The Lions were like the Boks in the 1st test, with no plan B.
When up and under's are working well for the team making the kicks, there is no better way in test rugby to put pressure on the opposition, forcing them into mistakes in their half.
(Like in the 2nd test, in the 2nd half when the Boks were winning up and under's 70/30).
However, when the opposition is winning the ariel battle, there is no point in kicking it to them. It is just handing over possession.
The Lions dominated the 1st test in the air, but when it stopped working in the 2nd test, and even the third test- they just continued with this tactic.
Finn Russell certainly made the game better and proved that the way to beat the Bok defense is to move the ball around and keep the ball in hand. He did say Gatland had said this during the week as the game plan, but it did not appear to be the case until Russell entered the pitch,
The All Blacks are currently the team that can beat the Bok defense, but the Lions came pretty close in the third test- and if not for some basic errors could potentially have won the match in the first half.
For the Boks, they need to develop their backline attacking game from phase play. When the opposition is winning the ariel battle, there needs to be a Plan B.
There needs to be more backline moves with skip passes, fullback or blindside winger cutting the backline to get the wingers into the game.
The 8th man also needs to link more with backs in the loose.
It is also harder to defend against if the opposition is not expecting you to kick all of the time.
Backs will lie further back on kicks, which can open up some space on the advantage line for running the ball.
