So Borthwick has appointed Jones to join in 2024….Rassie says he will be missed and that he also had a hand in our attacking game…well not much of his input was seen implemented on the pitch : ) Wonder if Rassie will hire a new Assistant/ Attack Coach? My pick would be Swys but I doubt he will rejoin the Bok Camp. My opinion is that win or loose, Rassie will not vacate that Position as Director/ HC after WC…..his Transformation efforts has put him in the good books by the Gov….so it would be very clever and essential, to hire a Specialist Backline/Attack Coach…my Guess is R&N believes that they have enough Fire Power between the 2 of them and Stick.

Boks need a backline coach to bring something new to the gameplan.
Boks were more expansive last year, and certainly scored more wing tries in some time- but the error rate was still pretty high.

Ireland doesn't do anything fantastic with their backline, but their error rate is so low - there is not much risk for them to take it wide.

Manpower

Your story about backline attack is worthless  since it is based on no evidence at all.   The present Springbok team has better attacking  and defense than they had since 1998.    As to attacking  play - the Springboks scored more backline tries in test than they did in any year since 1998.   What you missed out on was the loosies played a role in many of those tries - somehing unimaginable under previous coaches.

The English could not get Erasmus as coach - so they chose one of his assistants - a person with the same knowledge of rugby analysis abilities - something totally absent from any coaches since Mallet left     If he was not a valuable member of the top coach squad the English would not have contracted him.

There is one role Jones also played in the SA squad and that was to  assess the performances of SA players playing in Europe.   Erasmus will miss that.- but very few of the backline players he had to study performances of made the grade and that will not change.

Wonder if Erasmus is not looking  at Plumtree to deal with the backline coaching?    The Sharks apparently is also hoping to get Plumtree as coach - so what sis coming?

The Bok attack was terrible last year. It showed a below average capacity to exploited space against very poor defending. In the worst year of SH rugby, of all time, the Boks still looked pitiful. Against every serious defensive effort, the Boks looked hopeless, like the 2002 Boks, but without the physicality and stopping power. The likes of Erasmus get away with a lot because there is still this persistent belief that a backs coach will fix the overall functionality of the team when in attacking phases. This is not how attack works, it's not exclusive to the backs. In order to change the way we use the ball on the ground, the entire structure must be changed. How to the backs and forwards are integrated. Ireland are a very good example of how to have a playing philosophy that works in a modern context. They are extremely well coached in their structures and the way the backs play at speed with intelligence is truly something to behold. The Boks are lightyears behind even the likes of Italy, Japan, Georgia et al in how they use the ball. We have speed, nothing else. Last season was the most scrappy, unintelligent, clueless, structureless attack I have ever seen from the Boks. All I have seen is how supposed Bok fans have the lowest of standards.

Hi Mike. When Rassie stopped coaching the boks @ the end of 2019 he ended his stint on 65,38% win record…that is 26 Matches,17 wins and 8 losses…. i can’t find the amount of tries scored under Rassie or Nienhaber ?? In relation to previous coaches Rassie is in fifth spot and Nienhaber falls in the same boat as Alistair, Harry Viljoen, Carel with 58% win Record -19 Matches, 11 Wins and 8 losses… Kitch Christie 100% , Mallet 71.05 % and just under White + Meyer 67 %, comes Rassie….Under Meyer,s tenure 143 tries was scored with 50 test matches played 34 Wins…Between R&N 45 tests were coached so far with 28 Wins, 5 test less than Meyer and I Doubt that the 2 out performed 143 tries….if they did I will take the egg : ) but in general the Boks have not gone up in Win Record since Meyer + White….Actually they are under.
