment.
Nobody thinks de Jongh is a top notch international centre. But in the land of the blind one eye is king. Our centers are so woeful on the basics that de Jongh continues to look good by comparison, as he did yesterday.

The biggest liability on defense for years now has been De Jongh closely followed by Fat Fransie.   When you were going for De Allende last year you even invented an incident where you gave a totally false presentation what actually happenedin the Brumbies game blaming De Allende for a failure in defense, whereas the real person to blame was De Jongh.   You then did not mention that although De Allende missed the tackle - when De Jongh did not even attempt a tackle and De Allende had to cover for him.   You did not give the consequence either namely that the failed tackle unbalanced Kuridrani to the extent that he knocked on the ball three paces further.
Your idea about players are seriously flawed since you are prejudiced against certain players and people cannot trust a word about what you write about players.

How about Kolisi at centre. I only wonder if he has the pace. His step for that try showed something. Have posed ths iquestion a few years back.Faf and jantjes were dynamic. Jantjes has had a suspect temprement but could be maturing. The Stormers backline is sub par. Allende, Van Wyk and Kolbe are good although I dont like 15s that small.Etzebeth is sorely missed. Best lock in world by some way.Lions play with tremendous intensity. No more so than Mostert. 112 kg but a real goer. They are the better coached side and their backline more imaginative. That said things are looking better under Fleck.
Du Plessis is a prospect but right now we need Robert Du Preez and Allende in the starting line- up. I would also like Seabelo Senatla starting.  Like also to see Elstadt given a  shot at 7. Burger has been okay but not the huge force of previous years. Time marches on for the great man.

Good points HasBeen. The Lions are an effort team, they are incredibly energetic....frenetic almost. But it's their focus on hunting for the ball that is so unique...on the deck or carrying the ball,  your possession is at risk.

The problem is that when teams hunt for the ball as you said, it means that the only way to counter it is to have better ball protection and recovery.   That is where the Stormers are weak - the ball protection is a function of all players with the emphasis being on the loosies who must be effective in following the ball.  In the case of the Stormers it always was a flaw - their backline players are physically not strong enough to do that and their loosies too slow to fulfill that function.
A typical example is the way Labuschagne played on Saturday - he was excellent in preventing turnovers by the Reds - whom the week before beat the Highlanders.
