France Rugby Coaching Overhaul: Saffa Coach Out

In a bold move that’s set to shake the foundations of French rugby, head coach Fabien Galthié is reportedly gearing up for a major reshuffle of his coaching staff. Among those speculated to be on the chopping block is South African kicking maestro Vlok Cilliers, alongside defensive stalwart Shaun Edwards, as Galthié looks to inject fresh blood into the team’s strategy ahead of the 2027 World Cup.

This overhaul comes despite Les Bleus clinching the 2026 Six Nations title, signaling that resting on laurels isn't part of Galthié’s playbook. Notably, Shaun Edwards, a revered figure in rugby defense, was conspicuously missing from recent strategic gatherings in Narbonne and Montpellier, sparking rumors about his imminent exit. L’Equipe has highlighted that Edwards’ future with the French squad is now "a real issue," even though his contract runs until 2028. In the interim, Gérald Bastide is tipped to handle the defense in the upcoming July internationals while a more permanent replacement is sought.

"The dynamic of any successful team requires evolution, and sometimes tough decisions are necessary for greater achievements,"

Galthié reportedly mentioned in a recent interview, underlining the rationale behind the anticipated changes.

The departure of Cilliers, who has been pivotal in enhancing France’s kicking game, is particularly surprising. The ex-Springbok, known for his tactical acumen, is rumored to be replaced by Toulon’s kicking coach, Maxime Petitjean, for the July series. This decision has raised eyebrows given the effectiveness of France's kicking strategy under Cilliers’ guidance over the past seasons.

Meanwhile, the search for Edwards’ successor seems to be leaning towards former France centre, Geoffrey Doumayrou, although snagging him from Montpellier might prove challenging due to his current commitments.

The shake-up in Les Bleus' coaching staff clearly underscores a strategic pivot as they gear up to face heavyweight teams like the All Blacks, Wallabies, and Japan in the inaugural rounds of the Nations Championship. With such high-stake matches on the horizon, Galthié’s gamble on reshuffling his backroom staff could indeed redefine France’s rugby fortunes or put his own legacy on the line.
