There was a lot of talk in the SA Media about the fact that the flyhalf position is a problem with both Pollard and Lambie injured. For that reason I watched the weekend Super 15 as well as the racing game yesterday.
In the game against the Sunwolves Jantjies was pathetic and showed that under pressure he is poor and he will be under pressure in tests.
The eye-opener was the performance of Robert du Preez in the Stormers team and he is going to get better with time after a very good eprformance yesterday.
The other candidate who was really the outstanding player in the Racing team in a general lacklustre performance - was Goosen when he played at full back for them. He remain a quality player and showed it again yesterday.

remember the CC final?
R. du Preez cracked appart under the pressure,..... he failed everything he did with the boot
he's still young and can learn to endure it,....... or may be not

Pollard's out for the seaon while Lambie may be back in a few weeks time, at the very least he should be back by June when the Springboks play again.
Barring some new injury, Lambie will be the Bok flyhalf this year. Who backs him up on the bench could be almost anyone but I'd back Elton Jantjies to bounce back from his horror 1st round performance and wear the Bok #22 jersey . . . maybe Robert du Preez if he builds on his weekend performance.

Du Preez looked good, like Rooi i think Jantjies will bounce back. Joe Pietersen did well in Lambie's absence but he's not Bok quality and he's getting on a bit.

Whilst I agree he's overrated and won't ever be a world beater, he's a decent fly half option and is one of the better options we've got bar Pollard in the position.
Who would be your top 3 current Bok options?

I just saw that Robert Du Preez was Jean Luc's and Dan Du Preez' brother, damn there's some rugby talent in that family!
If all 3 manage to get Bok caps will it be the most in one family? Seeing as their dad is an ex bok too!

According to you Lambie is vastly overrated - but may I ask you a question about flyhalfs - what about Morne Steyna and Francois Steyn - are they not overrated by some people?

We will see this season who cracks and who does not. I do not think Du Preez ever cracked the way Barrett did this weekend. Last year WP did not use Du Preez regualrly at flyhalf - Coleman was their flyhalf and Du Preez got very few games he came in from the bench. he was ill-prepared and ill-used. I think he found his feet in the game this weekend and will get regular playing time for a change.

By the way - I saw Goosen playing for Racing in their game on Saturday and he was the outstanding player for his team. He played at full back and was constantly coming into the line and making line breaks of note. would not leabe him out of contention and play Jantjies at 22,
The problem with Jantjies is he cracks seriously under pressure and on Saturday he was not even under pressure - but cracked nonetheless, If Jantjies cracked again - like he did on Saturday and many games in the past - Ackerman will go for young Van der Walt at flyhalf. I rate the latter higher than Jantjies and have done so for a while now.

Deddy I'm not sure who the best three options are.....certainly Pollard. Perhaps one of the youngsters will emerge. But what I am sure of is Lambie and Jantjies are not the answer. Jantjies as Mike suggests is fragile under pressure. Lambie has no flyhalf model, he gets more confused the longer he is at 10.
Look at his starting matches over the last two seasons...England 2014 a decent win, but no thanks to Lambie who made crucial mistakes.....Italy 2014 a nail biting affair until Pollard came on......Wales a poor loss....Argentina a rebound win as the Bargies basked in the glow of their first win....Japan a disaster in which Lambie played a leading role. There isn't one convincing performance there.
Why do we have to continue learning the same lessons. This small chap is a decent defensive fullback....he is not a test flyhalf.
29 Feb 2016, 08:13#12
You know we're deep in the dwang when we start looking toward Jantjies as our top 10.
Lambie has never been given a fair shake at test level. Not sure how he's supposedly over rated as most view him in the same light as Mozart & Deddy.
Ignorance is bliss the say ...
Du Preez impressed but that was against the hapless Bulls. We'll see how he goes against better opposition.
Goosen has never impressed me at 10. I hear he's doing well at 15 ... perhaps he should stay there.

I have been saying that for ages but every time a certain someone crapped in his best Sunday School dress. Until February 29, 2016, 04:42:51......... that was. If anything Goosen should come back into the Bok fold as a 15. That would be his forte. Not 10.

@mike,
what does Barret have to do with this discussion?
I was just recalling du Preez's disastrous first half in the CC final,..... but I didn't say that this is going to be his performing model,..... on the contrary, I said he's still young and can learn to handle the pressure
29 Feb 2016, 15:04#16
Goosen seems to have established himself as a fullback! With Pollard out, we suddenly have a big problem. I just don't trust Jantjes under pressure. He just lacks the mental strength to be an international flyhalf. Du Preez is a maybe. Lambie is just another provincial level 10. I reckon it is going to be a wait and see game. We'll see who puts up their hand in Su per Rugby and take it from there.

Mike you dumb fuck what game were you watching.....Jantjies was damn good for the Lions......his passing was brilliant as always, creating space for his centre's who as a result looked the best SA centre pair of the weekend.
His defence was also outstanding
Stop speaking utter fucking shit
Pollard is our best 10......Lambie is a class act, as is Jantjies and Goosen......du Preez looks the real deal as well
Jantjies was our best 10 last year in the s15.....he was outstanding
With Pollard out, Jantjies would be my Bok 10

Jantjies was the best SA 10 on display this weekend.....purely based on his ability to get his backs away.....his awareness is second to none.....look no further than that fantastic try he set up

Sorry -nobody else agrees with you. Jantjies was pathetic and that is a fact as well. Brummer was the worst followed by Jantjies, with all of Du Preez, Pretorius, Watts and Zeilinga way ahead of Jantjies.
Bias by you won't take away that fact.

That friggin wannabe tennisball thinks he's Carlos Spencer. He's not. His flippy flippy passes put us on the back foot. I was praying for his early replacement.
We should have run amok ... we didn't ... we were poor against the Japanese and he was the reason for it ... and to top it all, the idiot couldn't even slot a shot at the posts 10m out.
The Japs read him like a book. The only unpredictable thing about him is his next friggin hairdo!!
Simply useless.

Jantjies was the best SA 10 in last years s15 and thats a fact......something Mallet has gone on record saying
We are blessed with class acts at 10.....Pollard, Lambie, Jantjies and Goosen are all test standard
du Preez looks well set to be added to that list
I'd be more than happy with any of the 5 above playing for the Boks........at 10 though.....although du Preez and Pollard would be at home at 12 as well.
None of this bullshit of playing Lambie and Goosen at 15

Not necessary - Jantjies choked repeatedly in 2012 and in 2013 continuously and he choked again on Saturday as well. He has a long way to go to prove he is not a choker - since he choked even when not under pressure.
